Nerd Paladin, Level Up!
File 013: Valor | 値
The fans are excited for the match to continue as Graves pulls Sears to her feet and kicks her in the stomach before he spin kicks her in the temple. Sears stumbles away and the referee checks on her for a moment. Graves rushes from nowhere and tries to figuratively take Sears’ head off with a discus elbow smash, but Sears gets out of the way and Graves accidentally hits Referee Ed Macintosh!
West: Damon, you idiot!
Barkley: Pure accident, I’m sure of it. This is quite the conundrum and the fans are raving-- ...is that a red balloon…?

A cute Sailor Mercury icon for the mouse appears, hovers over the pause button, and the click of the mouse does the trick. One of the nearby cameras is zoomed in on the red balloon drawing closer to the ring. Rosalyn Fernandes glances up from the office desk where her laptop resides. Her recording video camera offers the viewers an over-the-shoulder look of the scene before them. Rosalyn sees the way her childhood friend Jessica stares at the screen.
No, not the screen, per say. She’s staring at the balloon.
“This motherfucker is a wannabe Pennywise the Dancing Clown.”
Rosalyn doesn’t restrain her language in the slightest. The camera’s view of their location appears to be within a luxury penthouse, far beyond her financial limitations. The living room is ultra modern with a classic touch. Jessica’s seated in the center of the couch in front of the desk, her eyes never leaving the visual before her.
“Keep going.”
It’s a simple request and Rosalyn complies. She clicks Play and allows the match to continue.
Graves curses under his breath, but just as he turns around, Sears catches him and drives him down onto the mat with “The Dixon Arrow” (Swinging DDT)! The fans burst into cheers as Jessica pulls Damon and centers him in the ring. She’s completely unaware of the red balloon drawing closer to the ring, tied to the left wrist of…
Barkley: No, no, it’s Matt Shields!
West: Look, our benevolent king has brought a red balloon for Jessica!
Barkley: And his kendo stick! Don’t you dare!!
Shields jumps the barricade, undetected by Sears as she’s climbed to the top turnbuckle. She’s looking for the “Silver Moon Shockwave” (630 Cannonball Senton), but she’s confused when the fans yell at her, trying to warn her.

“Pause.”
Rosalyn nods and clicks Pause. She directs the mouse to the top left corner of the screen to establish fullscreen mode and moves her right hand from the optical mouse.
“At the beginning of the show, Adrien, Jazmyn, Josh, and I rolled initiative.”
Leaning back against the couch, Jessica rests her left arm over the cushions and looks over her shoulder at the camera. There’s a glimmer of hope in her soft blue eyes.
“The Guardians… of the Galaxy, winners of Warfare, decided to announce our guaranteed championship shots. Adrien Cochrane challenged for the NGW Heavyweight Championship at WrestleForce 2. Josh Goldstein declared Radicalliance challenge for the NGW Tag Team Championships at Victory and Honor. Seeing as she’s the reigning and defending NGW Five Lakes Champion, Jazmyn Rain kept her guaranteed shot in her back pocket. And then I extended my shot for the Young Lions Championship on the same night.”
It was such a bold move, no one anticipated this. It took the NGW faithful by storm. She turns to face the screen again and folds her hands on her lap.
“Damon Graves and I wrestled twice in the same night. The NGW Young Lions Champion versus the Paladin of Vengeance. It was such a great match with a strong display of his strength and my dexterity… When he accidentally clocked the referee, I saw it as an opportunity to fight back. Boom! Inspired by Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead, the Dixon Arrow. He was down and I knew it was time to finish him… not in a Mortal Kombat sense, but I digress.”
A faint, warm smile crosses her face for a brief moment. Just as soon as it appears, it disappears when she focuses on the screen.
“The Nerd Nation was cheering me on. I climb to the top rope and all of a sudden, they’re yelling at me, warning me about something…”
She shakes her head slowly.
“In Dungeons and Dragons, most paladins aren’t perceptive. Unless you give them a specific background that grants them proficiency in Perception, it’s not part of their normal skill set. If Damon has studied the Paladin section of the Player’s Handbook, fifth edition, he would know that’s true. With a little more research, under the .pdf Paladin 5e Guide, it’s recommended that Wisdom is set as their fourth highest stat.”
Realizing some of the viewers may be confused, she leans back against the couch cushions and stares up at the reflective ceiling.
“...to put it simply, I failed my perception check. Miserably. We refer to that as a natural one, nat-1 for short.
Play.”
Rosalyn is right on it and the video continues without a hitch.
Shields quickly gets onto the ring apron, and the moment Sears turns, he swings the kendo stick like a baseball bat and blasts Jessica’s face! Jessica falls inside the ring and Matt chuckles darkly before he’s out of sight.
West: AHAHAHAHA! Beautiful!
Barkley: The referee didn’t see it and neither did Damon Graves. Matt Shields is about to get away with this, Michael!

