Alechs stands outside of the SoCal Grappling Academy with keys in hand for the school. Avery Miles III was nice enough to give Alechs some after hours time with the school since they had begun to get to know each other on a personal level; plus the school had plenty of security cameras too. He was supposed to meet Lola there at 9:00pm sharp, but Alechs arrived there by 8:40pm. Gym bag in hand, he was ready.
The time begins ticking down closer to 9:00 pm and at 8:57 a lime green Lamborghini pulls up towards the front of the Grappling Academy. The expensive car pulls into the small lot and parks. Alechs is taken aback by the car as the driver door lifts up and out steps pop sensation, Lola Canteras. The singer is dressed much more appropriately for athletic training this time around, with workout shorts, a lime green workout top and black and green sneakers.
Lola: Alechs! Look, I’m early!!!
He looks at his watch.
Alechs: Lesson one for tonight… early is ten minutes or more. I was early. You are on time.
The familiar hard nose attitude returns from Alechs. Lola nods, understanding the importance of a tight schedule.
Lola: I get it, trust me, I’m always on a tight schedule and I don’t plan on wasting your time.
Canteras walks past Alechs, toward the door and pulls on the handle and it doesn’t budge.
Lola: Umm, are we locked out?
He jingles the keys.
Alechs: Just wanted to make sure you showed first.
He heads towards the door, sticking the key in and heading to the security box. Entering the passcode, he flips the lights on and the school is at their fingertips.
Alechs: Hope you are ready to get sweaty.
He jokes, tossing his gym bag to the floor. He wears a tank top, a pair of loose bottomed pants, and black shoes. His ankle is wrapped with white tape.
Alechs: Let’s head inside of the ring and stretch it out.
Lola walks over to the ring and hops onto the apron. She looks around, and the mood is much different from her first visit. Gone is the background chatter, the slams of bodies hitting the mat, and the shouting from trainers to trainees and replacing it is the gentle sound of a single, large overhead fan blowing.
Canteras steps under the middle rope and enters the ring.
Lola: Are you sure you should be working on that ankle? I know you’re dying to work out with a real life pop princess, but hey, we have time…
She teases, hoping he doesn’t take it to heart.
Alechs: I could work this ring better one legged than you would right now, Miss Lola.
She is not sure if he is serious or joking; his personality tends to ride that line. He grabs the top rope, pulling and stretching his upper body and torso.
Alechs: Make sure to loosen up, I don’t want you getting a boo boo.
He smirks, this time revealing he is teasing some.
Lola: But a boo boo would mean bed rest, right? Meaning I can actually get more than three hours of sleep at night?
Her laugh echoes throughout the otherwise quiet gym as she leans over and begins stretching.
Lola: Have you ever had one of these late night special training sessions, or is this a one time thing since I bought you that phone?
Alechs looks at her, picking up quickly that she intends on matching wits with his smart assery. Is that even a word, he wonders? Sure. Why not.
Alechs: After a session with me, you will sleep like a baby.
He realizes what that sounds like.
Alechs: A training sesh, I mean.
Alechs was not one to ever talk to ladies much, and let alone a famous world known pop star. To be honest, after learning who she was he went home and got on his desktop computer and listening to some of her stuff on YouTube. Not caring much for the genre, he enjoyed the videos getting a chance to see her even more.
Alechs: Are you going to get loose or not?
Lola: What does it look like I’m doing?
She moves closer to the top rope and grabs it with one hand and lifts her leg behind her, pulling on her foot and stretching out.
Lola: I’m starting to wonder if you’re grumpier at night or in the morning? Which is the worst time to catch you?
Before he can answer, she laughs.
Lola: And you’re wording is adorable. I was cracking up at the text earlier, you got soooo nervous when you mentioned it being a date, and then backtracked, and then covered it again! I was dying!
Turning red, he cannot believe she is trying to put him on the defensive.
Alechs: I am here with a job to do, to help you train. I don’t want to get things twisted. I don’t want you to fall for me, like all of the ladies do. I can’t be held down, and I am going places!
