“Rooted In Strength”
Date: June 10, 2018
On the day of Dissension, and on the eve of her 34th birthday, NGW Five Lakes Champion and GCW Global Champion Jazmyn Rain is looking in the mirror as she stands in her hotel room. It’s not just a physical reflection that the Charlotte native is looking it, it’s an emotional, retrospective reflection also. With her birthday being tomorrow, and with recent events like becoming a three-time Global Champion and the Guardians winning the war against the Destroyers, Jazmyn reflects on every bit of her journey as she looks at her two championships lying on the counter in front of her. Her match with Johnny Maverick is pulsating through her conscience. She knows the odds she faces. She knows he had some nasty things that he said during his promo, some of them even pertaining to her. If she’s bothered by any of it, her body language isn’t showing it. The camera is rolling behind her as tomorrow’s birthday girl expresses her thoughts while looking in the mirror…
Jazmyn Rain: They don’t think you can beat Johnny Maverick tomorrow…
Jazmyn holds a slight look of anger in her eyes as it’s obvious that she’s talking to herself in the mirror.
Jazmyn Rain: Johnny Maverick had some harsh things to say about you. In another time in your career, you’d be trying to counter what he said with anger and talking about how you’ll prove him wrong and how you don’t need his approval. But you’re not that Jazmyn anymore… you’re rooted in strength… yet you don’t know HOW that strength is rooted. Yes, Adrien, Jessica and Joshua think you can beat him. But do you? Of course you do! You’re Jazmyn Rain! Like you once said to an old friend… what other people say about you doesn’t matter… the only thing that does matter is how you feel about yourself! And you know, Johnny’s right… you do care so much about how other people perceive you! And yes, it’s a flaw that can be fatal at times. But Jazmyn… it’s a flaw that you can not only fix… but it’s a flaw that developed with no fault of your own!
Jazmyn looks down at a picture between her two championships… which happens to be dated “June 11, 1984”. Her father is in the picture, lovingly holding her as a newborn while her mother is asleep on the hospital bed… which eerily enough, is a direct reflection of the relationship with her biological parents. Jazmyn looks back at the mirror and talks to herself.
Jazmyn Rain: Thirty-four years ago tomorrow, you were born to Catalina and Ricardo Cabrera. Dad loved you with all his heart, but “mother”...
Jazmyn pauses, sighing as she reflects on her relationship with her biological mother.
Jazmyn Rain: Catalina couldn’t give two fudge bars about you! She beat you down… verbally… not physically thankfully… when you were growing up. She told you that you ruined her life. No matter how hard you tried, you never gained her pure approval and as much as I hate to say that you never will, it was the biggest obstacle you ever had to overcome. “If my mother doesn’t approve of me, who will?” you would ask yourself. But you proved her wrong!
Through strength, through perseverance, and heck, even death, you proved her wrong!
Remember when you first began training, so “old” in your life and when everyone wanted to laugh you out of wrestling school because they didn’t think you could make it?
You did!
And you proved them wrong! You made it in the mainstream business against all the odds in the world and you began to realize a dream that you never would have been able to achieve without developing that strength that slowly grew as the years came by! Myra Lynwood… the woman that trained you for the mainstream business… wanted to hold you down but karma came back to haunt her didn’t she? Remember when you first started being a singles performer in PRW and you were laughed out of the locker room by so many ignorant idiots that thought that you would never amount to being anything beyond Myra’s tag team partner? Do you remember how many times you cried, because you were scared and doubted yourself and believed them all? It was a trying time for you… I know… but you stepped into the ring against PRW’s Intercontinental Champion in a non-title match… and you WON! The world was shocked, but your best potential was not because something so monumental was always within you! And then… when you got your first singles title shot… you became the PRW Intercontinental Champion!
You finally made it!
Jazmyn takes a pause as she briefly reflects on the moment she won her very first singles championship and how much she meant to her. As much as she wants to crack a smile, she can’t… because she knows the hardest part of her journey is on the horizon.
Jazmyn Rain: But you fell… hard! The pressure got to you when you were unable to take the next step and be a world champion in PRW. Drugs… losing your mind… losing your JOB… your CAREER… your HAIR…
Jazmyn’s eyes widen in a sudden pause, remembering the trauma of her rock bottom moment when she shaved her head in a drug-induced self-rampage that led her to being held in a mental health and drug treatment facility for six months. She nervously strokes her hair, obviously hoping within herself that she never loses it again.
