Outside of the SoCal Grappling Academy, Avery Miles III waits for the arrival of a very special guest. Avery looks at his watch, the guest is only a few minutes late, but he has things to do. Before he can finish his thoughts, he finally see’s a long, black, limo pull up outside of his establishment. The driver exits and walks around to the back passenger side of the limo and nods to Avery. He then pulls open the door and out steps someone that Avery has met before at a few shows of the NGW West Coast Tour, that someone is pop sensation, Lola Canteras. The driver helps her out and she looks over at Avery who has a grin on his face.
Lola: Avery! How’s it going?
The pop star gives the successful wrestler a friendly hug as the two then study each other. She’s wearing jeans, expensive heels and has a denim jacket over a white top. Her hair is slightly brighter than the last time Miles saw her.
Avery: Hello Miss Canteras.
He looks at his watch.
Avery: Little late today? I have a school to run, and a schedule to keep. You are sweet and I am sure tons of people adore you, but I need to keep things running around here.
She’s immediately apologetic.
Lola: I’m really sorry, that was definitely my fault. I had a show last night, got in late and overslept by a few minutes.
She continues, hoping she hasn’t ruined their working relationship already.
Lola: If I ruined your day, I’ll do whatever it takes to make it better. I just wanted to sit in on your session and see what you guys do here. I think I told you at the last show I did with NGW that I was a big fan.
Avery: Well I guess you are lucky that my daughter is a big fan… even at three years old she knows your music.
He smiles, daughter, that was definitely a new word to him.
Avery: Follow me inside. I actually have a student that has been training some able to take you around. Follow me.
Avery opens the door and enters as she follows in behind him. The front of the building is more of a gym than anything she would consider a school. But as the continue on, in the back of the building is a series of rings. A few people are working out, but inside she sees a larger man and another man a bit shorter; this man is a bit more on the flashy side with a tuft of hair dyed white.
Lola: So let me guess, that big guy is showing me around, isn’t he?
She laughs.
Lola: I don’t need a bodyguard or anything, I doubt anyone here even knows who I am. The smaller guy...let me catch the tour with him?
Avery: He was the one I planned for anyways. His name is Alechs. But he doesn’t seem to be fond of outsiders of wrestling too much… so you will get an honest feel.
Avery cups his hands and yells.
Avery: Alechs. Get down here. I got something for you.
The 5 foot 10 inch man looks over and catches a glimpse of Lola, next to Avery. He looks disinterested as he drops to the mat, and rolls out of the ring. Grabbing a water bottle, he takes a swig and makes his way over.
Avery: Alechs, Lola. Lola, Alechs. Show her around. Maybe let her know what we do here. I NEED to go and pickup Brooklyn from the sitter. Taylor will be in shortly as well to train. If either of you need anything, you know that Chief has got you.
He points to the large man inside of the ring.
Alechs: Uh huh, sure.
Lola: Thanks again, Avery.
As Avery walks away, Lola looks at Alechs.
Lola: So Avery was just telling me that you guys do some pretty incredible stuff here. I’ve been a fan for awhile, I watch whenever I can but with the constant travel and performing and recording...life can be a bit hectic.
She holds her hand out.
Lola: I know he introduced us, but Lola Canteras. I like that little thing you did with your hair too.
Alechs doesn’t shake her hand, he simply looks at it.
Alechs: Recording what? Matches or something? You training to be an interviewer? Get my good side. It’s my right side.
He turns his face as Lola begins laughing.
Lola: No, no, I’m not training to do interviews, I actually want to learn to wrestle. My last album didn’t do as well as the label wanted and honestly, I don’t have the passion for it that I had when I first signed. I want something new, a new challenge...I want to wrestle.
She finally pulls her hand away, deciding not to cause any waves. This was a place she knew nothing about and she wasn’t about to disrespect anyone.
He shakes his head.
Alechs: Are you like, a singer or something? Follow me.
He begins to walk first to the rear of the building. Through a series of halls and finally two doors.
Alechs: These are the locker rooms. Mens. Womens. Pretty self explanatory.
Lola: So Avery runs things really professional here? I’ve seen some gyms where its a fend for yourself type of deal.