He tries to assure himself all of these are true as he says them, as… none of them are true. Except for that he was going places. His heart and mind set on success, and there was not substitute.
Alechs: Okay, once you are loose. Run the ropes. You do know what that means, right?
Lola: You had me run them last time, remember? Plus I’m a fan, I get the terminology.
She shakes her head and decides she’s had enough stretching. She looks over at Alechs who is continuing to stretch and she takes off for the ropes. Again, the familiar burn of the last time she ran them returns, but she’s determined to show Alechs that she’s serious. She picks up speed and keeps running, bouncing off of them with more aggression each time. After running for nearly two minutes, she stops and goes to a knee in the middle of the ring. Her heart rate is up, and her breathing is heavier.
Lola: That….is….crazy. How do you do it?
She runs a hand along her forehead, wiping some sweat beads.
He smiles at her, showing his wrapped ankle, making sure to point it out. He begins running the ropes and times it to boot. Back and forth. Back and forth. He passes her time, and finishes with a springboard backflip with a “ta da” at the end.
Lola: You just had to show me up like that, didn’t you? Let’s see you get on stage and sing, dance and keep the fans feeling like a part of the show Mr.I’m better than Lola!
The playfulness between them is something she already enjoys, and she knows she’s going to have to work to keep up with him. He’s a beast, she thinks to herself, even on one bad ankle.
She closes the gap between them and looks down at his ankle.
Lola: So, what can we do tonight on that ankle of yours? Here I finally came prepared, with actual sneakers and now you’re the one with issues moving around. We just can’t get it right, can we?
Alechs: Don’t you worry about me Pop Superstar Lola!
He jokes.
Alechs: How about I just call you ‘La’.
He smiles at her, hoping that she is cool with it.
Alechs: So have you ever taken a bump before?
He takes one right in the middle of the rope, the thump to the mat echoing throughout the empty gym. He smiles as he looks up at her.
Lola: I’ve never taken one, and that looked like it hurt, but you know what I say?
Alechs sits up, still on the mat.
Lola: Bring on the pain!
She walks to the middle of the ring, looking down at it. She fights off the doubts in her mind, glancing down at Alechs for guidance.
Lola: Okay, what do I do from here?
Alechs: Hold your arms out to your sides, palms down. And fall back. Land on the flat of your back. NOT on your tailbone or ass.
He sorta checks her out from this angle, not trying to get caught. She’s too busy focusing on her positioning to notice. Finally, she’s in position. She falls back…
...it’s the ugliest bump Alechs has ever seen anyone take. She fell, but landed butt first and then slide her back slowly to the mat. She looked up as she was flat on the mat.
Lola: How was that? I feel like I could have done better.
He tries not to laugh.
Alechs: I believe I said NOT to land on your ass. And I am pretty sure…
He kips up, offering a hand to her to help her up.
Alechs: Try again?
She takes his hand as he pulls her to her feet.
Lola: I’m not giving up. I know I can do this.
The joking nature between the two slowly fades as it’s evident that she takes it seriously. She puts herself back in position and goes for a second attempt at the bump. Unfortunately for the singer, the result is the same. The bump is about as ugly as the first, and she senses it. She smacks the mat with the palms of hands and sits up.
Lola: That was just as bad, wasn’t it?
Alechs: You will get it. Practice. As long as you are ready to practice it and not give up.
Words of encouragement, he wants to make sure that she doesn’t give up at all.
Alechs: Watch me. Okay?
He bumps, nearly perfect.
Alechs: See?
Lola: You make it look so easy...but if you can do it, so can I.
Alechs stands to his feet and watches Lola again. He can practically see her overthinking it but lets her do her thing. She finally fights her thoughts off enough to attempt another bump, this one slightly better than the previous two, but nowhere near the flawless bump of her trainer.
Lola: I feel like we should work on another move or something. I promise I’m trying, it’s just not as easy as it looks.
