Austen: Days go by. Weeks. And I am getting more and more hungry. Like a wolf out in the wild. I am looking for that next meal. Jimmy Pagan has done this to me; he has made me go from being the prey to being a predator. The difference between Pagan and myself? I charge a prey head-on and offer them a fair challenge. Pagan attacks in the shadow, like a coward. He talks of leading this life where he is somehow all knowing. I am on a conquest of the Long Beach Division. Two weeks ago at Unscripted, I bested both Shawn Young and JD Ryan. For those that have forgotten, Young was a Long Beach Champion. That is two off of the list. I still need to show what I can do against former champions Adam Sanders and Izzy Roxx. I need to take on the big man, Carter Strong. And then the champion, Remi Fontaine. I am putting the entire division on notice. I’ve fought my ass off and still come back for more. Jimmy Pagan may have got the best of me, but I am not going anywhere. I might get knocked down, but I am resilient enough to come back up.
Austen Blackwell sits on the end of a weight bench. He is wearing a black muscle shirt, black tear away pants, and some white sneakers with black lines and highlights. It is obvious he is in the gym and working out, preparing for his match. He looks like a man with a focus, and far more serious than we are used to seeing him. He is alone, his wife not in sight. A pair of earbuds lay on top of his bag, on the floor.
Austen: This week I face Ares McCullough. A newer face around here, and someone that has not said much in the last two months of being signed to West Coast Genesis. Then again if I lost the last three matches I was in, and only won one of five matches I might have nothing to say as well. I have the feeling that Ares will go the way of the Dodo Bird; here today and gone tomorrow. He feels like yet another “talent” that signs with West Coast Genesis with the hype machine behind him, but he fizzles out for whatever reason. I have seen it far too much, and it is unfortunate that is happens time and time again. The roster seems to be made up of either those that are originals or have been here since the early days and those that are looking for a true shot and disappear quicker than the snap of Thanos’ fingers. People like Danni, Donovan, Tasmin, Melina, Adam, and Izzy and myself have been around for the long haul. Heck, even Jason, Shawn, Iphy, and Sela have stuck around. But so many have come and gone. Rachel Redding, Jess Hardy, Ruby Lance, Cynthia Machado, those 7th Circle dudes, The Messiahs, the Tornado guy, Jack and C.J., and Gabe Griffin. So many names have come and gone from this place, and yet we keep on trucking forward. For me to reach for the stars and win the Long Beach Championship would be just the beginning of my own rise. I want to do what my friends did and accomplish gold. Ruby and Danni have done it with the South Bay, and Donovan with the West Coast. For me? I know the Long Beach title is just the entry point but I do not mind at all.
Austen seems to be spilling out his feelings and thoughts more so than ever. He was an open stream of emotions, ideas, and honesty.
Austen: Whether or not Mercedes is my wife, she is our General Manager and once I have earned that number one contender spot in the Long Beach rankings, I will be making my case known for a title shot. I’ve come up short a few times in the South Bay. I asked to be moved down, and I’ve spent my time building myself back up. I’ve rolled with the punches and make sure to earn my own keep. But it is time that I step up to the plate and swing for the fences. If we never try, we will never know what could be. I am not going to play the What If game. The Long Beach Championship is step one for me. I will win that title, and gain the experience of a champion. I intend on moving back up to the South Bay, and winning that title. Even if it means having to challenge my friend, Danielle, again. I know what it is that I need to do, and I have put my mind to it. I’ve been at this for awhile, and come up short far too many times. My natural progression is to win the Long Beach Championship, move forward onto the South Bay. Ultimately I want to be the face of WCG and win the West Coast Championship.
Austen leans over the edge of the bench and grabs his earbuds and his phone. He swipes on the screen to unlock it as he loads up a workout playlist.
Austen: New Generation Wrestling is the ultimate goal. To be on the big roster with some of the biggest names in the industry. The prestige of the company with names that are forever etched in history and the record books. In time, Austen Blackwell will become a name that will be hung up in the fictional hall of records that I imagine exists. Champion. Competitor. Legend. Hall of Famer. I have high hopes and even bigger dreams. If you do not set high goals, you are underestimating yourself. And I know not to do that to myself.
Austen pops the earbuds into his ear and hits play as he proceeds to start his workout.