She can’t help but point out his hair again.
Lola: So whats up with the hair though? I really like it. It made you stand out right away when I was looking around at everyone. Is that part of your thing? Are you like...Alechs the skunk?
A playful laugh escapes her as she looks around at the lockers.
He pushes his hand to the wall, and looks into her eyes, face-to-face.
Alechs: Look. I was asked to give this little… tour. I’ll play nice and do my job. But I take this seriously. I have no clue who are you and simply don’t care. You didn’t hack it at whatever you did before, that is your business. I’ve come here as a way of finishing my training and I plan on becoming simply the best in the game. I have a knack for my thing. And Avery knows it. I don’t know why he gave me this little babysitting gig, but let’s get it over with. Got it?
Lola: Got it.
She decides not to challenge his assumption at being unable to hack it in her chosen career, instead she tries pushing the focus back on why she’s there.
Lola: I think it’s cool that you’re training to be the best. I always told myself that if anyone outworked me in whatever I chose, that I deserve to fall behind and they deserve that top spot. You share the same mentality.
She continues following him.
Lola: Where are you from? What made you choose to become a wrestler?
Alechs: I am here because I’ve always been a fan of wrestling. Watched it growing up. I saw the stars in the ring and always wanted to be a performer. I had a shitty life growing up and it is what got me through. Okay? I’m from LA. And the hair? I like it. I like to be myself. Anymore questions Lolli?
Lola: It’s actually Lola…
She decides maybe getting to know him isn’t the best icebreaker.
Lola: I won’t ask any more questions, I was doing something us normal people typically call socializing, making conversation.
Not sure what to say, he continues on. He assumes she is just another passerby seeing that wrestling is a fun fake sport on tv that any ex-cheerleader with half of a brain can do. Growing up as one of three to a single mom, he’s tough on anyone around them because most people haven’t had it as hard as he has. He continues up the hall as they come to two opposite doors.
Alechs: This is the kitchen. And this is a quiet room.
Lola: Got it, I won’t say a word.
She taps on his shoulder from behind.
Lola: Actually, I have one question.
Alechs looks annoyed, but lets her continue.
Lola: If I show you that I’m not just some pretty pop star here for a field trip, and that I have a genuine interest in wrestling, will you be a little easier on me?
Alechs: You are a singer. I get it.
He breathes deep.
Alechs: Fine. How can you convince me?
Lola: That would be the easy way out, letting me pick my own way. How about this...you give me a trivia question, something about NGW...and if I get it wrong, I’ll make your day easier and leave. But if I get it right? We both treat each other with respect and maybe you teach me a move or two? Fair?
Placing his hand to his forehead, he figures that she has no clue at all. But he will play along.
Alechs: Fine. Name the longest reigning champion in NGW history. Period.
Lola: Gavin Grimes. He just broke Bronx’s record, right? I might be a little rusty, the travel and all, but I’ve watched as much as I could. NGW is actually my favorite wrestling company.
Hoping she’s right, she tries to read his expression.
Alechs: Nope. Wrong. Gavin is the second longest… Carmine Reaper is the longest. Oops. Too bad.
Lola: I guess this is the part where I’m supposed to make your day easier and leave, but if I know anything about wrestling...giving up is as bad as never trying. I want to stay. I want to learn something, or at least watch. Please?
Alechs: Fine. I will give you another chance. So again, kitchen. Quiet room.
He turns the light on showing that it is a room with a couple of couches, and not much else.
Alechs: A good place to meditate or just relax. Follow me.
Heading further back up the hall, they pass Avery’s office. And then back into the main room. There are three rings. As well as various weights, gym equipment, and workout machines.
Alechs: Inside of the ring, that is Big Chief. Or just Chief. Why they call a pale Irish dude “Chief”? No clue. He is Avery’s right hand man here at SGA.
Lola: Hey if anyone that big told me to call him Chief, I would.
She laughs, still sensing the standoffish attitude in her guide.
Lola: Just so we’re clear by the way, I don’t think being a singer makes me any better than you, so if you’re avoiding eye contact except for when you’re yelling at me because you think I’m judging you...you can let your guard down.