Alechs offers a hand but she shakes her head and pulls herself up, disappointment on her face.
Lola: I’m glad no one else is here. This is embarrassing.
Alechs: La, I promise it takes time. I’ve been doing it for a long time. But you will just have to practice. Don’t give up. Did you give up after getting stuck writing the lyrics to one of your songs? I bet you didn’t. I bet “Never Say” was not written in a night, was it?
He shows her that he did listen to some of her music. He smiles.
Alechs: Want to give locking up a go?
Lola: Wait, you really listened to my music?
The disappointment on her face from moments ago fades as she half smiles.
Lola: Thanks…I didn’t expect you to really care about that part of my life.
She clears her throat and adjust her shorts, pulling at them gently.
Lola: Let’s give locking up a chance, there’s no way I can mess that up like the bump.
She walks a circle around Alechs, looking him up and down as she does.
He steps forward, making a big thud with his foot and grabs her by the head, showing her how simple it is. He pulls her into his chest, and then shoots her off in the ropes.
Alechs: See? Simple.
She plants her feet and comes to a stop in front of him.
Lola: Yeah, that looks alot easier. Let me try.
She mimics the movements of Alechs and the lock up is alot cleaner than her bumps were. She pulls him into her chest and then throws him off into the ropes. She jumps up into the air in excitement as she watches him grab the top rope to stop his momentum.
Lola: Tell me that wasn’t nearly as good as yours!
He smiles and chuckles.
Alechs: Yes. Very good. Now, do it again but this time I am going to reverse the whip and send you into the ropes. Okay?
Lola: Why do I have to be the one to hit the ropes?
Alechs: Do you want to be trained? Cuz that’s why.
He offers a stern look to her.
Lola: Got it.
She initiates the lock up again, following the same steps as before. This time as she goes to throw him into the ropes, he counters and sends her into them. She bounces off as the ropes spring her forward towards Alechs, but Lola is able to stop just in front of him again, grabbing onto his shoulders to catch herself.
Lola: My ribs hate you right now..but how was that?
Alechs: Very good. Bravo. You are getting it. You think running the ropes hurts? Try suicide rope runs. No está bien.
For the first time, she hears him speak Spanish. He breathes in deep as he slightly winches but pays no attention to it.
Alechs: Is there anything specific you’d like to learn?
Lola: There are alot of things I’d like to learn. Things like...your favorite food? Favorite color? And you favorite La song…
She laughs and locks up with him again.
Lola: But…
Grunts as she throws him into the ropes.
Lola: I’ll settle for more moves!
He returns and quickly slides between her legs and under her, kipping back up to his feet.
Alechs: Moves like that, hmm?
He smiles.
Alechs: Okay, I got you. Whip me into the ropes, I will come back, and you go for a clothesline. You do know what that is, right?
His smartass ways return.
Lola: Just for that comment I’m going to clothesline your head off.
Proving she can match wits again, she whips him into the ropes and as he approaches her, she sticks her arm out and takes two steps forward looking for a clothesline.
He slides under it across the mat and quickly pops up to his feet, but he lands hard on his ankle and immediately drops. He groans.
The movement happened so fast that Lola didn’t even catch what happened, all she knew was Alechs was on the mat, in obvious pain. Her instincts take over and she quickly hurries over and kneels down next to him, looking at the ankle but hesitant to touch it.
Lola: Alechs, what happened? You were moving fine...can you stand up?
She wants to do more but knows her knowledge in this department is limited. She takes his hand as he leans up on one arm and squeezes it.
Lola: Don’t think about the pain...block it out, and tell me where ice is. I’ll grab something to put on your ankle.
He tries to get up, but he can’t. He stumbles back down.
Alechs: Ice is in the kitchen. Remember where I showed you?
Lola: I got it. I’ll be right back.
She slides under the bottom rope and jogs towards the kitchen. She spots it and walks in. She grabs two paper towels and some ice from the freezer and wraps the ice cubes in the towels, returning towards the ring. She slides in and sits the ice towels next to her.