“That… was the beginning of the end…”
Jessica voices over, dealing her own commentary as the video continues.
Damon slowly rises up. He turns to see Jessica is down and he moves to shake the referee. In the midst of Ed Macintosh’s revival, Damon moves back to Jessica’s prone form and lifts her up. Without knowing what really happened to her, Damon executes Jessica with “Stay Down” (Sunset Flip Powerbomb) and hooks her legs. The referee’s fully revived and he counts.
1!
Barkley: NO! Not like this!!
2!
West: This is a thing of beauty!!
3!
Ding, ding, ding!
Shae: Here is your winner of the match AND STILL the NGW Young Lions Champion… DAMON GRAVES!

“Cut.”
Without hesitation, Rosalyn stops the video altogether, slowly closes her laptop, and rises up from the comfortable office chair.
“What would James T. Kirk say?”
“Bullshit.”
“Exactly. Ladies and estrogents…”
That is extremely familiar. Jack Darling would address the audience this way. Like father, like daughter. Rosalyn continues on and looks back to the camera.
“...Jessica Sears is NOTHING like Matthew Shields. That fuckwit’s been antagonizing my sister from another mister for months. To think the asshole wasn’t paying attention to her until Ronnie North pointed out her bubbly ass. I mean, I don’t blame him for THAT. It’s a nice ass. I’ve hit that.”
Jessica’s body tenses up and she glares back at Rosalyn who quickly raises her hands.
“Sorry, sorry, I’ll edit that out.”
It was clearly not edited out.
“Rosalyn Alanna Pryce-Darling-Fernandes, please be quiet.”
And just like that, Rosalyn decides to silence herself. She takes her seat and folds her arms with a huff. Jessica sighs, a bit flustered, but she presses on.
“Rosalyn brings up a good point… There was a time when Matt barely knew I existed. He was “diagnosed” with Adrien Cochrane Quasi-Obsessive Disorder, remember? But the moment Ronnie’s promo focused on my ass, Matt’s attention was caught in a gravitational pull. Suddenly, I had his undivided attention. I’ve come to regret wearing yoga pants for that one shoot. The one for the triple threat tag team match when Adrien and I faced off against Ronnie and Kaylee, Avery and… Damon.
Heh. Things have come to a complete circle, haven’t they? This isn’t our first tag team match. This is our second, and while there was the factor of a third team in the madness, what was the result of that clusterfuck?
The Guardians of the Galaxy won.”
She rises up, turns around to face the camera, and gestures a “gun” with her right hand. A pull of the “trigger” and she lowers her hand to her side.
“Now… there’s just one problem and my brother already pointed it out. As a team, yes, we won the triple threat tag team match. Every other tag team match we’ve been in?
Versus Kayla Richards and Matt Shields, the Destroyers? Lost.
Versus Matt Shields and Jack Tillman for the NGW Tag Team Championships? Lost.
Versus Kaylee Kassie and Ronnie North, Radicalliance? Lost.
We are one-and-three. That’s… awful, and since we just lost in singles competition against Alex Jones and Damon Graves respectively, that places us in a seriously bad position. On Victory and Honor, the Guardians of the Galaxy are set to face the Destroyers. It’s up to us. We’re supposed to finally put an end to the NGW Civil War. If Adrien and I can’t defeat two members of Rebel Society tonight in Philadelphia, what chance do we have against the Destroyers at full force…?”
Slowly, Jessica lowers her head and her hands lay still at her sides. Rosalyn looks on from her seat, a grim expression on her face. Jessica’s eyes gaze upon the soft carpet floor of the living room and she speaks with a lulling sadness in her voice.
“...Nein… we have to win… I owe so much to Adrien… After Matthew tried to break my neck in Paris, France, he and Jack tried to end my career in our match. If it wasn’t for Adrien’s sacrifice, I wouldn’t be standing here right now. I would be stuck in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. My professional wrestling career would be over before it truly began. I would’ve had to surrender the Spirit and Pride X Championship and I would’ve never been able to compete for an NGW championship match… ever again.”
Tears form at the corners of her soft blue eyes and yet she looks up to the camera. She’s vulnerable, her body trembling, but that doesn’t matter to her. It’s not a weakness.
It’s courage in the face of terror.
“Damon Graves, Alex Jones, I am Jessica Elisa Sears, the Paladin of Vengeance, the youngest and perhaps most chaotic Guardian. I am Franz and Odelia Sears’ youngest daughter. My father, may he rest in peace, was the first person to have faith in me when everyone else wasn’t sure I could actually be a professional gamer. He gave me the strength to BELIEVE in myself and break the first glass ceiling of my life. My mother, bless her heart, showed me what it means to be brave. She persuaded me to give professional wrestling a second chance. It’s been exactly two years since she was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig’s Disease, yet she continues to fight on. She has shown me the HEART of the Fighter. On this Mother’s Day, on this Dissension, I will fight for her valor. Adrien and I will face you in a tag team match of honor and respect AND WE WILL TRIUMPH!”
Jessica remains standing, the tears spilling down her cheeks, and she’s no longer shaking. Breathing deeply, she stares into the camera and throws out a peace sign with her right hand.
“We’re the Guardians of the fucking Galaxy. Game on, Rebel Society.”
