OFF CAMERA
Matt Shields lied flat on his back as he stared straight up while slowly being moved in to the small MRI machine for another scan of his brain, this one requested by his girlfriend Kayla Richards.
“Are you good Mister Shields?”
“Quite fine, physician Darryl.”
The nurse running the machine looked over to Kayla after that. Kayla shook her head and turned so Matt couldn’t hear her, talking in a low almost whisper voice.
“It’s getting worse. I was told it would be a short term thing, I was happy to play into it so not to shock his system but I just can’t do it anymore.”
“The scan will tell us more. Sometimes they say short term when they mean six months.”
Darryl kind of shrugs as he turns back to look over the information. Kayla shakes her head pacing nervously back and forth, her hands tangling in her long black hair as the machine clicks and turns. He looks at Matt as he goes to move.
“No baby lay still, the….magic….machine needs to take pictures…”
“I do not like this infernal contraption, but I will do as you wish Mine Queen.”
Matt lays back and the machine starts up once more. It runs for several minutes with Darryl looking over everything, making a few notes, and making sure he gets a full scan. He turns back to Kayla with no expression at all.
“You said pre frontal cortex, right?”
Kayla stumbled over her words before pulling the file from her bag, she rolled her eyes down over it trying to find the wording.
“That’s what the doctor who diagnosed it said yeah...why?...what’s wrong?.....
She seemed to panic her hands shaking as she stepped forward looking over information that made no sense to her. Darryl looked over the file real quick, then back to the scans.
“Well there’s nothing wrooooong, but I don’t have good news either.”
He grabbed a pen and turn towards the computer. He pointed towards the left side of the front of Matt’s brain.
“So that’s the area of the brain that was damaged during his uh… accident. Well I shouldn’t say damaged, affected. It should have lit up blue during the scan, but as you can see it’s yellow. That means basically it’s still working to heal itself. If it was orange, there would be cause for some concern, and it actually was in the original scan.”
Darryl shows her the image from the original and the new scan.
“Long story short, it’s his memory that’s actually fucked up. This whole King thing, is more like filling in the gaps than anything. Has he shown any flashes of his normal self? Anything you can think of would be a huge help.”
Kayla bit her bottom lip and fumbled her hands together.
“Um, when we’re...intimate….the king stuff gets pushed back, he seems more normal. But aside from that he seems to have it around him all the time, at work, home, we go out to eat and he yells “servant girl”....he has flashes but….it’s when we’re having sex…”
She blushes and sweeps her hair from her face. Darryl nods and looks back at the scans.
“Well that is something at least. I can imagine that it’s rough to almost feel like you’re living with another person, but the good news is that he’s improving. I’m not going to say that he will definitely get better, but this scan is actually encouraging. Now it could take a long time for him to fully heal from this, if it ever happens, but he could also wake up tomorrow and be back to his old self. Looking at his old scans, and these new ones, my conservative estimate, is anywhere from one to six months. I know that isn’t what you want to hear, but it’s all I’ve got."
“Can you please extract me from this infernal tube.”
“I hope you like Game of Thrones.”
Darryl hits a button and the tray comes sliding out. Matt quickly stands up, fixes his hair and walks in to the room where Kayla and Darryl are. He grabs Kayla and pulls her in to a kiss before he turns to Darryl.
“Physician Darryl, what is your prognosis?”
“Uhm, everything looks good man. I was just telling your girlfriend.”
“Mine Queen.”
“Right… uh, I was just giving her all the important information.”
Kayla forces and smile and nods sliding her hand to his cheek and her other hand rests on his shoulder.
“He said everything is fine, just taking time, physically you’re healthy….”
She nods as if trying to convince herself looking over at Daryl with a sigh. Darryl nods his head as he looks at both of them.
“I would say another scan in let’s say a month. Other than that though, you are good to go Mister Shields.”
Matt looks at him as he waits.
“You are aware that you bow when a king enters and leaves, correct physician Darryl. I hold you in high esteem, but all must show respect to the King of The Heavyweights.”
Kayla sighs and looks over at him with a nod and her eyes wide, Daryl looks confused but offers a small bow.
“You see my king, he bends the knee and the back as a mark of respect for Matthew the first, the great king”
Kayla smiles and then turns mouthing “this is what I live with”.
“Indeed he does. Have a most wonderous day Physician Darryl.”
Matt takes Kayla’s arm as they head out of the office.
“The fuuuuuck?”
Darryl shakes his head and sits down, looking back at the scans for a bit.
