Nerd Paladin, Level Up!
File 016: Hope | 希望
“The last twenty-four hours have been abysmal.”
Sitting on a wooden bench with a mirror behind her, Jessica Sears stares blankly towards the activities of the fitness center inside of the Club Quarters Hotel in Boston. Hotel guests are burning the calories and fat away while she simply lies in wait, a pink pair of wireless headphones resting around her neck. Her purple sporty top is complemented by a pair of black yoga pants and purple and white running shoes. Her usually flowing long blonde hair is tied back in a simple braid.
“There were a few exceptions. On Issue 34 of Unleashed, I defeated Timothy Hunt and tied the series to one-and-one, Stacy Jones bested Arabella Madison in wrestling, Asmodeus and Reya Serra had a great bout, Aerynn Donnelly and Ashley Kenyon had an amazing match, and Cali-Kate rejoined the Resistance under the colors of the Lantern Corps… But beyond that? Absolutely abysmal.
In the lore of Dungeons and Dragons, paladins have an ability called ‘Divine Sense’. With it, paladins can sense great evil and powerful good, detecting the undead, fiends, and celestials within sixty feet of ourselves. Well… last night, my Divine Sense was overwhelmed. For the last three consecutive shows, including the last Dissension, I’ve noticed the flickering of lights wherever I go and it’s no coincidence. Something was terribly wrong. But before I could figure out what was wrong, just when we, the Resistance, had the upper hand against the Children of Nephilim… a traitorous aura emerges.
Cronos utterly destroyed us. Not even mein Liebe Dean stood a chance against that behemoth of a man. I was the last one awake, seeing everyone suffer the way they have…
My hope was fragile.”
She shakes her head slowly, closes her eyes, and takes a deep breath.
“Notice… I said ‘a traitorous aura’. Cronos wasn’t the only traitor to surface, oh no. Sometime after Unleashed, Dean and I flew from New York City to Boston to see the NGW Tag Trials. Despite our pain, we wanted to show our support for Adam and Remi of Awkwardly Awesome. After a hard-fought battle, Devastation eliminated them.
That was when Remi revealed himself to be a turncoat. He betrayed Adam, a friend who’s near and dear to my heart, someone whom Remi considered an older brother, and he did it in a way that shook the core of not only New Generation Wrestling, but West Coast Genesis as well.”
Reflecting on these incidents causes Jessica to absently yet harshly bite down on her lower lip. She only seems to notice how hard she’s biting when she finally breaks the skin and draws a little blood, the taste of iron seeping into her mouth. Immediately she releases her lower lip and wipes the excess blood with the back of her right hand, staring at the crimson smear.
“I don’t have to tell you how angry I am… it’s clear in my body language. I have been restless. Right when the damage was done and Adam was taken to the back, I tried desperately to find him. I called him twice while I was on the run. My breathing was nearly frantic. My heart was jumping to my throat. He was nowhere to be found. Not even my best friend and artistic tech sis could locate him. When Dean caught up to me, I just…”
Jessica is visibly shaking. Upon closer inspection, there are tears welling up in her soft blue eyes. She shakes her head, but she doesn’t bother with wiping the tears away.
“There was a fan sighting of him walking into the Logan International Airport and Adrien’s American Express credit card was used to purchase a red-eye to Portland, Oregon. A rental car would be waiting for him once he landed. Adam has a Master’s in Telecommunication. He knows how to isolate himself from the rest of the world, but Tasmin, Eddie, and I believed that he was going to drive home…
...and yet here I am, helpless to do anything for him because tonight, I have to face a former NGW Five Lakes Champion, Tee Voland… and then tomorrow night, I have to defend my Spirit and Pride X Championship in Albany in the Ultimate X for the show’s grand finale.”
She sighs and lowers her head for a moment.
“Helplessness… I swore I would never experience this again. Four years ago, I watched as Rosalyn Darling-- her surname at the time-- and Les Grisham were utterly crushed by Alexander Crowe in the Knoxville Wrestling Institute. That was when I finally decided… I wanted to be strong. Powerful. I wanted to protect my family and friends the way they have always protected me. I wanted to be the defender of the pure and innocent. I was sick and tired of being weak, powerless, defenseless…”
Slowly, she raises her head to stare straight at the camera, her eyes shimmering in the light.
“This feeling of helplessness… no matter how overwhelming it is, there is one thing it cannot shatter. Hope.
Hope is what makes my heart beat.
Hope is where all things are possible.
Hope brings forth the brightest days in the blackest nights.
Hope grants me the advantage to roll the Natural 20 I need to Divine Smite my fiercest enemies.
Tee is a former NGW Five Lakes Champion. She’s a tough woman, fierce and merciless. However, I am a former IPW Heavyweight Champion. I was the one who ended Jacob Daniels’ winning streak and dethroned him. No one else in the company can say they accomplished that. Only I can. That was over two years ago in April. Since then, I have improved by leaps and bounds. With one medical exception, I have never stopped wrestling. I’ve continued to hone my craft in a profession that I have grown to love more than gaming.
Where has Tee Voland been in the last two years?
What has she been doing with her life?
Does she even realize that she’s facing the Paladin of Vengeance tonight?”
There’s a spark in her eyes as she glares into the camera before she raises her wireless headphones and sets them over her ears.
“With everything that’s happened in the last twenty-four hours… I am about to show the world exactly why I will be a champion in the continuity of this company again.
It’s only a matter of time.
Level up or shut up, Tee Voland. Game on.”
She turns towards her Nokia 6 sitting next to her on the bench. Lighting up the screen and unlocking it with a swift insertion of her passcode, she shuffles the current playlist and rises to her feet. As she takes her phone with her, the current song is displayed on the screen.
