*Avery Miles III is sitting alone in a row of empty seats. The airport seems to be quiet as Avery prefers to fly during the off peak hours. He is sitting with a carry on and a personal bag; for the constant flights, Avery has learned how to best pack and keep the needed things to a minimum. Flying from Yokohama to Nagoya was about an hour flight, and an easy one at that. With the Japan Tour for Redemption Wrestling nearing its end, Avery is looking to happily get back into the states to be close to his family and friends. Between the Japan dates, and the monthly Guerreros of Lucha shows, Avery is ready to not see an airplane for as long as he can help it.
Flying later at night allows for not only a cheaper flight, but the ability to typically have no one in the seat next to you. Avery slouches in a padded seat just in front of a window. The lights of the runways glow in the night, as flights take off and land. The airport is a unique one, being built upon an artificial island. This Japan Tour has allowed the expansion of horizons to not only Avery, but to all of the wrestlers and staff on tour. A story of night and day, things in GOL were looking greater than ever whereas things in Redemption were a mixed bag.*
Two shows, in such a little time. Redemption’s last Glory before Ultimate Resolve. And Guerreros of Lucha’s Ninth Chapter, “Because I Got High”. Being a part of Lucha since the second chapter, I’ve put in my rear view many accomplishments. I could sit here and repeat them over and over, but this is about the here and the now. I have defeated everyone in my way, and suffered only one loss.
Tiger Mask Red
Aidan Carlisle
Mr. Rottentreats
La Cucaracha
Amy-Jo Smyth
Nirvana
El Gran Jefe Rosario
And my only loss is to Sam Washington in a No Holds Barred match. He declared himself to be the next champion, and yet he was not. He had to put me through a table to defeat me. And I have to not only face Helena Noir, but Rosario again in this match.
Not only did Rosario have to hit some low blows on me to try and steal himself a win, but Noir has to involve herself as well to Superkick the Rosario’s teeth down his throat. It seems like this time around I am being forced to take on not one, but two opponents. I am not sure if this is their way to take the championship off of me. But I have been a fighting champion since day one of winning this title.
I beat La Cucaracha in October to win the title. Defended against Amy-Jo Smyth, Nirvana, and Rosario. This is my fourth title defense now.
La Cucaracha won the title at Eternal Lucha in July. Was supposed to defend against Senior Awesomeo at Taco Tuesday, but they both suffered through injuries. She would learn who her next opponent would be, and it was me! And in her first official defense, lost it to me. A champion that never got to defend her title, I’ve done what I could to elevate the title and the company.
The second month into 2017, and I am still your reigning Rey de Reyes Champion.

FLASHBACK
*Hours later after the pull off, Avery wakes up. The sun is nearly rising and he has early morning ring setup to get to. Breakfast is a treat for those that have the time. Scrambling through the white plastic bag next to him, he finds a warm Mountain Dew and a stale bag of sour cream and onion chips. He shrugs and takes a handful, takes a swig, and heads out on the way. He has ninety minutes to make a two hour drive but it will be so worth it for Avery. He would get a chance to work with a local veteran, a man that runs a local wrestling school. This early in his career, each and every match brings him that much closer to doing it on a bigger scale. Oh his way to Campo, wrestling big time on television was only a pipe dream. A lofty goal for the man that would cut his teeth across North America, New Zealand, and Japan.
Speeding down the road, his phone would ring. The car was more death trap, and less car. But it got the job done for the time being. Back in Indio, his wife, Zoe, was working two part time jobs to help make ends meet. She was not a fan of his chosen career, and did not mind making it known.*
Avery: Hello?
Zoe: Hey Avery. How’s it going?
*The sound of wind blowing creates a deafening sound for Zoe*
Zoe: Are you still driving?
Avery: Yeah.
Zoe: Can you roll the window up?
Avery: Sure. Sure.
*Avery rolls the window up*
Avery: There.
Zoe: Aren’t you supposed to be there, hours ago?
