“And, I think that’s everyone. Hey, everyone. Wow...maybe I should get my microphone out the music room…”
Adrien Cochrane speaks to a gathering of a lot of his close friends. He stands on the top step of his patio as he looks down at the faces in front of him. A simple yet elegant black dress adorns his beloved girlfriend Everalda Sears-Theron with a pair of sunflower platform sandals. Dancing not too far in his blue walker is her son, Klaus. He’s intrigued by everyone’s presence, his green eyes shimmering bright. Jazmyn Rain is dressed in a neon green-colored activewear set with her hair tied back in a ponytail. Jessica Sears stands by the front in a Guardians of the Galaxy black graphic tee, a loose-flowing purple skirt, and a pair of Deadpool Vans. Eddie Walker is hanging out in the background, relaxing in one of the pool chairs by Adrien’s pool, his sunglasses on, wearing his octopus t-shirt and a pair of shorts. Josh Goldstein was in his predictable attire of a Van Halen t-shirt, torn jeans, and his signature custom ‘Jew Blazer’ sneakers a fan made for him. Jaime Alejandro is wearing his gag tank top with “Sun’s Out, Guns Out” and a pair of long surfer’s shorts. His salt and pepper hair is slicked back. Dean Matthews stands beside a fairly large tree leaning with his feet crossed. His arms crossed over his chest, wearing a black tank top, a pair of denim blue jeans, and his signature boots. His hair is pulled back into a ponytail. Adrien takes a deep breath before he begins speaking to everyone present.
Adrien: “So, I’m sure you guys are probably wondering why I’ve invited all of you here.”
Josh: “OKAY I DID IT! I FOUND A QUARTER ON THE GROUND BACKSTAGE AND I JUST TOOK IT WITHOUT SEEING WHO IT BELONGED TO! I’m a criminal! I’m scum! I still have the quarter! See to it that it gets to the right people and please forgive me!”
Josh fumbles in his jacket and takes out a quarter and extends it to Adrien in search of forgiveness. As Klaus’ little hands stretch out towards the shiny quarter, Everalda can’t help but giggle. Adrien simply closes Josh’s hand and pushes his arm back towards his body, shaking his head with a smile on his face. This is when Dean proposes his own response.
Dean: “...No, I don’t feel that way about you, Adrien. Stop trying already, it’s embarrassing.”
Blinking, Jessica looks over her shoulder towards her very large boyfriend and snort giggles.
Adrien: “Ummm...not exactly. Remember that we all came together with one purpose in mind. We had one goal that banded us together to fight alongside one another.”
Jazmyn: “I remember that very well, having been a part of this from the beginning!”
Adrien: “Go on, Jazmyn.”
Jazmyn: “I remember when we first crossed paths and I made a promise that I would be there for you if you ever needed me…”
Jazmyn pauses, feeling a little sentimental.
Jazmyn: “...and I’ve since fulfilled that promise countless times! Members may have changed, but not the spirit of what we vowed to do: eliminate the Destroyers! Which… well… mission accomplished, obviously!”
Adrien gives a weak smile. He glances over all the faces that we looking back up at him. Well, except for Dean who is still taller than Adrien despite the steps.
Adrien: “We did. We accomplished our mission, ladies and gentlemen. Shields and Richards have attacked both of the other two Destroyers. From here on out, they are only individual problems and no longer a problem as a group. The Destroyers are no more.”
Jaime looks over at the rest of the group and nods to them slowly.
Jaime: “I wouldn’t consider them completely done. All the same, like all creatures of habit… They eat their own. Not the first time we’ve seen this, old friend.”
Adrien: “Individually, they weren’t the threat they were when they were together. The group attacks, the constant interfering to make sure they had the upper hand...that era is over.”
Observing the exchange between her mentor, a man who can also be considered her father figure, and her longtime brother-in-arms, Jessica turns to regard everyone.
Jessica: “I still have my own score to settle with Matthew…”
She looks towards Dean, knowing he has his own personal vendetta. After all, her conflict with Shields was what sparked his ire. Pressing her lips together, Jessica breathes through her nose and simply nods.
Jessica: “...and even though I wasn’t here from the beginning, I still feel like I was able to do my part. An avenger in a civil war for the greater good. Matthew, Kayla, and Jaxon will claim that their betrayal of Jack Tillman is what ended the Destroyers, but we, the Guardians, were the catalyst for their self-destruction.”
There’s a quiet moment. Then, perhaps in good timing, Klaus pitches in.
Klaus: “Ba-boom!”
Everyone directs their attention to the toddler who’s well on his way to turning two in early September. He bounces in his chair and his mother smiles with a light heart.