Lola: Are you okay with me helping take your shoe off? I won’t touch you at all if it hurts that much. But I think taking the shoe off and getting the ice directly on the ankle will help.
He nods. She unties his shoe and pulls it off, his ankle already swelling. The ankle wraps doing more harm than helping at this point, he winces in pain but remains quiet not to let on to how bad it is. He was told earlier in the day to stay off of it but did not want La knowing about that.
She delicately unwraps his ankle, taking extra precaution.
Lola: This swelling isn’t good Alechs…
She picks the homemade ice pack up and presses it to his ankle gently. The cooling sensation on his skin is a bit of a shock after the burning pain he had felt previously.
Lola: I knew we shouldn’t have done anything tonight. You don’t have to push yourself around me, you know that right?
She pulls the ice away to examine his ankle again, but the swelling is the same as it was. She puts the ice back on the ankle.
Alechs: I am fine, I swear. I just need to let it rest some. It’s no biggie.
He smiles through the pain.
Alechs: I can hold this here. Try a couple of more bumps for me. Please, La ?
Lola: Alechs, I’m not bumping while your ankle looks like a deformed bowling ball.
She points a finger at him, almost playfully scolding him.
Lola: And stop trying to be so tough around me. I know it hurts, you don’t have to act like it doesn’t. Do you want me to help you up and into my car? You might want to get it checked out to make sure you didn’t break anything.
Alechs: It’s fine, I will be fine riding my bike back home.
He smiles, fighting through the pain.
Alechs: Let’s finish your lessons tonight. I don’t want the night to go to waste. I’d feel too bad.
Lola: We can work on me another night, I don’t want you to feel bad at all. And I definitely don’t want you riding your bike home on a bad ankle. Come on, as someone who beats someone else up for a living, you know it isn’t a great idea to push the ankle anymore, right?
She knows he’s putting on the tough act and she’s determined to get him to let his guard down for her.
Lola: Why don’t I go grab your bike and bring it inside? That way no one takes it tonight and then when you can put pressure on your ankle I’ll help you to my car? Otherwise, it looks like we’re both sleeping in this gym. You on the floor of course.
He smiles.
Alechs: Well, gee, thanks. I appreciate that.
He is sarcastic.
Alechs: I appreciate that, but I am not going to let you go out of your way for me. You are very nice and I appreciate what you’ve already done for me. I don’t want to take advantage of you at all.
He tries to get up to his feet, and manages to stumble around a bit.
Alechs: See?
Lola: I see. I see you almost fell on your face.
She shakes her head and walks over to the rope he’s leaning on for balance. She looks down as he has his foot off the mat carefully.
Lola: You’re helping me, right? With the teaching me to wrestle thing. You didn’t have to, but you are. Let me help you too. It’s the least I can do.
She grips the top rope, looking outside of the ring.
Lola: Cool with you?
She drifts her eyes back towards Alechs.
Alechs: Well we still have a few hours to work out or do whatever. Maybe we can grab a bite or something? There is a diner right down the street. My treat.
He smiles hoping that his evening with her doesn’t end this early.
Lola: Didn’t you treat at the coffee shop? When do I get a chance to treat?
Alechs: Fine. Your treat. But I am hungry! You better believe it.
He smiles.
He begins to slowly crawl out of the ring and tries to get a footing on the floor below.
Alechs: Little help maybe?
Lola slides under the bottom rope and lets him rest his arm on her shoulder as she begins walking towards the door but then stops.
Lola: Wait...your shoe is still in the ring and please tell me you have crutches somewhere here? They would really come in handy right now.
Alechs: Um, I don’t think so. I can figure it out. I will be fine.
He hobbles a bit towards the front door as he grabs his gym bag.
Alechs: You ready?
Lola: I guess so Mr.Stubborn.
