“Reality: Part One”
Date: June 12, 2018
Jazmyn’s 34th birthday the day before was a cause for celebration, for sure. But it was also a 24-hour bandage of the emotional pain that the Five Lakes and GCW Global Champion has been feeling since Sunday night in Columbus. Losing to NGW Champion Johnny Maverick in the main event would be cause for being down in the dumps enough… but tapping out? Knowing that in the moment, she couldn’t take it anymore and she had no other choice? It’s that very moment that leaves the Charlotte native spiritually bruised. She knows in her heart, that in the grand scheme of things, living to fight another day and getting to WrestleForce in one piece was the right thing. But that doesn’t stop her from feeling downtrodden as she walks through the lobby of a Toronto hotel.
GCW is on deck for her, with a Global Championship defense coming up just six days after a loss Jazmyn would call “soul crushing”. Typically, Jazmyn takes what she can get from the experience and moves forward… and that’s clearly still going to be the case, being the champion she is. Only… this one… she knows it’s going to take a little more time than usual. Her expression is that of conflict as she walks toward the elevators and presses the “up” button to go to her hotel room. She sighs, pausing in wait for an elevator to come down. In the moment, she can’t push her doubts out of her head. Feeling like she let so many people down is the worst feeling for her and that’s what she’s experiencing. The elevator opens and Jazmyn walks in, but someone else walks in with her. She’s not looking at their face as she reaches for the “12” button, but the person next to her beat her to it. Jazmyn looks down on the floor, sighing, head hanging, soaking in the agony of her loss on Sunday.
Voice: Tough loss?
The elevator closes and begins to move up. Jazmyn looks up and sees Myra Lynwood, her former friend and mentor in PRW. Considering all the history between them, particularly Myra stealing a former boyfriend from her and at one point, doing everything she could to drive Jazmyn out of wrestling, Myra is the last person Jazmyn wants to see in the state of mind that she’s in.
Jazmyn: I don’t want to talk about it.
Myra: Doesn’t feel good when you’re on the other side of a submission, does it? Now you know how I felt when you did the same thing to me last year.
Jazmyn: So are you just going to rub it in and revel in it?
Myra: No, I’m going to tell you to get the fuck over yourself.
Jazmyn’s eyes widen in surprise.
Myra: What’s the plan, Jaz? You’re going to mope and cry some, then grow from this, then get right back on the horse on Saturday and retain your title, re-inspiring the people that you “let down”, and then you’ll feel amazing getting one over on Apocalypse? And then what are you going to do after that? Destroy Apocalypse?
Jazmyn: Something like that…
Myra laughs as the elevator continues to move up to the 12th floor.
Myra: And then what? Take care of the evil after that? And the evil after THAT? And the evil after THAT??? All while INSPIRING PEOPLE and FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT?
Jazmyn: It’s what I do… I defeat those evils!
Myra: You’re living in a dream world…
Jazmyn: Excuse me?
There’s a brief pause in their conversation as the elevator reaches the 12th floor. It opens and the two of them walk out.
Myra: I’ll see you later, Jazmyn.
Myra begins to walk away, but Jazmyn isn’t having it.
Jazmyn: What do you mean I’m living in a dream world? What the fuck are you talking about?
Myra: You don’t have the courage, Jaz! I suggest you forget about it.
Jazmyn: No, you are going to tell me what you mean!
Myra completely ignores her as she walks to her room. Jazmyn follows her all the way as Myra opens the door and walks in, before turning around and noticing Jazmyn.
Myra: You’re not ready to hear the truth.
Jazmyn: If the truth helps me be better… so be it!!!
Myra: Fine… come in! But don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Jazmyn angrily walks in and Myra shuts the door behind her.
Myra: You know what your problem is? You’ve got two championships, you’re at the pinnacle of your career and you think that gives you an aura of invincibility! You thought “Hey, let me fight this match and win or lose, I’ll take something out of it”, right? And then you tapped out… and now you can’t accept the fact that Jazmyn Rain is HUMAN after all! You act like nobody can bring you back down to earth, but now that someone HAS… suddenly… you act like it’s the end of the world. Face reality, princess! You’re no better than anyone else! Do you think that the people give a DAMN about you? Oh maybe some do, but here’s the bitch: you’re only getting older… and someday, there’s going to be someone just like you ready to take your place. The people? They’re going to forget about you and gravitate toward what’s new!
Jazmyn: YOU WOULDN’T KNOW!!!!
Jazmyn’s temper suddenly bolts out of control!
Jazmyn: You’re just trying to fill my head with bullshit, Myra!
Myra: Am I? You’re in DENIAL! I’m telling you EVERYTHING that NOBODY in your life has the BALLS to tell you! You live in this dream world because you’re one of the best wrestlers in the world… nobody can deny you that… and you surround yourself with a coddling father, a pussy-whipped boyfriend, and those bastard friends of yours… all of whom do nothing but tell you EVERYTHING you want to hear, but are selfish bastards because they hold back! When have I EVER held back on you? Nobody asked for a Guardian Angel, Jazmyn! “My destiny is to inspire people”.... People who what? Don’t give a damn? People that in a few years will STOP giving a damn?
