Dollar Store Dramatic Voiceover Guy: Tornado Desencadenado. It means “Tornado Unchained”.
*As the narrator speaks there is an establishing shot of Tornado himself. He’s tall by conventional standards and broadly built, with a barrel chest and long, simian-like arms. His hair and complexion are swarthy in hue, and right now his dark eyes are focused not on the viewer, but something out of their field of vision. Given the young man is dressed in his singlet and standing in the middle of a wrestling ring, it isn’t hard to guess what has his attention. Soon, those who correctly guessed ‘an opponent’ would be rewarded, as the camera pulls back to show another man charging towards him. The speed of the video is in slow motion, stretching out the time and effort it takes for Tornado to hoist is approaching adversary up, twist him around, and then send him crashing down onto his now bent knee. At the moment of impact the film resumes normal speed to make it clear how forceful the blow really was. We hear sound as well, the cacophony of hundreds of cheering fans.*
Dollar Store Dramatic Voiceover Guy: For nearly a decade he has trained to wrestle. He has honed his body and mind to become just what his name identifies him as: a force of nature inside the squared circle.
*The din from the crowd is muted to allow the Tornado’s pitchman to be heard. Meanwhile onscreen we see TD deadlift his supine foe and whip him away. The shot follows his trajectory; catching him hitting the ring ropes while also showing the setting of the scene: a gymnasium with several rows of packed bleachers. TD’s target stumbles away from them and back to where he began. Only this time Tornado herks the other wrestler up onto his shoulders in a supine position. He stands for a moment, soaking in the encouragement of the crowd, as they know what’s to happen next. Tornado spins. Smoothly and rapidly, despite the burden he bears, he spins round and round until heaving his cargo high into the air and falling backward. Once he hits the ground he raises his knees, forcing the defenseless opponent to smash into them.*
Dollar Store Dramatic Voiceover Guy: Perfecting a unique style of combat that takes advantage of the massive amounts of centrifugal and centripetal energy he can generate, Tornado Desencadenado is one of the most promising talents in the sport of professional wrestling.
*Barely a moment passes between TD’s opponent bouncing high off his shins and flopping onto the mat and Tornado himself moving in to make the cover. There’s a loud chant of ‘One! Two! Three!’ as the fans join in on the referee’s count and then the bell is rung. The camera moves in to get a close up of Tornado as he leaps to his feet and celebrates winning the match.*
Dollar Store Dramatic Voiceover Guy: He, the Fundamental Elemental, the Ring Revolutionary, the Spin Doctor, TORNADO DESENCADENADO, is currently accepting independent bookings. His rates are highly reasonable. If you’re interested in hiring this stellar competitor for your promotion, please contact him through his email or Twitter account-
*Freeze Frame. There’s a transition, and we see the Tornado ‘hype reel’ has been broadcasting on a large flat screen monitor. The monitor is part of a basic talk show set with two director’s chairs facing each other at a slight angle. In one seat is the aforementioned Tornado Desencadenado. He’s dressed like a high school student attending a job fair: white dress shirt, navy slacks, and a red tie. His long dark hair is pulled back into a tidy man bun. Opposite him is West Coast Genesis’s backstage interviewer Mia Bala. She addresses the camera.*
Mia Bala: What we just watched was sent to West Coast Genesis by my guest, Tornado Desencadenado. It was part of a larger video file he put together to serve as an application to join our developmental roster. As you can see, it worked. Tornado, welcome to WCG.
*The wrestler smiles self-consciously. He rubs the back of his neck.*
Tornado: Thanks. It’s great to be here.
Mia Bala: You look a little nervous.
*The statement surprises TD. He glances over to the young woman, and then shrugs.*
Tornado: Not really. More, uh, embarrassed, I guess. Seeing than intro segment I put together…. the quality of it, well it’s not exactly a polished production.
Mia Bala: Do you think it’s wrong about you?
Tornado: No. This isn’t false modesty; I know I’m capable in the ring. I know I can compete with the best in the world when given the chance.
*The reporter gives a pleased smile before moving on to her next question.*
Mia Bala: What made you decide to become a professional wrestler?