She continues to help him out as they leave his shoe in the ring, something Avery might not appreciate in the morning. As they make it back out into the LA night, she helps him lock the place up and then they slowly head over to her expensive Lamborghini.
Lola: I’m thinking I should take you home and let you rest that ankle. I know your pride is at an all time high, but I’m worried.
The passenger door lifts up as she helps him sit down. She makes her way to the drivers side and enters after her door lifts. Both doors then drop closed as she starts the car.
Alechs: Well I appreciate that, but I’d like to really spend some more time getting to know you.
He smiles, hoping not to be too forward.
Alechs: And purple. Purple is my favorite color.
She smiles at the little bit of info he has decided to open up and share.
Lola: Purple is a cute color, almost as cool as lime green.
She takes off into the night.
Lola: I know you said you live at home, but I wouldn’t mind dropping you off there and maybe coming in for a few. I mean what better place to get to know you than at your own house?
Alechs: Um, I am not so sure about that. Your car might be sorta…. In a bad location?
He tries to avoid her coming over at all costs, embarrassed at his living situation.
Lola: In a bad location? Alechs, it’s just a car...I think it’ll be fine.
To Alechs, knowing how expensive the car is makes it a big deal, but to see her caring more about the company rather than her car puts things in perspective. Most would be material in her position, but she seems to be genuine.
Lola: I wanna see where you’re living anyway. Come on...pleeeease?
Alechs: Fine. But can we get something to eat on the way at least? And let me buy?
He is too proud for all of this, but knows that it will eventually happen, better to just go ahead and rip the band aid off now. Embarrassed at his home situation, and how much different he lives then she does. This is likely the thing to show the difference in the two of them, and he assumes it ruins any chances to grow a friendship with her, or more.
Lola: Sweet!
She picks up speed and looks over at him.
Lola: How about something greasy but tasty? In the mood for a burger?
Alechs: That sounds good.
Alechs sits in the car, not trying to touch anything or to get anything dirty.
Alechs: Pretty cool car. You definitely worked hard for what you have. I think that first thing I want to do when I sign a contract… buy my moms a house.
He smiles. Living in a two bedroom apartment with four people is not ideal. Alechs’ two brothers share one of the bedroom, and Alechs has a curtained off area of a living room as his room. He can only imagine what Lola is going to think of him. Being a single mom raised family, Alechs is proud of her sacrifices but also embarrassed when he compares his life to those around him. If they only knew…
Lola: That’s really admirable of you. Most people when they sign a contract, or earn a big paycheck think about what they can buy for themselves. Knowing the first thing on your mind is your mom? That’s refreshing.
She pulls into the drive thru of a local fast food place and puts her window down.
Drive Thru Employee: What can I get you tonight?
Lola: Just one second, please.
She looks over at Alechs.
Lola: It’s my treat, and I can’t go to your moms place without picking her and your brothers up something, so order whatever you guys want. You know them better than I do obviously.
She laughs as the moonlight reflects off her new friends face, giving her a different glimpse of the man she’s getting to know, slowly but surely.
Alechs: Um. A number three for me. No ketchup. And three number sevens?
He asks, hoping it is okay as he bites his inner cheek.
She turns her attention back to the drive thru speaker.
Lola: Can I please get a number three with no ketchup? Three number sevens, and a number one, no pickles.
Drive Thru: That will be $32.79 at the window.
Lola: Thanks.
They pull around to the window and the employee seems taken back by the car. He collects himself before asking for payment. She hands the worker a credit card. He swipes it and hands it back to her. She tucks the card into her purse as the food is handed to her, one bag at a time, each meal in a separate bag. She hands them all to Alechs.
Lola: Thank you!
She begins pulling away and back out into traffic.
Lola: Okay I have no idea where I’m going so you have to tell me.
She tries getting a glance of his ankle.
Lola: How’s the ankle feeling?
Alechs: I am not sure if you know where Figueroa Housing is? And it’s feeling better?
The name of the building should be known to those knowing the government housing in East LA. It is known as a place for drug dealing, car jacking, and gang warfare. A hotbed of crime and violence, he is already afraid for her sake… especially at this time at night.