Avery: Yeah. I got tired. Pulled off into a rest stop. Decided to grab a little shut eye.
Zoe: Ave- we need this. Even as little as it makes-
Avery: I know, I will be there on time. I promise.
*An audible sigh from Zoe can be heard, as Avery tries to ignore it*
Avery: I get to wrestle this dude. They call him the Cali Butcher!
Zoe: Sounds cool.
*She feigns interest*
Avery: Well I am getting near there… Oh Shit!
*Avery looks down at realizes he is speeding, and just passes a Highway Patrol car*
Avery: I think I was just caught in a speed trap. I gotta go. Love you babe.
*He hangs up as Zoe says to herself*
Zoe: You too.

The aptly named “Because I Got High” may mean one thing to some, but it is a phrase that plays so fondly to me. Flying through the air, I find myself at peace. Climbing that corner and rising to my feet. The crowd stands, and seeing the thousands of faces. It is a rush. And that rush gives me the strength to do what I do. Flipping and twisting mid-air. I take pride in what I can accomplish. A high flying style is one that takes a toll on your body, but I would rather burn hot and shine brightly, burning out like a Phoenix… then playing it safe and treading water my entire career. The life of a professional wrestler is a hard one, and I can speak to that claim better than many.
I’ve studied my opponents. I’ve studied this company. I am a champion that leads by example. I’ve fought people that I’ve never met inside of the ring. And some I have not ever even heard of. And I make sure to prepare myself. Mentally. Physically. I keep my mind, body, and soul under control. It is important for me to make the right decisions, and my record goes to show just how successful I have been.
California is MY home turf. Growing up and wrestling in both SoCal and Northern Mexico. I’ve long had roots here. The fans that attend? They are MY fans. They cheer for me. They wear MY shirts. They love me being champion. Their champion.
*Avery stands up. The lights of the city reflect off of the water surrounding the island. He grabs his bag in one hand, and his carry on in the other*
El Gran Jefe Rosario. The Big Boss. A man that could not pin me. A man that could not defeat the champion. This weekend will be more of the same. He will come up short, and I will be holding up the Rey de Reyes Title at the end of it. This time, we both know that Helena Noir is inside of the ring from the beginning. I know that coming into this match, I can lose the title without being pinned. I need to be all eyes out there. In a flash, it could be all gone. I do not mind this type of match as it is a challenge. I would rather go down as a fighting champion then to have it ripped out of my hands.
It is going to take a hell of a lot for you to try and beat me… especially with Noir in this match as well. You were beaten last month… and you will again be beaten. It is alright though, one day you might be championship quality.
*Avery remains emotionless as he looks out as he sees people lining up for the train to take them into the city. He begins to walk slowly as the camera keeps up with him*
Helena Noir. You and I do not know each other. You decided to throw yourself into my title defense. I would have beat him even if you had not interfered. I can respect making your intentions known, but I am far from giving up my title. From the day I stepped into this company, I have taken it upon myself to lead the charge. To work my way up. And earn what is given to me. I took my opportunity from La Cucaracha when there was no other person to step up to the plate. I did not attack her during a match. I made a statement. Clear as day. And I have backed it up, period.
The first ever GOL Hall of Famer, Tiger Mask Red. Do you know who he said should be the next Hall of Famer for GOL? Yours truly. I am clearly the most successful talent in this company.
I’ve beaten the previous champion. I’ve beaten the Hall of Famer. I’ve took the title when the one man claimed it was rightfully his. And I’ve beaten a legend along the way to get to the point. Do the both of you really think that you have what it takes to beat me? Even, if for a second, you both could even work together to try and beat me… Neither of you are up for the task.
And just like I have been doing every show since winning the Rey de Reyes Title… I will show up… put on one hell of a show...and leave The Labyrinth with the title still draped over my shoulder.
Whether I am bloody and broken. Clean and rested. Or anywhere in-between.
This is not your title to win.
Nor is it my title to lose.
It is my title.
And that is the beginning. The middle. And the end.