Everalda: “You are very expressive today, my little Star-Lord.”
Jaime: “I remember when Lukas was like that. Now he’s a teenager that’s only less awkward than our dear friend, Adam.”
As Jaime tries to act serious, little Klaus uses his muscular form as a jungle gym. On cue, the large Cuban flexes out his large bicep for the fledgling nerd to use as a monkey bar. The little blonde-haired boy looks up and he reaches towards Jaime’s arm. Knowing her boyfriend trusts this gentle giant, Everalda moves over, lifts Klaus from his bouncy walker, and assists him in grabbing onto Jaime’s arm. Klaus wears a big smile on his face.
Jaime: “Every kid seems to do this. Wait until they find you ‘cute and cuddly’, Dean.”
Dean’s eyes shift to the “gentle giant” and slowly one of his brows lifts skyward.
Dean: “I’m sorry….did you just say ‘Cute and Cuddly’? Me?”
Jessica: “Confirmed.”
Dean’s girlfriend slaps a Cass Baumer trademark on the question and grins. Jessica makes her way over to him, maneuvers behind him, and simply begins to climb up until she’s sitting on his shoulders. Before he protests, she leans down and kisses the top of his head. The whole time she does this, Dean says nothing and just...stays still so she doesn’t hurt herself. But once she’s stable, he looks up and growls.
Dean: “NOT A TREE, WOMAN!!”
With his mother’s guidance, young Klaus has found his way onto Jaime’s back and onto his shoulders. Jaime looks over at Everalda and Adrien.
Jaime: “Seems I’ve been designated as the ‘fun’ uncle.”
Klaus: “Unca J!”
He’s not going to attempt to pronounce a Spanish name when he doesn’t know the inflections just yet. Everalda smiles and giggles.
Jaime: “This part is more important than winning any war. Family. You folks have a family here. That part is something most groups don’t have. Not a lot of groups get that as much as you folks do. And yes, Josh. Even you. You’re the plucky and ballsy little goofy brother. People need that guy. People need a beacon of hope like Jessica. They need a tempered woman like you, Jazmyn. And they do need someone to believe in, Adrien. Dean and I didn’t make it for the war. However, I’m not one to put words into anyone’s mouth. So, I won’t. I am proud of all of you.”
Dean: “I have my own war.”
Dean chimes in and glances up again.
Dean: “Get...off me, woman.”
Jessica: “I thought you liked it when I’m on top of you…”
Adrien: “Guy, guys, guys…”
Adrien realizes he’s lost control of his audience and the innuendo from Jessica was apparently the line he feels being crossed. After all, he had serious intentions with this meeting of everyone. He tries waving his arms in the air to try to regain everyone’s attention.
Adrien: “Jaime is half-right. The bonds we have created throughout this process has been invaluable. I consider every single one of you my friends. Even you, Dean.”
As he hears the words, Dean’s left brow lifts upwards and his head canted, almost like a curious animal but he says nothing.
Adrien: “And that will never change. Never. But I do think we have reached a point where NGW…”
Cochrane pauses for a moment. This was a hard thing for him to say. The fact that this stable has been with him since the cage match against Matthew Shields...albeit with a different line-up than it was back then...to continue his sentence was difficult. It was almost like there was a frog in his throat.
Adrien: “Where NGW no longer requires the Guardians…”
Jazmyn reacts with a slight cringe, almost as if she expected it. She sighs, knowing that this moment was likely inevitable at some point, but she’s got the composure to respond.
Jazmyn: “I had a gut feeling you were going to say that…”
Jazmyn sighs, pouting some.
Jazmyn: “We did what we set out to do. But… I’ve had such an amazing experience with you guys and it’s going to be sad knowing that it’s going to be coming to an end. You’re right, NGW no longer needs the Guardians. But… what now?”
Jaime keeps the little one balanced on his shoulders. As Jazmyn contemplates their future, he has a thought.
Jaime: “It doesn’t mean you stop talking to each other. The Destroyers did what they did to Jack. But I know the kid well enough… Chris Constantine will sink his claws into NGW soon enough to get his hands on the Richards Family, and that means all Richards. But, that time isn’t now, folks. You have to go back to life before the Guardians, so to speak. A life where you’re not defending the faith. However, be aware you have the marks.”
Everyone looks at him for a moment.
Jaime: “There’s some out there who will target you because you did cause the fissure in the Destroyers. That mere fissure caused their destruction. There are always people who want to make a name for themselves. Such as Julianna DiMaria. Don’t let that deter you. I’m used to having a giant target on my back. Adrien is used to that target on his back. You all have to get used to that fact. Besides, Jessica. Wasn’t that lesson one, day one for us?”