Alechs: E 39th and Boyle.
Lola: I honestly have no idea where it is, but it’s no big deal.
She keeps one hand on the wheel while putting the address in her phone with her free hand.
Lola: Cool, we’re like 5 minutes away.
Alechs goes quieter as they near his home. She notices the street signs and area in general looks less flashy, more worn. She looks over and see’s the nerves all over his face.
Lola: You okay? You look like you’re about to get sick.
She laughs and then looks straight ahead of her as she takes a turn as the phone directs her.
He is indeed sick to his stomach. He knows that she is going to see a very different Alechs, then the driven and sweet guy so far. In Figueroa, you cannot show weakness. They come up on the building.
Alechs: Building 2.
There are four buildings, and they look straight out of the movie “Candyman”. He swallows telling her where to park as on the sidewalk in front of them is a group of four men around his age or maybe a few years later.
Alechs: Hold up one sec, La. Lemme holler at these dudes.
Alechs heads outside of the car as they try to crowd the front of the car. Alechs said something to them, as they rub their chins and nod. Alechs gives some sort of hand shake to them as he nods back as thanks. He heads over to the driver’s hood, still hobbling, as he opens the door for her.
Alechs: Aight. We good, La.
He smiles, trying to hide any lack of confidence. She grabs the bags of food as well as her purse, tucking them all close to her body, trying not to drop anything.
Lola: What was all of that about?
She nods towards the group of men that are walking down the sidewalk.
Lola: Everything good?
She looks back, and they are obviously checking her out but standing in front of the car.
Alechs: Nah, all good. They are keeping a watch out for your car for me. Don’t stare though, they are bangers. None to be messed with. Keep your head up, don’t look directly in anyone’s eyes. And follow my lead. Alright, ma?
A much more hardened Alechs is coming to the surface as he needs to make sure to protect her in this sort of situation. As they approach the building, a couple of more guys stand at the entrance.
Guy 1: Hey ma. How’s it going, cutie? You wanna hang?
Guy 2: Nah, she wants a real man.
Alechs: Chill fam. She’s with me.
Guy 2: Ahhh! Alechs bringing a cutie home to his mom’s.
Alechs: Estas loco.
Alechs opens the door, letting Lola in. He follows just behind her as the first floor has multiple units and the building looks like it is from the 70s.
Alechs: You sure you want to do this?
Lola: Yeah...but what was up with those guys? Are they your friends?
She seems confused about everything going on, having never been in an environment like this.
Alechs: Just a couple of loco vatos from across the way. Keep up.
They head into the elevator and he hits “27” on it.
Alechs: More bangers. They were a part of the same gang my pops got locked up for. They been trying to get at me. I ain’t havin it. But they respect me cuz of him.
Alechs allows a little more of his history to be known.
Lola: So you aren’t cool with them, but they have your back? That’s what I took from that.
She looks up at the top of the elevator.
Lola: This elevator looks like it could break down any day now. Why don’t they keep up on things around here?
She looks at the man in front of her, and he has the exterior of someone she hasn’t met before. Alechs’ body language completely different from their previous encounter at Avery’s school or the coffee shop.
Alechs: They are cool. I am cool. It’s not about liking people. It’s about respect. You step out of line, and you get crossed. Simple.
The elevator is about halfway up.
Alechs: Just be happy the elevator is working.
He suggests that it doesn’t work some of the time, and she can only imagine climbing 27 floors up.
Lola: Yeah, I guess. That’s alot of climbing otherwise.
She thinks back to the comments he just made about the men they encountered.
Lola: Maybe those guys should earn respect instead of talking to you like that. Do you know how hard I was biting my tongue?
He laughs shaking his head.
Alechs: You wouldn’t understand. This place is all about being hard. If you are soft, you are done for. Period. Respect is something earned in different ways than elsewhere.