He turns to face her as she puts her hands on her hips.
Lola: Do I get to watch you wrestle?
She asks with an excited glimmer in her eyes.
The truth be told, he was quite taken back by her looks, but he was here to train and learn. Nothing would get in the way of that.
Alechs: Sure. Why not. You can have a seat… there.
He points at a chair.
Alechs: Big Chief and I will do a dry run and show ya some spots.
He raises an eyebrow to see if she knows the language.
Lola: Cool, do I get some popcorn or something?
His eyes lower and she laughs.
Lola: It was a joke.
She takes a seat on the chair.
Lola: Taking any spots with Chief could be dangerous, do you always work with him or people similar in size? Why not work with someone your own weight, wouldn’t that be more beneficial?
Alechs: No. It wouldn’t. I am not the norm for size, but I use that to my advantage. And guys Big Chief’s size, they are the norm. Get used to it now. And I was told that I am going to work with Avery’s girl, Taylor, as well.
He climbs up onto the ring apron, flipping into the ring landing on his feet. Chief nods towards him as Alechs charges him. A duck of a clothesline and Alechs hits the round and springboards catching Chief off guard with a DDT, as he spikes the larger man on his head. Alechs remains on his feet.
Lola begins clapping and catches a look from Alechs who is trying to keep his focus.
Lola: Why don’t you pin him? He’s down!
Alechs: We are running through some moves. Not looking to pin. Counters, and attacks.
The distraction gets Alechs taken down with a shoulder tackle and he grunts in pain. Chief tries to use a boot to choke Alechs, but he manages to grab the ropes, pop up, and avoids the boot. A jump straight up into the air, Alechs hits a huge dropkick to Chief’s chest that stumbles him back. Not letting up, Alechs uses the ropes and hits a spinning elbow with some high air time.
The pop star is on the edge of her seat. Alechs isn’t looking in her direction, but if he did, he would be able to tell that she’s invested in what’s going on in the ring.
Lola: Okay okay, if this were a real match, after the elbow, he’ll get to his feet...slowly. You have time to think of a big move, maybe a superkick or something?
Alechs: I am not a power guy. I need to use my speed. You want to see something? Sure.
Chief slowly gets up to his feet as Alechs runs up the corner with ease. Turning around, he faces Chief inside of the ring. Alechs jumps off landing onto the shoulders of Chief, and carries the momentum into a hurricanrana! He holds the legs and makes the pin as Alechs yells.
Alechs: One! Two! Three!
Lola, excited after seeing her guide take down someone as big as Chief, stands from the chair and hurries over, carefully in her expensive heels. She stops outside of the ring and starts clapping.
Lola: Alechs! That was amazing! I could literally see you in NGW doing that right now. How long have you been training?
She rests her elbows on the ring and peers in under the bottom rope.
Alechs: I’ve been here in Diego for a week and a half or so, but I’ve been training off and on for about a year now. Nothing formal… just learning the ropes from those I can work to pay off for their “lessons”.
He uses the term lessons loosely.
Lola: And now you’re learning under one of the best. Avery has been a class act every time I’ve met him. Honestly, there aren’t many that would let me come in and get a peek at what you guys do, free of charge. Most people would probably laugh in my face about wanting to learn to wrestle, but he never did. The only thing he asked was that I respect him, his gym and the business, which I promised I would.
She looks up, its obvious she wants to step into the ring, to see what it feels like, but knowing Alechs has been so far, she’s hesitant to ask.
Alechs: Hey Big Chief, you okay?
The big man nods and smiles.
Chief: I am taking five. You head up the ring.
Alechs: Got it.
Alechs smiles down at Lola.
Alechs: Respect is important. Without it, you are a joke. There are too many jokers in this industry. That is lesson one. Respect. Always.
Lola: You don’t have to worry about respect with me. Which means I should probably apologize about the skunk comment earlier, I was trying to break the ice and have fun, but that was really immature, so I’m sorry.
Alechs: Thank you. Jokes are for when we are off of the clock.
He looks at the clock on the wall.
Alechs: We are on the clock right now.
Looking down to her, he steps on the bottom rope, and pulls up the middle rope.