*Feeling a bit more comfortable treading over the familiar terrain of his background, Tornado relaxed. He leaned back in his chair and folded his hands in his lap, elbows akimbo.*
Tornado: My grandfather was a boxer. He was good enough to make a career of it. I wanted to do the same thing, but the combat sport that drew me in was wrestling, so I chose that.
Mia Bala: Your grandfather is Edmundo Mazara, correct? “El Tornado de Tampico”, famous for his ‘whirlwind wind up punch’?
Tornado: And for being a three time middleweight champion.
Mia Bala: But despite that pugilistic pedigree, you chose wrestling. How come?
Tornado: I like the variety. You can do more in wrestling. The moves, the matches; wrestling allows you to do more crazy stuff. But in the end, like boxing, it’s all about one person pitting their will and skill against another.
*Mia’s dark eyes flash down to the tablet she’s holding to read the next question.*
Mia Bala: You will have your first televised match in West Coast Genesis this Saturday, but it won’t be your debut to the sport. You were formerly a part of the Alpha Wrestling Empire, and still compete part time with the Union Battleground promotion. Why then choose to be part of WCG, which is a developmental system?
*The young man fidgets slightly in his seat.*
Tornado: Well, at first, I signed on to WCG for the paycheck and the practice. This was before Alpha Wrestling closed. Now, my goal has changed. I’m here to try and make it to the Redemption roster; just like a lot of the others here hope to do.
*Bala nods, before hitting TD with her follow up.*
Mia Bala: Redemption Wrestling is a dream for many, as you said. And I’m sure you’re aware it takes a great deal to join. You need talent. You need luck. You need connections.
*Tornado might not have been the sharpest tool in the shed, but even he knew where this line of questioning was going. He waits with some consternation for Mia to get to the point.*
Mia Bala: I mention this because over at Union Battleground you have formed a tag team with a Redemption Wrestling performer, the former Genesis Champion Trixie. Is it your hope that this pairing could help you find a way into the Redemption locker room?
Tornado: Not really. I don’t believe what happens over at Union Battleground is going to affect my standing here. The way I’ll prove myself worthy to be part of Redemption Wrestling is by winning my matches in West Coast Genesis.
*Surprisingly, the answer seems to satisfy Mia.*
Mia Bala: And your first chance to do that comes at the second episode of “Hype!”. You’ll be competing in a triple threat against a fellow newcomer Scotty Latimer and the veteran KEG. How do you like your chances?
Tornado: Well, it’s hard to figure the odds in multi-man matches. They’re no-DQ, which means rules don’t apply. You have to be ready for anything. Staying focused and being able to adapt to the situation are key in winning these scrums. KEG, like you said, has the advantage in that regard. He’s got the edge in experience over both me and Latimer. Plus his hardcore wrestling style is perfect for a triple threat. He is going to be a tough out Saturday.
Mia Bala: And what about your other opponent? Scotty Latimer has been on social media all week predicting victory for himself.
*Tornado grins at the mention of the Tweets of #TheFutureElite.*
Tornado: Yeah, I saw. I wasn’t really shocked by it, or offended. It’s all part of the business. Some people choose to psyche themselves up by tearing others down. They try to claim the road ahead is going to be easy. And that’s fine; more than fine, since Latimer’s online bragging probably helped drum up some interest in our fight. The goal of wrestling is to get noticed. Before, during, and after the match, you do what you can to sell yourself. For Latimer, the problem only comes if he believes his own hype; if he thinks KEG and I are a couple of no-talent tomato cans for him to crush. Because if he shows up in Irvine Saturday night expecting his job to be easy he’s going to be embarrassed; even as good as he is. None of us should think winning is a guarantee. The truth is this is going to be an interesting, competitive match, given our different areas of strength. Scotty fights in a hybrid style strong on striking with some Lucha as well. KEG’s a brawler with loads of experience. I’m the technical wrestler who wants to ragdoll the opposition. This triple threat is going to be a study in contrasts, and which one of us is best at what we do will wind up the winner.
*Mia gets word through her earpiece to wrap up the interview.*
Mia Bala: Any final thoughts on your upcoming debut in West Coast Genesis?
Tornado Desencadenado: I hope the fans are looking forward to it as much as I am. Hype! Two has an amazing card from top to bottom, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.
*The segment ends with a title card giving the date and location for the Hype! Episode Two and how to get tickets for the show.*