The elevator dings as they exit the elevator. Stains on the carpet as well as plenty of doors show a series of units.
Alechs: Down here, this is it. Last chance, you ready for that?
Lola: I’m not backing down. You really don’t know me well enough yet. Do I look scared?
She laughs.
Lola: I’m definitely hungry though.
Despite her words, she feels her heart rate climb as they pass each unit. She looks to the side as a curtain moves away from the window. She whispers.
Lola: For some reason I feel like I stand out here…
Alechs: Maybe it’s your fancy clothes? Designer bag?
He smiles, shaking his head. They head to a door as he puts a key into the door and opens it. Immediately she sees a big curtain splitting the main area, with a kitchen to one side and a hall to the other.
Alechs: Ma, I’m home.
Two younger males, in their mid and late teens, run past the door into the kitchen.
Alechs: Antonio. Arturo. Get in here, I have someone for you to meet.
Alechs steps into the apartment, and encourages her to step into the apartment. He closes the door behind her. She glances around, smiling.
Lola: Do you want to take these food bags from me? I’m not sure where to sit them.
She seems excited to meet the family.
Lola: After I meet everyone, we can go to your room if you want? You still need to rest that ankle.
Alechs: Yeah. My room.
He smiles as the two boys come and grab the bags from her. They run back into the kitchen.
Alechs: Into the kitchen we go.
The two of them head into the kitchen as the bags are on the table. Both brothers stand there, and then Alech’s mother. She looks a bit different then Alechs.
Alechs: This is my ma, Alerie.
Lola smiles and sits her expensive bag down on the table next to the food bags. She holds her hand out towards Alerie.
Lola: It’s nice to meet you, I’m Lola.
She notices the difference between Alechs and her in appearance, but doesn’t ask any questions.
Arturo: Wait… are you…. Lola…. Lola Canteras?
Antonio: No freaking way!
Alerie: Watch your mouth.
Antonio: Sorry, ma.
Arturo: Wait.. how do you know Alechs?
Lola: Well, I’m a big fan of professional wrestling and the other day I stopped by Avery Miles’ gym or school, whatever it is. Somehow, I got partnered up with Alechs and let me tell you, he was a ray of sunshine when we first met, weren’t you, Alechs?
She laughs and looks over at her trainer, who seems slightly calmer and more relaxed since entering their apartment.
Alerie: My Alechs is just like his poppa. Rough on the outside, but sweet on the inside. Like a hard candy.
She laughs, Alechs shakes his head. He hobbles slightly.
Alerie: Your ankle okay?
Alechs: Yeah ma. It’s good. I’ll be fine to work tomorrow.
Alerie: Good.
Alechs: You wanna grab our food and go eat, La?
Lola: Yeah, sounds good to me.
She gives each brother a smile as well as Alerie.
Lola: It was nice to meet all of you. I’m going to grab a bite with Alechs and then make sure he props this ankle up and then I’ll be out of your hair. Thanks for welcoming me into your home.
The two of them head off into his “room” which is half of the living room, curtained off. His brothers check her out as they walk away, Alechs looking back and mouthing to them to knock it off.
Alechs: Yeah.. so… this is my “room”.
Lola: It’s cozy...intimate. How many nights have you laid down, looked up at the ceiling and thought about your future?
She begins unbagging the food, handing his over to him. She picks a fry out of the bag and holds it over towards him.
Lola: Here, eat a fry. It’ll get those angry wrinkles off of your face.
She teases and pushes the fry towards his mouth.
He eats it and snickers a bit.
Alechs: You are real genuine. I appreciate that.
He bites his inner cheek. Grabbing a fry, he slides a fry to her mouth as well.
Alechs: I often just dream about making it big. I cannot wait until it happens.
He smiles knowing it is getting late.
Alechs: You are sweet, taking care of me and all.
Lola: Well it was my fault you hurt yourself in the first place, well, indirectly my fault.
She eats a fry and then begins unwrapping her hamburger.