Alechs: Are you getting in here to learn lesson two yet?
Lola: Seriously!?
A smile spreads across her face as she climbs up onto the ring apron. Carefully, she steps between the ropes and is walking carefully in her heels, not wanting to damage the ring. She props herself up in the corner, hands at her side.
Lola: I can’t believe I’m in an actual ring! I remember watching people I looked up to from home wrestle in a ring just like this...and now I’M in here. It doesn’t feel real, man.
She grabs the top rope on each side of her for balance, squeezing it enough to secure herself.
Alechs: First off, again.. Respect. Take those damn heels off.
He shakes his head, pulling on the top rope, stretching out some more.
Lola: I’m sorry. I didn’t know if that would have been disrespectful in itself.
She watches Alechs stretch for a moment before taking each heel off, one by one. The expensive shoes are sat down in the corner. She already feels more balance and security. She walks over to Alechs who is stretching. She’s now a few inches shorter out of the heels, back to her normal 5’7’’.
Lola: There, now lesson two?
He quickly grabs her arms and shoots her into the ropes.
Alechs: Go with it!
Luckily, her jacket prevents her from feeling the full effect of the ropes for the first time. She bounces off and nearly loses her balance, stumbling to a stop but remaining on her feet. She places a hand on her chest.
Lola: Okay...I wasn’t expecting that!
She takes her denim jacket off, tossing it towards the same corner where she left her shoes.
Lola: Alechs, you trying to give me a heart attack now?
With a laugh, she removes her hand from her chest as her breathing begins returning to normal.
Without warning, he jumps hitting a standing dropkick with his feet only inches from her. He lands on the mat as she just stands there. She can see him smile as he gets back up to his feet.
Alechs: You want to do this? You need to be an athlete. You don’t need to know wrestling, that can be taught. It helps knowing it. But athletes… can learn. Are you an athlete Lola? CAN you learn?
Lola: I can learn….
She looks down at Alechs, and offers a hand.
Lola: I was also taught that if someone is down in front of you, don’t kick ‘em...help ‘em up.
He smiles, reaching up as she pulls Alechs up to his feet.
Alechs: Lesson three. Why? Why do you want to do this? Why this and not…. Working at Chipotle? Or running a music label? Or even modeling?
He smiles, hinting at his feelings towards her looks.
Lola: Modeling? That’s a good one, but if you’ve noticed, I’m not a stick figure.
With a laugh, she continues.
Lola: But wrestling is one of those things that I’ve always loved but honestly never thought I could do. I’ve always loved performing for people, that was what really motivated me to chase the music thing as hard as I did, but I’ve done that. I’ve sold a million records and now I want a new challenge, not just something to pass the time, but something I’m passionate about.
She mumbles the next part quietly under her breath.
Lola: Not to mention that my label is threatening to drop me due to my sales being down…
Alechs: A million records? Wait… are you like famous or something?
Alechs is taken back, legitimately has no clue who she was. And he mumbles under his breath as well.
Alechs: Stick figure? More like a goddess.
She heard the mumbling, but wouldn’t make a big deal out of it, instead she just offered a smile.
Lola: I’m kind of famous. I’ve opened up for people you might have heard of...Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, One Direction, even Drake.
She tries to read his reaction but he’s keeping a stone-face at the moment.
Lola: I thought that’s why you were being extra hard on me when I first got here, like you wanted to break me. Well spoiler alert...there’s no breaking me, this is something I want to do. If you don’t help me learn, I’ll find someone who will.
She spoke confidently, keeping eye contact to show Alechs she was serious.
He claps.
Alechs; Bravo. That is what I want to see. Passion. And honestly. Never heard of you. But then again, “Pop” isn’t really my thing.
He scoffs.
Alechs: I want you to run the ropes, and come at me. Okay? Show me some quickness. Show me that you are ready to sweat. That you are ready to get out of breath.
Lola: Okay...I’ve got this.
Lola tucks her hair behind her ear, not that it will matter when she starts running. She looks at the ropes, focusing in on them. Slowly, she takes off, but right before she hits the ropes she picks up speed, bouncing off of them. Knowing she has more to prove than the average trainee, she doesn’t show the pain that shoots through her body as she bounced off. She has tunnel vision as she rapidly approaches Alechs. She’s unsure of what to do but keeps running towards him as she was instructed.