Jazmyn Rain: And then you survived rock bottom… and you said you wanted to wrestle again… and they laughed… and they chortled… and wrestling REJECTED YOU because they thought you were a lost cause. GCW took a chance! You hit the ground running, you won your first Global Championship… and then it got robbed from you! Your big moment… the one that would establish you as the real deal… as an incredible champion… GONE!
Jazmyn claws the counter with some anger, taking a deep breath before continuing.
Jazmyn Rain: And the demons laughed at you and tried to beat you while you were down… and then you struggled and survived, trying to find your purpose in this business… this life… all while trying to rebuild your strength to be a champion your critics said you could never be…
...and then you died…
Jazmyn shuts her eyes and pauses some more, not only reflecting on the moment she died a three-minute clinical death, but FEELING that moment, clutching her chest around the area of her heart, before she takes a deep breath and opens her eyes again as if she was symbolizing a rebirth of sorts…
Jazmyn Rain: ...and the Guardian Angel was born… and those demons? Those same ones that laughed at you and rejected you? You brought them down… one by one...until you finally became Global Champion again! When you first arrived in NGW… so many rejected you too.
Rejection…
That seems to be the big bad, right?
Your birth mother… many of your peers… growing up in school… GCW… Jack Tillman, Chris Constantine, Matt Shields… your worst wrestling enemies…
Rejection has followed you your entire life!
Rejection is something that has swallowed you whole.
Rejection is something you have allowed to control your belief in yourself and to stymie the strength within you!
You know what?
That ends!
Because you need to hear this… it’s never going to go away! There will never be a perfect world where everyone loves you and accepts you for who you are! A utopia where you’re revered and admired… it’s never going to happen! You’re living too much in a dream world, Jazmyn… where everyone is inspired by you… but the truth is… you can’t inspire everyone because in the grand scheme of things, not everyone is going to appreciate you! You can do so much for someone, but anyone can still reject you no matter how much you do for them.
Johnny doesn’t accept you. You do realize that right?
So why inspire?
What’s the point if not everyone will accept you?
What’s the point of fighting the good fight when there’s always going to be evil? What’s the point of trying to inspire when you know deep down that you’ll never be universally liked or accepted, when there’s always going to be one person that is going to doubt you, deny you, reject you, discard you? What’s the point of trying to be a winner and a champion knowing that you could very well feel like a loser and an unworthy holder of the Five Lakes Championship next time out?
In the grand scheme of things, what we do doesn’t matter does it? No… what matters is what we do today… in the moment, because at the end of the day, the people that you DO inspire, the people that DO accept you, and love you… THAT is what matters! Fighting the good fight and grinding the gears of evil… even if it’s for a moment… THAT’S what matters! Inspiring someone… even in defeat… THAT is what matters!
It’s not being knocked down in defeat that matters… it’s getting up and fighting back!
It’s not being rejected that matters… it’s loving back the people that love you!
Your strength… is what matters…
Jazmyn reaches out to touch the mirror and in essence, her reflection.
Jazmyn Rain: And through all of the challenges and obstacles, you’ve built that strength! Win or lose, you’re a strong, beautiful, wonderful champion, inspiring many, loved by many… and Johnny Maverick can’t take that away from you. He won’t. His words aren’t going to change that because his… words… don’t… matter!
YOU do...because throughout the years... YOU have proven it to yourself!!!
Don’t let anyone say otherwise!
I love you… and you’re the greatest champion you could possibly be… through EVERYTHING you’ve overcome…
Jazmyn’s eyes glisten some as she picks up both of her championships and slings them across her shoulders.
Jazmyn Rain: Fight this match against Maverick and show him that… fight with love for yourself… not with hate for his words. Because these are the battles… win or lose… that make you the champion you’ve always been… and what you’re destined to be someday!
Taking one last breath, Jazmyn turns around and shuts off the camera, before leaving her hotel room, rooted in the strength that she, as a champion in and out of the ring, has built herself up to be through ALL the obstacles she’s overcome!