And I’D know because seven years ago, I WAS you… remember? I was the one going out there and “protecting the sanctity of wrestling”! And as soon as I lose the PRW World Championship to Victoria… they all worshiped her as their new queen! You’re replaceable, princess, and it’s about high time you realized that! You’re that fucking high and mighty on yourself, you think that you’re something beyond human? DREAM WORLD! You’ve never thought that any of your friends could stab you in the back? You don’t worry about Derek cheating on you? Or your father dying?
You need to wake the fuck up and stop living in this dream world, PERIOD!!!
Jazmyn stands there shocked by what she’s hearing, deep in thought.
Jazmyn (thinking): I want to tune this out… coming from MYRA of all people… but… I can’t help to think that she’s right.
Myra: You’ll never successfully protect wrestling from evil… because evil… will always be there! In all honesty? All you’ve ever really accomplished these last two years? Big wins over some big names in this sport and a few championships! This is a competitive sport Jazmyn… not a battle of good versus evil.
Jazmyn: I… I…
Myra: The truth is sinking in… isn’t it! In the grand scheme, championships and matches are all you’ll ever win! You want to know where the real evil lies in this business? It’s all right here…
Myra reaches into her coat pocket and pulls her her iPhone, handing it to Jazmyn who eagerly takes it. Jazmyn looks at the screen and her eyes glisten with confusion.
Jazmyn: What???
Jazmyn swipes up, shocked and confused as she’s seeing pictures from her own birthday party last night that her GCW friends threw for her.
Jazmyn: These are just pictures of my birthday party!
Myra: The real evil… it lies in every… single… one of us… even YOU, princess. This sport will ALWAYS be competitive! That BFF that always stands beside you? If they want the same thing you do… they will stab you in the back! It’s every wrestler for themselves! We’re ALL selfish animals at the end of the day. THAT… is REALITY!
It’s not “saving the world from evil”.
It’s not “inspiring the people and being loved by everyone”.
That’s BULLSHIT… and you’re egotistical as FUCK for living in that dream world for so long!
You’re HUMAN! You COMPETE just like every wrestler in the world! And if you were in a situation where you had to stab someone in the back to get something you wanted, you’d do it because NOBODY is above that… not even you! Get over yourself. You’re no angel. You’re no messenger of God. You’re a stupid little Southern girl that is damn good at what she does between those ropes, strong… yes… but STUPID! This isn’t about “saving the world” for you… it’s about being the best… it’s about being great… and don’t you dare deny yourself that truth any longer.
Jazmyn is frozen in shock as Myra’s phone slips out of her hand. Myra rolls her eyes, annoyed, as she picks up her phone and puts it down on a counter in front of a mirror.
Jazmyn: ...you’re right…
Myra: Hmm?
Jazmyn: I’m no angel… I thought I was doing good for the world… but…
Jazmyn takes a pause as a tear strolls down her face.
Jazmyn: How could I when I’ve been living in a dream world being something I’m not? I’m just your typical Southern girl with a big heart, who’s strong, who’s overcome so many obstacles to get to where she is today… who’s one of the best at what she does. I’m human… we all are… and I made a mistake thinking I was bigger than what I actually am…
Jazmyn wipes away a tear…
Jazmyn: I think it’s about time Wonder Woman finally gives way to Diana Prince. I don’t need to be a “Guardian Angel”... I just need to be that “typical Southern girl”... the one that… honestly? I always felt like there was something wrong with but… turns out all that was “wrong” with her was the mistakes she’d made in her life.
Myra turns to Jazmyn.
Myra: Welcome back to reality, Jazmyn. Henceforth ends the lesson.
Jazmyn turns around and walks toward the door.
Myra: Oh… and Jaz?
Jazmyn pauses.
Myra: Submitting to Maverick doesn’t make you weak. It makes you just like every other wrestler in the world that would have done the same in your situation.
Jazmyn: Thanks…
Jazmyn opens the door and leaves Myra’s hotel room. Walking down the hallway, she hears some whispers going on as she sees an open door.
Familiar Voice: Yeah… it’s okay… Jazmyn’s kind of going through a hard time right now though…
Jazmyn: Camryn?
Jazmyn walks toward the door and takes a peak inside and she spots her agent, and her best friend from her college days, talking on the phone with her back toward the entrance. Jazmyn snaps back toward the wall and leans against it, eavesdropping on Camryn’s conversation.
Camryn (on the phone): It’s like this after EVERY pratfall… my GOD… it’s annoying! But it’s Jazmyn, you know? She’s ALWAYS been a melodramatic, drama queen! It’s like… BITCH… you’re a double champion… GET OVER YOURSELF… you know? But… she’s a money maker, what can I say? She pays me well and her book is going to be a HUGE sell… which means… more money in MY pocket!
Jazmyn’s eyes widen in shock at this point…
Camryn (on the phone): And that’s the only reason why I even wanted to reunite with the dumb bitch anyway, you know?
Jazmyn (whispering): ...what???
Camryn (on the phone): Jazmyn Rain is not my friend anymore, she hasn’t been in years… she’s my cash cow… that’s all she is! That’s REALITY!
Jazmyn: ...oh my god…
Jazmyn quickly bolts from Camryn’s hotel room to step across the hallway and two doors down to open her door and walk in, slamming the door behind her along the way and sitting on her bed.
Jazmyn: WHY!?!?!?!?!?! How can she do this to me?!?!?!
Jazmyn turns and lies down, burying her face in her pillow, crying her eyes out upon the reality of not just learning the truth Myra gave her… but also the reality that one of her long-time best friends had been stabbing her in the back the whole time…