He quickly catches her, tossing her up into the air. She appears weightless to the compact young man as she comes back down and he catches her and sets her back onto her feet and he flips forward “selling” that she somehow did that to him. He lands onto his back flat taking a hard bump and showing just how athletic he is. He laughs.
Alechs: I didn’t think that you had it in you.
Lola quickly begins to ease up as well, sensing the tension between them is melting away due to the playfulness of the once guarded, uptight Alechs.
Lola: Wasting time almost always means a kick out. I’m not wasting any more!
She laughs as she slowly, carefully gets to her knees and then places both hands, palm down on the mat as she rests her chest against his.
Lola: One...Two…
He lets her pin him.
Alechs: Three.
He laughs, a much different Alechs then before. He sees that she is not some fake Hollywood girl and that she is real. Just as she is pinning him, Big Chief walks back towards the ring.
Chief: Uh….
Alechs: And that is the next lesson. Always go for the pin.
Alechs tries to play off the moment as all business. He quickly backs up and gets back to his feet, offering a hand to her to help her up. She takes his hand as he pulls her to her feet swiftly. Lola looks over at Chief who is now right outside the ring.
Lola: I haven’t introduced myself yet. Lola Canteras.
She walks over to the side of the ring Chief is on and leans under the top rope, extending her hand.
Lola: I might have just pinned Alechs too, no biggie.
She jokes.
Chief: Yeah. Awesome.
He is not a man of many words and heads up into the ring.
Alechs: All set Big Chief. I am going to go down to the coffee shop a couple of doors down and get myself some tea. You want anything?
The big man shakes his head no.
Alechs: Care to join me, Lola? My treat.
Lola: Free coffee? Like I could turn that down. Let’s do this.
She walks over to the corner and picks up her jacket, draping it over the top rope. She looks at Alechs.
Lola: Could I borrow you real quick? I just need a shoulder to grab so I don’t bust my butt while putting these shoes back on.
He nods, heading over to her, allowing her to maintain balance.
Alechs: Next time, better shoes. Mmmkay?
He said “next time” assuming, and hoping, that there would be a next time. She slid her heels on as he opened the ropes for her once again. She stepped between the ropes, sat down on the ring apron and then waited for him to slide out of the ring. She took it upon herself to grab onto his upper arm and hop down slowly, using him for balance again.
Lola: I think getting out of the ring in these shoes was the toughest part of the day.
With a laugh, she gripped his arm slightly tighter, quickly realizing what she was doing, she let it go almost immediately.
He smiles.
Alechs: No problem. After you.
He leads her towards the front of the building as they head out. The academy is just a storefront on a strip mall for the time being, but all businesses have to start somewhere. He exits the school after her and they hang a left, heading two doors down to “The Happy Bean” coffee shop. He holds the door open for her as they head inside.
Alechs: You ever been here?
Lola: I’ve been to alot of coffee shops but I can honestly say I’ve NEVER been to The Happy Bean.
Showing off her playfulness, she tilts her nose into the air and sniffs like a puppy would.
Lola: It smells good, though. I love the smell of coffee shops. I used to go to Barnes and Noble when I was younger, just so I could read the fashion magazines while smelling the Starbucks coffee. They were like..attached together or however you say it.
There are a few people in the shop. She hangs close to Alechs, hoping to blend in.
Lola: What are you going to get to drink?
Alechs: I am a chilled green tea sort of guy. Something simple, a bit sweet, and refreshing.
He smiles as they step forward. He orders his drink to the barista.
Alechs: And for the pretty lady…
He turns towards her.
Lola: I’ll take the same. Chilled green tea has never sounded better for some reason.
The barista smiles and puts the order in. She then leans in and whispers.
Barista: Are you...Lola Canteras?
Lola glances over at Alechs before looking back at the barista.
Lola: I am...yes. Do you want an autograph?
The barista looks like she’s about to yell out and attract attention to the pair but Lola leans in closer to her.