The small yet toned German nerd chuckles softly, clearly remembering her very first training session with the Strong Style Saint.
Jessica: “That was… four years ago, actually. I can’t believe it’s been four years. The shy little pro gamer whose only defense was swinging a bag full of textbooks. Two years later, she became the first person to defeat the undefeated Jacob Daniels and become the IPW Heavyweight Champion at age twenty. Then almost two years after that, she bested Andre Holmes to become the SAP X Champion of love and justice.”
A championship she’s going to defend in her first-ever Ultimate X Match on SAP’s “Send Nudes” grand finale show. She gently places her arms around Dean, still seated on his shoulders, and she breathes slowly.
Jessica: “...The Guardians… of the Galaxy… maybe going their separate ways, but you have to consider the possibility that new threats may arise in the future. There may be something worse than the Destroyers. If… or perhaps when the time comes, we will do what the Avengers do. We will assemble when we are needed.”
She rests her chin atop of Dean’s head and sighs.
Jessica: “And you know where to find me. On top of a Tree Ent, wielding the Captain America shield, and channeling divinities like every good paladin does.”
Dean: “...Still not a tree, woman!”
Adrien: “Jessica is right though. If the time comes, Jazmyn, Joshua, Jessica...maybe even you two late to the party…”
Adrien glances at Jaime and Dean. From atop of Jaime’s shoulders, Klaus smiles.
Adrien: “There’s nothing stopping us from reuniting if the time comes. And it very well might. Who knows, right? But for the time being…”
Adrien turns to Jazmyn Rain, who is feeling a little bit better about the situation at hand knowing that this isn’t truly the end of the ‘family’.
Adrien: “You can focus on being the best damn NGW Five Lakes Champion in the history of the company. The Guardian Angel or whatever new thing you plan on coming up with...you will always be the one who inspired the name of our team to begin with. You’ve been with me since the beginning. And I can’t thank you enough. Be the best Five Lakes Champion you can be.”
Jazmyn: “No, honestly, I’m the one that can’t thank you enough. After all, before NGW we were complete strangers to one another. You being there for me like you’ve been during this rough week further solidifies that and going forward, I know everything is going to look up, ‘Guardian Angel’ or not. In any event, come hell or high water, I’m going to make history with my Five Lakes Championship! I won’t just be the best Five Lakes Champion I can be, I’m going to be the best one this company will ever have… and I have no shame in saying that!”
The Dropkick King now turns to Joshua Goldstein, patting him on the shoulder. Joshua is dressed like a penguin for some reason. However, upon closer examination, everyone in the room realizes he is, in fact, just a penguin. Has their friend been a penguin this whole time? Yes. The concept of Joshua Goldstein is a mass-hallucination brought on by some tainted Listerine breath strips that were shared by the entire roster. They only briefly perceive him as a penguin before the hallucination takes hold again and they forgot they ever saw it and it’s just their friend Josh. It likely never happened at all. OR DID IT? Josh smiles at his friends.
Adrien: “We can return you to the team we loaned you from. You, Kaylee, and Ronnie are going to be great NGW Tag Team Champions. You’re going to represent the titles well with your wife and best friend. You’ve proven that you can win as a singles wrestler, you can win with the Radicalliance and now you’ve proven you can win with three other people, and you will always have that impressive run in the final battle. Anyone who doubts you because of your size now is a proven moron who doesn’t know the size of that heart.”
Josh: “It means a lot to me to have been a part of this… I came to Adrien knowing that something had to be done about the Destroyers but I never anticipated gaining a new family. You all came to Chanukah. Jessica, you came to my wedding despite your issues with my wife. I can leave this patio and smile knowing that this isn’t a goodbye. I am honor-bound to you all. Also, I’m not a penguin.”
Adrien chuckles a bit after the penguin comment. Just the kind of thing Joshua Goldstein would say to try to lighten a very emotional moment to showcase that heart of gold. Now Adrien turns to Jessica Sears. She looks back to her brother-in-arms and presses her lips together, a look of hope in her eyes.
Adrien: “You’re going to get another opportunity at the Young Lions Championship. I know you will and you’re not going to let that opportunity slip from your grasp. It was bad enough it happened the first time, but I know it will only motivate you to drive you, even more, to finally capture it. And it will make the victory all that much sweeter.”
Jessica nods, raises her hands, and cracks her knuckles. The first round with Damon Graves was tarnished by their common enemy, Matthew Shields. She believes in order to get a fair rematch, not only does she need to earn it, but she needs to settle the score with the Knightmare King once and for all. She looks over when her mentor and father figure speaks up.