Lola: If you would have just told me that the ankle wasn’t safe to work on, you wouldn’t have gotten hurt, but then we wouldn’t be eating burgers at 1 in the morning and bonding, so I guess it worked out.
She takes a bite, swallowing before looking over at him.
Lola: Do you know how liberating it is just to eat one of these? I constantly have people telling me to watch what I eat all week. Telling me I need to fit in all of these crazy outfits for my shows and sometimes I just wanna tell everyone to back off and let me live my life, you know?
She eats another fry.
Lola: Growing up...I was teased about my weight at school. I wasn’t the standard for ‘pretty’ at my school. I’m happy with how I turned out though.
She looks down at her burger before taking a small bite.
Alechs: Eat up, La. You are very pretty. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.
Without a second thought, he leans forward and kisses her cheek. She stops chewing as her eyes move but her head doesn’t. Alechs pulls back, just looking at her.
Lola: Was that your way of telling me I had ketchup on my face or was that...what I think it was?
She blinks a few times before finally moving her head to face him.
Alechs: Not used to someone being sweet on you?
He smiles, confidently with her. He sees the time as they begin to finish up their food.
Alechs: I know you should be getting back soon. I am going to walk you to your car when you are ready.
Lola: No, you need to rest your ankle, I’m serious. I’ll be fine to walk myself to my car. I’ll text you when I make it there, okay?
She finishes up her fries and has a bite or two left of her burger. She hasn’t acknowledged the kiss other than her initial comment.
Lola: And rest the ankle for a few days, okay? We can continue my training when you’re really ready to get in the ring again.
Alechs: Absolutely not. I am walking you down, and nothing you can say will change that. I will be fine. And I cannot wait to get back into the ring with you again.
He gathers up their trash.
Alechs: You ready to walk down?
Lola: Yeah, I’m ready.
She stands up from his small bed, lifting her purse up with her. She pulls the curtain back and walks towards the door, but stops, allowing him to lead the way.
Lola: Do you think those guys will still be out there?
She maneuvers herself closer to Alechs, ready to grab his arm if she has to.
Alechs: They probably are, yeah. All night they are out there.
They head out to the door. Both of his brothers thank her, as well as his mom.
Alerie: Thank you sweetie. You can come back anytime.
Lola smiles. Alechs opens the door to allow Lola to exit into the hallway.
She steps out and takes two steps before waiting for Alechs. He quietly pulls the door shut behind him and the two begin walking side by side back towards the elevator.
Lola: Thanks for bringing me by for a little bit. It was good to meet your family and pig out without any eyes on me.
Alechs: No problem. I enjoy being around you.
He smiles, blushing a bit.
They head down towards the elevator and back downstairs. Exiting the building, the two men there are gone, but as they look up ahead they see that her car is okay except there is only two men in front of the car now. As Alechs and Lola approach it, he nods at the two men and he opens the door for Lola to get into her car.
Alechs: Seriously. Thank you again for everything. I hope you still want to train sometime.
Lola: I would love to.
She puts the key in and starts her car.
Lola: I have to hit the studio this week and work on my album and I have a few events to attend, but as soon as your ankle is well enough to move on it, I’m dropping everything to return to the gym. I want this, Alechs, like..you have no idea. Seeing you move around like you did tonight was enough to motivate me to catch up to you. I like being the best at whatever I do, so watch out.
She laughs and stands up out of the car one more time, wrapping her arms around him. She whispers.
Lola: Is this hug making you look soft in front of those guys?
Alechs: Not if I do this…
He pulls back slightly and kisses her. She stares him in the eyes after and whispers again.
Lola: You can only get away with that because I don’t want you getting beat up.
She sticks her tongue out and sits back down into the car, pulling both legs in as he shuts the door for her. Her window rolls down.
Lola: Text me when you make it back inside, okay?
He leans into the car.
Alechs: Okay. And thank you again.
He smiles at her.
He backs up as she begins to back out of the spot, and he makes his way to the front door of the building, watching her pull away into the night.
