“What’s up, Oakland?!”
The camera’s visual is that of Remi Fontaine, himself, with a huge smile on his face and his black-framed glasses resting over the bridge of his nose.
“It’s not the videos that are new, but the setup. I’ve still got ‘em up on my YouTube. Now they’re also available to watch on Dailymotion. You know, in case YouTube stamps more copyrights on EVERYTHING. Sorry guys, that’s why the Mario Kart 8 videos got taken down. Nintendo’s getting butthurt over their stuff, so… heads up.”
That’s a fair warning. He adjusts the camera so it’s pulled back, but there’s enough space to capture the setting. He’s sitting in the front passenger’s seat of a car that’s making a drive through the city.
“My aunt Xaria’s already at Merritt College, so dad and I are making our way there now.”
“We would’ve been there earlier, but a couple of boys were enjoying their lunch date a little too long.”
Remi sticks his tongue out before he turns his camera towards his father in the driver’s seat. Quentin Fontaine glances over at the camera and chuckles softly.
“I’m surprised Jesse didn’t want to carpool with us.”
“He said he needed to train a little more. I wasn’t gonna stop him. Alicia Hixx isn’t a threat by any means. Hell, the woman can’t even piece together the basics of the English language.”
“Speaking of language…”
There’s an audible groan behind the camera and Quentin continues to focus on his driving. Remi keeps talking behind the camera.
“...Jesse’s yet to win a match in WCG, but I know he’s got it tonight. You don’t need to have the best records to be successful.”
“I’m well aware. You’re the perfect example of this, Signore Long Beach Champion.”
At that, Remi turns the camera around to focus on himself, a huge grin on his face.
“That’s right! And THE NEW West Coast Genesis Long Beach Champion, the Rebel Angel REMI FONTAINE! WOO-HOO!”
He directs the camera down to his lap where the championship belt is resting. The nameplate even has his name on it. Once they reach a red light, Quentin takes a moment to applaud for his son.
“Two weeks later and I’m still overcome with pride and joy for you, Remi. Xaria and I knew you could do it.”
“Thanks, dad! I’m still a little awestruck, myself. This?”
He shakes the camera at the visual of the belt, pure excitement in his own body language.
“Some people think the Long Beach Championship is the ‘low-tier title in WCG’. Well, I’m going to change that. It’s time to elevate the prestige of this title and make it worthwhile. I’m not saying Izzy didn’t make it better. She has the second-longest reign AND the most title defenses. In case you didn’t know, that’s two. Despite her claims that she was belt-sitting for Adam, those were HER accomplishments, not his. She did it on her own. Now I’m going to go beyond the horizon. I want to defend the title as much as possible. If we can get it done on every show, that would be…”
Pause. Beat.
“...awkwardly awesome!”
Quentin can’t help but chuckle on the other side of the camera. Remi has to chime in the name of his and Adam’s tag team. Once the light turns green, the driving continues and so does Remi.
“Take notes, Mr. Devlin Scott, Mrs. Mercedes Blackwell. I, Rémiel Alessandro Fontaine, want to be the next level of fighting champions. I want to make the Long Beach title just as important as the South Bay AND the West Coast titles. Any challenger, any show, any number of opponents, any stipulation, bring ‘em on! Because I’d rather be a champion who defends their championship than cling to it for dear life without a challenger in sight.”
“Well, you have an opportunity to redeem yourself yet again when you face your friend and tag partner, Adam Sanders, tonight.”
Remi firmly nods and presses his lips together.
“That’s true. In the last month or so, not only have I been training with Signore Daniel Daemon, but also Monsieur Adrien Cochrane. He extended a hand to me and I’ve had the opportunity to work with Adam. In between studies, homework, and training, it’s been pretty crazy. Finals are coming up in early June and I’m on this new championship quest. There’s a lot going on… but I think I’ve got Adam’s number. You see, the first match was super close. If I had made a couple better moves, it would’ve been mine to win. I know what I need to do this time. My agility’s going to KICK into a higher gear… get it?”
Now it’s his father’s turn to make an audible groan. Remi just grins.
“I’d like to believe Adam and I are standing on proving grounds. After tonight, we’re en route to the NGW Tag Team Trials in exactly one week. This second match is an opportunity to sharpen up and learn the ins and outs of each other’s styles and moves. The better we know each other, the better we can work together as a team. By the time the first round of the tournament begins, we’ll know where to assist the other and cover any weaknesses that come up. Flawless victory.”
With a confident smile, Remi turns the camera forward as Quentin pulls into the parking garage of Merritt College. His father’s window moves down so he can pay for the day pass. Remi turns the camera back towards himself and nods.
“All we’ve gotta do is find a parking spot and then we’ll be on our way. Adam, you’re my friend, my tag partner, and HECK…”
He emphasizes this so his father clearly picks it up. Quentin just laughs and continues his search.
“...you’re like a big brother to me. That’s why I’m not holding back. You deserve me at my very best and that’s what you’re gonna get. I won’t say you’re gonna ‘hashtag get wrecked’ because that’s kinda rude… but let’s show ‘em what we’ve got. See you soon!”
And cut.