Lola: Slide a cup over and a marker, I’ll sign it but PLEASE don’t make a big deal? I’m kinda out with my boyfriend and we want some privacy.
Alechs looks at her, shaking his head at her using him as a bargaining tool. The barista slides a cup and marker over as Lola signs it and mouths ‘thank you.’ She then stands back up straight and leans close to Alechs.
Lola: The boyfriend thing works everytime...fake boyfriend.
She playfully elbows him in his side.
He smiles, showing his dimples in his cheeks.
Alechs: Alright, fake girlfriend.
He takes advantage of the situation and wraps his arm around her waist as the two of them head towards the back of the shop grabbing a secluded table. He pulls out a chair for her as she sits down, and he sits down himself across from her.
Alechs: You are like, legit famous. Aren’t you?
Lola: Not that it matters, but yeah. I’ve been on magazine covers, performed all around the world, done alot of cool things, but sometimes fame can make it hard to do things like this. Don’t get me wrong, I love and appreciate all of my fans, because without them I wouldn’t live the blessed life that I’m living now...but sometimes I miss normalcy.
The barista brings their drinks over.
Lola: Thank you.
Lola takes a sip of the green tea and looks at Alechs.
Lola: I have to ask, you REALLY had no idea who I was? Do you...never watch tv or something?
He shakes his head ‘no’.
Alechs: I’ve had my nose to the grindstone for awhile now. Training. Working two jobs to try to make ends meet for my younger brothers and my mom. I still live at home. I don’t have time to enjoy much. And the music I put on while training, it is usually some EDM or something. I don’t know. I guess it just keeps me moving.
He takes a sip of the green tea.
Alechs: I cannot believe I am sitting here with some sort of star. Should I… ask for your autograph or something?
He laughs.
Lola: If you did I would definitely say unfortunately I’m off the clock.
She laughs as his face drops in surprise.
Lola: But I would probably give you my number instead, you know...so that we can plan more of these sessions? Unless you’d rather me contact Avery directly, I could always do that. I wouldn’t want to throw you off of your focus.
He is taken back, this star willing to give her number. It likely goes to her assistant, or her assistant’s assistant.
Alechs: Sure, I’d be happy to plan more of these sessions. I am sure Avery would be cool with it. I mean, if you are.
He tries to not get tongue tied.
Alechs: And I think I could definitely make some time to show you some stuff.
Lola: Cool, thanks. I’m thinking I’m about to start prioritizing training for wrestling and slow down on the music career. After tonight’s performance, I might put everything on hold. I know that in order to be the best at something, you have to dedicate everything towards it. I’m not trying to fit in or find myself a role in wrestling, if I’m doing it, I want to be one of the best.
She takes another drink, and looks serious about it.
Lola: When I have someone like you willing to put the effort in to help me, I know its all or nothing. I don’t want to waste your time.
He smiles.
Alechs: I appreciate that. Wrestling is my way out. It’s how I intend on getting my family out of the neighborhood.
He drifts off thinking about everything.
Alechs: What about you? What is your family like?
Lola: My family is amazing, they’ve been so supportive. My mom and dad have been married for 28 years. I’m an only child and growing up, we did all kinds of awesome things. I went to my first Dodgers game at three, Lakers the same year, and by the time I was five, I was enrolled in singing lessons. I knew from the moment I could talk that I wanted to entertain people and my parents nurtured me to chase my dream and here I am. They still live in the same house they did from even before i was born. I offered to buy them a bigger home, but they have refused. I think that’s what has always kept me humble, them. They never got a big head over their daughter being this huge pop star, and I was raised to be like them.
A smile crosses her face, she has had a charmed life, but it hasn’t ruined her like it would some. She takes another drink.
Lola: When you say the neighborhood, does your family live in a tough area?
Alechs: East L.A. Yeah. Not very safe. My moms works as a nurse and cleans houses too. My younger brothers are still in school.
He looks down at the the drink, swirling it around with his straw.
Alechs: Never met my pops.
Lola: I’m sorry to hear that.
She suddenly wishes she would have paid for the drinks but doesn’t say it. The thought just floats around her mind.
