She laughs as she watches him. He grabs his keys and heads for the door, opening it. He stops as he peeks his head back into the room.
Avery: So what is the security deposit…
Before he can finish, she throws a shoe in his direction as he laughs his way out of the house. He heads out of the house laughing as he jumps into his truck. He was going to drive into town and pick up some ice cream for his wife. He did his best to be attentive to her, as she was ready to pop any day now. Avery puts on some music as he starts to drive in town. He flips through some of the local country stations as a familiar song comes on; “Fall Into Me’ by Emerson Drive. Avery was 11 years old, but he was already more than in love with Zoe. The song was one that they shared and connected with for years. It was played at their wedding reception as the guests looked on for the high school sweethearts to dance to. Avery turns the song up, and just remembered the good times. Serenity understood how Zoe was always going to have an important part of his life… of his memories; but Serenity was never second fiddle. Zoe helped to make Avery the man that he was, and Serenity was the next part of his life. Avery and Zoe always agreed in God’s plan, and things happened for a reason. In heartbreak and in high points, there was always a reason. A smile and a tear of joy rolled down the face of Miles as he headed off of the dirt road and onto paved door heading into Macon.
I need you to know you can fall into me
That my arms are wide open and will always be
Right here waiting, staying strong
Come and fall into me
I'll follow any road
Anywhere to get to you
I'll open up my soul
If that's what you need me to do
Now baby its your move
All you've got to do
Is believe in love, just believe in us
Now…
Avery looked up, and that same sports car again. He was in his truck and could follow her now. He wanted to know who it was. Any if they were screwing with him. There is no way it could be Zoe, right? He attended her funeral. He saw her body… there. Lifeless. He sped his truck up trying to catch up to her in traffic. The song continued to play as he weaved in and out of traffic. He needed to catch her. For his own good, he needed to know. He looks up ahead and she takes a right, and he takes the right after a rolling stop. Barreling down the road, they drove through a residential neighborhood. She obviously knew that he was behind her. She looked back, and gained some speed. They sped past a few homes, and made a left. The sign read “DEAD END” but she must have not noticed. He was going to get his answer. The song came to an end, and he switched the radio off. The sound of his engine revved as he tried to keep up with the two-seater sports car. As she approached the end of the street, he pulled up in a way that she had to address him. Sitting there at the end of the street, he looks down into her car as his truck towered over it. He saw her head tap the steering wheel once… twice… three times…. And finally she sticks her head out of the window to look up at him.
Her: Hello, Avery.
Avery turned ghost white. She knew him. Who was she? How did she know his name? She could not be Zoe, could she? The same eyes. The same hair. I mean, she was a lot more done up than Zoe ever did. But if Zoe put time and effort into getting all dolled up, this could be Zoe for all he knew.
Avery: You… you know me?
Her: Of course, Avery. I know you saw me. I just… I didn’t know how to talk to you.
Avery: Are you… Is that you….
Before he could finish, she cuts him off.
Her: I have a lot of explaining to do. I know. You still live in the old farmhouse? With your new wife… right?
He nods, saying nothing.
Her: I will come and visit you. When I am ready. It is hard. It’s been a hard time. I’ve been gone, and just recently came back. I was hoping to avoid this. But you saw me at the gas station.
Avery: And the airport…
Her: I know…
Avery: And the cemetary…
Her: I am sorry, Ave.
Ave? Only those close to him called him Ave.
Her: I did not know what to say. There? That was not the best time.
Avery: I… I understand
He chokes up.
Her: I will come out and visit you and…
Avery: Serenity. She is pregnant.
He lowers his head.
Her: Good. I am happy for you…
He hears her engine rev.
Her: I will be seeing you soon…
She takes off not saying one more word as he sits alone in his truck, unsure what to think.
