“Consequences”
Date: July 1, 2018
Julianna DiMaria is at her San Diego home that she shares with her two roommates as she sits on the couch. Her eyes are delivering a blank expression as she appears to be staring at something in the distance. She also happens to not be sitting alone on the couch as her roommates, Christy and Ally, are sitting next to her on opposite sides.
Julianna: I can’t believe this is a thing right now…
Christy and Ally say nothing.
Voice: Honestly…
Julianna’s blank expression is explained with the sudden appearance of Dr. Montgomery, her therapist. He’s shaking his head as he walks out from behind a bulletin board that consists of a collage of Twitter screenshots of Julianna’s bad Twitter behavior.
Dr. Montgomery: That’s the same thing I say when you tweet THIS….
He points to a screenshot where Julianna is calling NGW Five Lakes Champion Jazmyn Rain a “slut”.
Dr. Montgomery: And THIS…
He points to a screenshot where Julianna is complaining and stating that she is going to quit Twitter.
Dr. Montgomery: And… you get the point. Everything on this board. You don’t like it when people talk down to you, do you?
Julianna: No… I hate it! People treat me like absolute shit!
Dr. Montgomery: “Treat people the way you want to be treated”. The golden rule! You treat people like they are beneath you and they are going to treat you the same way. For every action, there’s a reaction. I don’t understand…
Dr. Montgomery begins to pace the room making it quite obvious that he is trying to contain his anger.
Dr. Montgomery: I do everything that I can to help you! I’ve referred you to anger management. I’ve warned you that consequences are to be had if you keep up with this behavior… and yet, you continue this behavior. Why? What is it about this behavior that is so addicting to you? Why do you feel the need to continue this behavior? I tell you to not even make ONE tweet about Jessica Sears and you held on for a while before you completely imploded.
Ally: Maybe it’s because she has an addiction to social media…
Dr. Montgomery: No no… I don’t think it’s that. I know exactly what it is. Julianna knows exactly what this is and no the answer isn’t “I want to make people my bitch” or “everyone treats me like crap so I dish it back”. You know why you do this, don’t you Julianna? Oh there’s an addiction there… don’t get me wrong. So tell me… what is it?
Julianna: I… I don’t know…
Dr. Montgomery lets out an angry sigh.
Dr. Montgomery: Yes you do! I don’t need you playing this game with me. You’ve played enough games and have made enough of a joke out of this with your abhorrent behavior to begin with. How do you think your mother feels knowing that her efforts to get you all the help you need, up to this point, are completely for nothing? We’ve had a few sessions and you haven’t made ANY progress being completely insolent as you are and my goodness, you’ve driven me up a wall that I’m wondering if I’M the one that needs anger management! I want to think that you’re doing this on purpose so that I can give up on you… but deep down… I don’t think that’s what you want. Because everyone in this room knows exactly why you do all of THAT up on the board. If you won’t tell me… maybe one of your friends will?
Christy: Gladly! Julianna… I’m sorry but… you’re an attention whore!
Julianna: EXCUSE ME?
Julianna stands up and towers over Christy.
Julianna: ATTENTION WHORE???
Dr. Montgomery: SIT DOWN!!!!
Julianna is frozen in shock for a few moments, stunned that her therapist suddenly got quite a bit volatile but it’s become quite obvious that Dr. Montgomery has had enough of Julianna’s antics. The former West Coast Champion slowly sits down and takes a deep breath not knowing how to deal with what just happened.
Julianna: Dr. Montgomery… name calling isn’t going to help…
Dr. Montgomery: No… but Christy was in the ballpark. Key word: ATTENTION! That’s what this is all about, Julianna: ATTENTION! There is no common thread in any of your social media insolence… apart from this abnormal obsession with Jessica Sears… but you’re just doing this just to do it! It’s all about the attention for you. In fact, you care for attention so much that in my professional opinion, your in-ring performance is stagnating if not deteriorating.
Julianna: Wait wait wait… no… my in-ring performance is fine. You’re not a wrestling expert, you wouldn’t know!
Ally: Julianna… you lost to Cheyenne Rae… in an upset… doesn’t that say anything?
Julianna: DON’T REMIND ME!
Christy: Calm down!!!! Dr. Montgomery is right! You’re distracted so much that your in-ring career isn’t what it can be. It’s like ever since you moved up to NGW, you’ve kind of stopped trying. Unless you’re in a match with a Kayla Richards or a Martin Karloff, or there’s something personal in it for you like with Jessica… you don’t care! You certainly didn’t against Cheyenne!
Julianna rolls her eyes, still trying to fight the denial.
Dr. Montgomery: NGW psychologists have stated that in their professional opinion, you have lost the drive that got you to the main roster in the first place.
Julianna: I DO CARE!
Dr. Montgomery: About the wrong thing…
Julianna sighs.
Julianna: I mean… no shit I want the spotlight! But that’s EVERY wrestler!
Dr. Montgomery: You, however… take it to the extreme! And yet, I don’t blame you at all. I really can’t. I may be angry with you for being so insolent about this therapy but it is my job to help you see the light and focus on correcting your behaviors. You want the attention because your father never gave you the attention that you wanted…
Julianna: No no, that’s… uh…
Julianna pauses as she notices that her voice begins to quiver.
Julianna: I mean… you know… uh…
Dr. Montgomery: Julianna, you’re among people that are trying to help you here. Nobody is going to judge you for speaking your inner truth.