Lola: The one silver lining I guess in that is you are the man that your younger brothers look up to to set an example. Your dad missed out by not being around, but you’ve turned out okay to me.
She notices his hand twirling the straw. She reaches over and places her hand on his.
Lola: I think the drink is stirred enough.
She laughs and removes her hand from his.
Lola: Why don’t you just order a shaken tea next time?
He realizes he drifted off.
Alechs: Sorry. Just thinking.
He looks at the time.
Alechs: I think that we need to get back. I am not sure what your plans are, but I have limited time as I have been up since eight this morning and have to work overnight tonight. I have to work my security job and then am back here at eight am again. Hoping to grab a nap on my break.
He laughs, ready for a long night ahead of him. Lola stands to her feet, grabbing her drink.
Lola: Yeah, I should probably get ready to head to soundcheck anyways for my show later. I would invite you but now I know that you have to work.
An obvious but slight look of disappointment crosses her face. She sits her drink down and holds her hand out towards him.
Lola: Let me see your phone.
He pauses, not sure how to react.
Alechs: Well, I don’t really have a cell phone right now.
He is so embarrassed.
Alechs: Just the house phone. But if you write it down, I’ll keep it.
Lola has honestly never experienced anyone near her age not have a cell phone, especially in 2016. She was caught off guard, but nodded with a smile.
Lola: Give me one second.
She walked back to the barista and asked for a marker. She returned to the table and wrote down her name and number.
Lola: There...now you have my autograph and my phone number.
She smiles and looks out through the glass window as the traffic passes by.
Lola: Maybe we can get together again later in the week, at your convenience of course.
She picks her drink back up, sitting the marker down on the table.
Alechs: I’d like that. I am here at the school seven days a week. Eight a.m. Come by anyday. I’d be….. Honored.
He smiles
Alechs: You about ready?
Lola: Definitely ready. I snuck a text to my driver, he’s back outside the school waiting for me.
The two head towards the door and Alechs again makes sure he holds it for her. Lola smiles.
Lola: Thank you.
They step outside and begin the short walk back to the gym.
Lola: You know since you’re willing to help me out, I could help you too. Maybe I could pick you up a phone at least? That way it would make it easier for us to communicate? I think we need to introduce you to texting.
He looks slightly insulted, but knows that she means well.
Alechs: I know how to text. I had a phone before. I got jumped and they took it. And I haven’t had the money to buy a new one. And I couldn’t allow you to do that. I appreciate it.
Really, on the inside, he hopes that she doesn’t take no for an answer and does so anyways.
Lola: No, I get it, I didn’t mean to step on your toes. I mean, I’m only getting free training from you…
She side-eyes him with a grin.
Lola: I got it...no phone.
They reach the gym and she stops in front of her limo.
Lola: Well I had an...interesting time today. You went from being probably the biggest jerk I’ve ever seen to actually being fun to be around. I’ll do my best to make it by sometime this week to continue? I think I’ve only learned three lessons today, or was it four?
Alechs: Did you just call me a jerk? Did I wear heels inside of the ring? Or did I call you a skunk?
His eyes stare at her.
Alechs: Maybe I’ll take that phone, Misses Pop Star.
She is not sure if he is serious or joking.
Lola: Really? Now that you said maybe I’m taking that as a yes and my mind is made up. I’m bringing you a phone...as a matter of fact, maybe after my show tonight I can drop it by your second job.
Her driver exits the limo and walks around, opening her door for her. She looks at Alechs for the okay on bringing the phone by.
Alechs: Fine.
He smiles.
Alechs: A limo? Wow. Fancy, huh?
He bites his inner cheek not sure if he should hug her… shake her hand….
Driver: Miss Canteras?
Lola: Of course.
Lola extends her hand towards Alechs.
Lola: Thanks again for everything today. I learned alot.
He shakes her hand and nods. Thanks Lola.
She is helped into the limo by her driver who shuts her door. He then nods at Alechs as he enters the car as well. Slowly, the limo pulls away as Alechs stands out front, watching it leave.
Aleches heads back inside as he sees that Avery is back inside.
Avery: How did that go?
Alechs: Pretty well.
He smiles.
-END-
Lola: Avery!
He smiles.
