Nerd Paladin, Level Up!
File 017: Student | 学生
On the rooftop of an estate within Manhattan, New York, the pool is shimmering beautifully from the afternoon sunlight reflecting off of it. The building itself is seventy stories high with a fantastic view of the entire city. Just three blocks from the estate is Madison Square Garden.
Tonight, that venue that will be hosting New Generation Wrestling’s WrestleForce 2.
The camera is able to capture this wonderful view of the highest quality. There’s no breeze in the air, just the basking warmth of the sun after the heatwave the city endured. In a sudden motion, a young female with long blonde hair that’s tied back in a ponytail emerges from the deep end of the pool. She brushes a few loose strands back with her fingers before she maneuvers towards the edge and rests her arms along the top. She, too, looks in the direction of “The World’s Most Famous Arena” and releases a sigh.
“When I woke up in the late morning hours, I was… afraid.”
Of course, the blonde-haired woman’s voice is recognized as the voice of Jessica Sears. She lowers her head and rests her chin on her arms.
“The last seventy-two hours have been some of the most intense and frightening hours, minutes, and seconds of my life. My heart was tested, my hope was challenged, and all of my D&D stats required saving throws. All of them.”
As always, she interlaces pop culture references in her promotional work. It’s become a trademark of the Paladin’s because it’s one of the only ways she keeps her sanity in check.
“I thought I was going to lose Dean… forever. In between Thursday evening and Saturday evening, there were only three friends I allowed to see me. Marisol “MiMi” Francesca Cruz, Bethany Kenyon, and Loti. I shut myself out from the rest of the world. I removed myself from the electronic grid so my telecommunication buddies Rosalyn and Adam couldn’t locate me. I didn’t want to be found because I wanted to be alone. Adam’s been through this. He was understanding. Rosalyn, on the other hand…”
She takes a deep breath and lets out a sigh. That was someone she had to talk to as soon as possible. There was no doubt the artistic genius would scold her beyond the norm, but… Jessica shakes her head, and applying pressure on the palms of her hands, she pushes herself up and out of the water. She allows herself to sit on the edge of the pool and face the camera, her purple two-piece bikini in clear view.
“I will never assume that the NGW faithful know about HYBRID. They’re a newer wrestling company with two brands, Ascension the Blue and Unleashed the Red. I play on Team RED… Weird, considering I’m always Team BLU on Team Fortress 2. Unless I’m defending capture points… then that’s different.”
She offers a tiny smile and a light giggle before she composes herself.
“Last night was HYBRID’s Predator and Prey. It’s one of the company’s biggest pay-per-views of the year and last night was no exception to that statement. The show combined the talents of Unleashed and Ascension under one roof in the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The main event of the evening was simply War Games. The Resistance versus the Children of Nephilim. If the Children win, the Resistance kneels and become Fallen Angels under Lucifer’s command. If the Resistance win, Lucifer would free everyone in Hell. It was a grueling battle that lasted an hour… and I was in the match from the beginning.”
The fatigue is ever-present in Jessica’s body. Almost twenty-four hours after the match and she is far from one hundred percent. She continues on with a gentle smile on her face.
“The Resistance were victorious. Our loved ones were free, including my older brother Zachary. I wouldn’t have been able to help my friends, my Dean, to victory if it wasn’t for two very important mentors in my life…
Jaime Alejandro. My father figure and submission specialist.
Ricky Valero. My best friend and aerial technician.”
Her smile grows as she acknowledges the primary training she received from these two individuals. Her wrestling style is a hybrid of the two for a reason.
“Jaime taught me how to keep someone grounded. Ricky taught me how to fly without fear. That’s not to discredit anyone else who has trained me. Believe me, I’m eternally grateful to everyone who has helped me in my wrestling journey. However, they were the ones who gave me a chance when no one else did.
Four years ago, when I wanted to finally rise up and defend my family and friends, you took me under your wing, Jaime. You looked at this small, barely-eighteen-year-old German super nerd, her only form of self-defense swinging a Sailor Moon shoulder bag full of textbooks at a bully, and you saw the potential that no one else could even begin to see. It reminded me of my dad. He was the first person to believe in me when I said I wanted to be a professional gamer… When you first told me you were going to teach me how to wrestle, I was astonished. I was an avid wrestling fan, but I never thought of myself as a wrestler.”
A soft chuckle escapes her as she realizes how far she’s come. A lot can happen in four years.
“I remember my very first lesson. It was simple yet daunting. You challenged me to knock you down. Completely off your feet. I didn’t think I could do it, but you told me to try my best. At first, it was a futile effort. I was extremely reluctant to hit you, but whenever I did it was on the weaker side. Then you started to do something I didn’t expect you to do…
You provoked me.
It was completely intentional. You mentioned Alexander Crowe, how he sent my childhood sister Rosalyn and our friend Les Grisham to the nearest Knoxville hospital, and then something within me just… snapped. That’s when I did something that not even some of your more advanced students could do. I pulled a Solid Snake and knocked you off your feet. That’s why the punch, punch, kick combo is still within my arsenal because it has the compatibility of knocking down anyone, regardless of their size. It’s simple yet effective.”
She runs her fingers through her hair, mindful not to undo the secured ponytail, and she smiles. She looks beyond the camera for a brief moment, her soft blue eyes shimmering, and she lightly sways her legs in the water.
“I’ve come a long way since that first lesson, sensei. Two years later, I dethroned “The Beast” Jacob Daniels and became the Indy Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Champion, accomplishing the impossible. Almost two years after that, I defeated “Relentless” Andre Holmes and became the Spirit and Pride X Champion, the longest reigning champion the company will ever see. I helped the Guardians of the Galaxy overcome the Destroyers in NGW. I assisted the Resistance in winning War Games against the Children of Nephilim in HYBRID. With the end of the wars, it’s finally time for me to pursue championship gold and become one of the best wrestlers you and Ricky will always believe in.
Tonight on WrestleForce 2, the Paladin of Vengeance will finally wrestle against the Warrior Monk… And the kid from Queens will rise.”
With a confident smile on her face, she takes a slow, deep breath and dives back into the pool. The ripples of the water ebb, steady as the flow of time.