Ally: Especially us! We’ve put up with your antics more than anyone. If it were anyone else, we would have split by now.
Christy: We genuinely DO care about you… even if you may not agree with how we show it. We both observed that the only attention your parents would want to give you during your training was about your career and nothing else. Your dad never praised you.
Julianna: You guys… ENOUGH! I don’t want to TALK about this right now!
Julianna’s eyes begin to fill up with tears.
Julianna: I don’t want to talk about my fucking dad who I completely avoided on Father’s Day only for him to leave me a voicemail the next day cussing me the fuck out over not contacting him at all! You think I WANTED that? HELL NO!
Dr. Montgomery: Do you still have that voicemail?
Julianna: What the fuck??? That’s not important!
Dr. Montgomery: Do you, or do you not have it?
Julianna: Why? What does it matter?
Dr. Montgomery: I want to listen to it, if you haven’t deleted it by now.
Julianna: ...that’s not going to happen… especially with these two wanting to secretly film everything!
Ally: There are no cameras, Julianna… we promise.
Christy: HEY! I got your phone!
Julianna sighs as Christy indeed has her phone.
Julianna: This isn’t going to help. This is humiliating!
Julianna is continuing to panic, but not in an eruptive sort of way.
Christy: No… it WILL help and hey… it’s still here!
Julianna: Look, if you’re going to play the fucking thing, at least let me do it myself!
Julianna snatches the phone away from Christy.
Dr. Montgomery: For the record, I’m only requesting to listen to the voicemail to ensure that he hasn’t made any violent threats toward your life or anything like that.
Julianna: Yeah… sure…
Julianna’s hand trembles some as she presses play for the voicemail to run.
Mr. DiMaria (via voicemail): What the FUCK, Jules? Where the fuck were you yesterday? No phone call! No visit! NOTHING! Did you forget it was Father’s Day or something? JEEZ, why the fuck did you have to inherit your mother’s stubbornness? What is wrong with you? You don’t appreciate any of the shit I’ve done for you, do you? You forget that the only reason why you even have a sorry excuse of a career is because I allowed it to happen and I made it happen! You’ve been fucking embarrassing since being called up to the NGW roster and it’s making me SICK! All I’ve ever done for you and instead of beatin’ up on top contenders, you’re wasting your fuckin’ time dealing with guys in a mask? My GOD… you’ll NEVER get anywhere pulling that sort of nonsense! I hate to say it… but I gotta say it… honestly Jules… I’m… I’m sometimes ashamed that you’re my daughter… I hate to say it… but… I am. You’ll never be a champion there. You’re not good enough. Hopeless. Stinkin’ hopeless! Right now I just want a beer… another beer… fuckin’ disgrace me by losing to Cheyenne Rae again while you’re at it… fucking hell… that was embarrassing… like your relationship with that Jimmy guy… of all the guys you had to lose your virginity to….
Julianna’s phone slips out of her hand and it breaks upon hitting the floor. She covers her face with her hands and it’s no secret at this point that she’s bawling her eyes out having heard that voicemail again. Christy pulls her in and gives her a shoulder to cry on as she does everything she can to comfort her.
Dr. Montgomery: That phone breaking was a blessing in disguise…
He shakes his head.
Dr. Montgomery: New phone… new number. You need to stay away from him. The less you’re exposed to him, the better you’ll be. In my professional opinion… you need to get a temporary restraining order on him because he’s not good for your psychological well being at the moment.
Julianna lifts her face off of Christy’s shoulder as her eyes are nearly red and full of tears.
Julianna: He was drunk…
Dr. Montgomery: No excuse! He said it. I understand why you behave the way you do. It’s a pattern. He never changes his behavior, you’ve noticed that, so you figure why bother changing yours? Still… I told you that there would be consequences for tweeting about Jessica…
Julianna: No… please don’t…
Dr. Montgomery: Don’t… what?
Julianna: I’m NOT losing my independence!!!! You’re not going to force me to be under my mother’s custody!!!!
Dr. Montgomery: I’m not going to do that! Honestly? I think you need to stay away from your parents while they work out their divorce. Being with your mother won’t do you any good. But what WILL do you some good is if you stay off of social media for a while.
Julianna: No… NO….
Dr. Montgomery: Your friends are going to run your account… that way YOU focus on getting better and being a better wrestler.
Julianna: UGH!!!!!
Julianna tries to stand, but Christy and Ally hold her down.
Julianna: The password was… um… “jessicahasafakeass”
Dr. Montgomery: Why am I not surprised?
He sighs.
Dr. Montgomery: We’ve got a long way to go, Julianna… but I think you’ll see the light sooner than you think.
Dr. Montgomery turns and walks away from the collage of screenshots before making his way out of the home. While all of this is happening, Ally was messing with her phone.
Ally: ...wow, that really was the password… until NOW!
Christy: Julianna…
Julianna stands up, and this time her friends don’t try to hold her back.
Julianna: I just want to be left alone… and honestly? I think I want to move out of state or something and get away from all this!
Julianna walks away from her friends. Christy and Ally sit there alone, an expression of concern on their faces as they hear the sound of a door slamming shut in the distance.
Christy: I hope she loses at WrestleForce…
Ally: What? Why?
Christy: Because right now? That’s the best thing that can happen to her.
Ally: Maybe you’re right…
Christy and Ally sit in silence, scared and concerned for Julianna and unsure if she’s going to find her way through the darkness she finds herself shrouded in.