Jaime: “You have your own twenty-five pounds of metal to deal with. The truth is ugly, but the battle with Johnny Maverick will get ugly when he realizes you’re now after his belt, Adrien. The belt is like the one ring, and he’s becoming Gollum.”
Tilting her head, Everalda contemplates Jaime's words. She's been quiet for most of the conversation. It was one for the Guardians to focus on, and she wasn't a Guardian. She wasn't even a wrestler. Still, reaching this point she takes a deep breath.
Everalda: “I wouldn't say Mr. Maverick is Gollum. I'd say Deadpool, but that's not the focal part of this conversation…”
She approaches Adrien and gently takes his hands in hers.
Everalda: “You have always placed the needs of others first before your own. When you could have pursued the NGW Championship several months ago, you chose to focus on stopping the Destroyers. Now that their empire has fallen, it's time for you to build your own. An empire of honor and respect. Some say it is hardest to face your friends in a challenge. I think it pushes you beyond your limits because you want to show one another the best of your abilities. Give Johnny everything you've got, mein Herz.”
With a precious smile, Everalda leans in and kisses Adrien lovingly. Jessica picks up on that particular German phrase. Mein Herz; my heart. That's what their father used to call her out of love and affection. Her eyes shimmer softly as she rests her head on top of Dean's and sighs. Adrien looks down at everyone once more. The grin on his face was wide and genuine.
Adrien: “I love you guys. Each and every single one of you. I’m always going to be here if any of you need anything. The gate to my house is open to all of you. The fight that we fought together and battles we overcame may be temporary...but our friendships are forever. So let us celebrate this victory one last time. I’ll start getting some food ready for us to enjoy this milestone!”
With a simple clap of his hands, "An Honest Mistake" by the Bravery began playing on Adrien’s outdoor speakers. As everyone begins to conversate with one another, Adrien leans over to Everalda’s ear.
Adrien: “I’ll be right back. Let me know if the guests need anything.”
Josh: “Hey! Anyone wanna go get some delicious krill? I mean….Pizza? NOT A PENGUIN.”
Cochrane opens the back door to his home and walks through his gym, living room and then finally the kitchen. It was at this moment that he doesn’t open the refrigerator, but instead his phone. He taps the screen a few times before placing the phone to his ear.
Adrien: “El Leòn Azul...it’s Adrien. I know you’re probably wondering how I got your number but…”
Azul: “Si?”
He was confused as to how Adrien got his number.
Adrien: “I know it’s you. The...moves you used gave you away. Don’t worry, I am keeping that information to myself.”
There is a slight pause until Azul responds but in plain English.
Azul: “Adrien… I…. I’m-”
Adrien: “Don’t worry about it. I’m just glad you’re okay. I wanted to tell you something though…”
Azul: “Yeah?”
He was taken back and hoping not to alienate Adrien due to his history.
Adrien: “The mission is complete. And I just wanted to give you a wholehearted thank you for the contributions you made. Whether you realize this or not, it couldn’t have been done without you.”
Azul: “I don’t think that I had anything to do with-”
He pauses and exhales.
Azul: “It was you, Adrien. It was always your lead.”
Adrien: “Like I said, whether you realize it or not, you were vital to the success of the Guardians. Even if you weren’t able to help in the end. And I just wanted to make sure I gave you the proper appreciation for what you did do.”
Azul: “You are talking like I am dead… I am going nowhere, Adrien. And I am sure you know that.”
Adrien: “No. You’re not…”
Adrien is the one who pauses this time. He takes a deep breath before updating Azul.
Adrien: “I just dissolved...disbanded...split up, whatever word you want to use...the Guardians are no more. It’s over...”
Azul: “You did well. And I am glad that what happened… happened.”
He thinks it over for a moment.
Azul: “My eternal friends.”
He laughs. Adrien laughs as well.
Adrien: “Eternal friend.”

The faces all around me
They don't smile they just crack
Waiting for our ship to come
But our ships not coming back
We do our time like pennies in a jar
What are we saving for?
What are we saving for?
There's a smell of stale fear
That's reeking from our skins.
The drinking never stops because
The drinks absolve our sins
We sit and grow our roots into the floor
But what are we waiting for?
But what are we waiting for?

So give me something to believe
Cause I am living just to breathe
And I need something more
To keep on breathing for
So give me something to believe
Something's always coming
You can hear it in the ground
It swells into the air
With the rising
Rising sound
And never comes but shakes the boards
And rattles all the doors
What are we waiting for
