The gym was quiet early in the morning and that was why Ruby choose this particular time to get her workout in. All her life she had been referred to as a social butterfly, and she loved being social. She loved having friends. She loved laughing and even gossiping with her friends. Since moving to California, however, her life had taken so many twists and turns that she hadn't even realized how dizzy she was getting from all of it.
She had met many people over the course of the last few months. Now that she had some time to sit and think about it, it disappointed her how many were still a part of her life. In such a short span, she felt like she lost so many people.
Jeremy Warren was the first person to really reach out to her when she signed with West Coast Genesis and made the move to a new city without knowing a soul. He was kind to her and she could admit there was a bit of a flirtatious nature between them. She hadn't heard from him in over a month.
Mason Howlett was another friend she made in LA. He was her gym partner and she was doing her best to bring him out of his shell. He had some introverted tendencies that she wanted to help him with so he could become a better performer. That one she probably screwed up by getting involved with her boyfriend. Still, she hadn't heard from him in a long time. She always thought about sending him a message, but every day seemed like she waited too long.
Rachel Ferguson. Ruby really only knew her as Salem. They were Twitter friends. Ruby was okay with having Twitter friends. It kept her busy and in contact with people she might not ever meet otherwise. The girl was so nice and supportive of Ruby. But she had her problems and Ruby didn't know her enough to know how to help her. Even now, she didn't know if she was okay.
CJ O'Donnell. He was Ruby's first serious boyfriend since moving to Los Angeles. She allowed herself to get so wrapped up in him that she knew she was to blame for so many of her friendships dissolving. She moved across the country to be with him. She joined the same company as him. But the relationship that started hot and heavy burned out quickly. Who would have thought? Now, she didn't know where things stood with him. Last time they spoke, he was so cruel and cold to her. It made her shudder just to think about it.
And Cynthia Machado. Probably her best friend she made since moving to LA. Cynthia gravitated to her like they belonged together. At first, Ruby was overwhelmed by the woman's exuberant nature, but came to love it. She was full of life and she made Ruby excited about literally everything. They were to team together in Ruby's second match for West Coast Genesis. It was going to be an early highlight of Ruby's new career.
Yet she hadn't heard from Cynthia in weeks. Cynthia's girlfriend and Ruby's other good friend, Melissa Reaver, also hadn't heard from Cynthia in weeks. It filled Ruby with a sense of overwhelming dread as she approached her match on May 6th. Would she survive an outing with the Seventh Circle?
How could she survive an outing with the Seventh Circle?
On-Camera
Ruby sits alone at an outdoor cafe not far from her apartment. Her blonde locks drift slightly in the light breeze that also rumbles the flaps of the umbrella casting a shadow over her table. She stares ahead at nothing in particular, absent-mindedly bringing the straw of her sugary coffee drink to her lips for a sip.
"I'm at a loss."
She speaks aloud to the camera that she knows is watching. It was her duty to give West Coast Genesis an on-camera piece as part of her contract. Something they can use to hype the match they took the time to book her in.
"I thought I would have so much to say for this show. So much to show you guys. But I'm at a loss."
Shrugging her shoulders, she places the drink back on the table and wipes the condensation off her fingers with a napkin.
"I expected to at least be sitting here with Cynthia talking about something even as silly as karaoke night with Mel. The hope was to be strategizing how the two of us are going to stand up to two men the size of Seventh Circle. Forget their size. Their aggression is intimidating enough."
Ruby takes a deep breath, letting it out slowly as she wears the concern the concern on her face over what Seventh Circle is capable of.
"Karston is…"
For a moment, her concern subsides and there's a slight smile that brightens up her face. It's short-lived as she gets herself serious again. This is serious business, after all.
"Karston is all business in the ring. What friendship we may or may not have won't matter in the ring. He's made that clear. Gunnar…"
There's no smile to disrupt her moment this time. In fact, the mention of Karston's tag partner only serves to intensify the concern on her features.
"They're a well-oiled machine with Aaynet at the helm. And she hates me."
Yikes. Ruby's eyes widen at the reminder of how the manager of Seventh Circle might be the worst part of this impending match-up.
"They're a team. They're focused. They're dangerous. And I'm… I'm alone."
She looks around. She is the only one sitting on the patio of the cafe. Not only is her table just her, but the entire area is abandoned to prove her point.
"Winning would be a miracle. Surviving will be even harder."
Ruby takes a deep breath, closing her eyes as she holds it for a moment and then slowly lets it out as we fade.
