The scene opens with Dead Eye pressing “play” via his PS4 controller to the Blu-ray of The Dark Knight. The following clip is seen.
Joker (to Batman): “Oh, you. You just couldn’t let me go, could you? This is what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. You are truly incorruptible, aren’t you? Huh? You won’t kill me out of some misplaced sense of self-righteousness. And I won’t kill you because you’re just too much fun. I think you and I are destined to do this forever.”
Dead Eye hits pause on the controller (specifically, the circle button), and looks into the camera.
Dead Eye: “I'll finish this later. Now, that may be a little extreme to describe the rivalry between myself and Avery Miles, III, but I think some of Heath Ledger’s lines there hold true. For those uninformed, there has been a war waging between the two of us since we first hit the ground running in NGW. At times, we were bitter rivals. Remember the street fight, Ave? I still have the scars to remind me. Fortunately, mine are external.”
He shows his left arm to the camera, where the scar from a once long cut is seen. He makes a face as if to say, “Shit happens”.
Dead Eye: “Yours have got to be mental. Think about it. All this time and I even forget how many times, but… Each rip, you give your all but fall short. I do give my besty his due. Much like Batman, he just keeps coming back for more. Despite the brokenness, defeats, and any other spin I later decide to put on it, Avery Miles continues to never say die.
“One must wonder if we truly are destined to do this forever. Well, as long as we're both physically able to do so, but I digress. An unstoppable force meeting an immovable object has been used in this business to describe odds that one shouldn't be able to overcome. So, do you yet see my point here?
“I don't think history needs to be mentioned again. Besides, I know Avery remembers. He wants to see the best version of me. I want the same from him. I want the flagship he was elsewhere. I want the man that scratched and clawed after losing his family. I want THE best Avery Miles that exists.
“What I don't want is my best friend. That won't do either of us any good. I want him to do whatever he feels it takes to make that attempt to finally beat me. I don't want any feelings involved. I don't wanna hear how ‘it's just business’. I want a damn fight...the fight as if Avery was in a ‘you lose, you die’ match. I won't accept anything less, Avery.
“I promise you that if you give me any less than that. If I somehow flub and you don't take advantage, I will take you backstage and whip your ass a second time as punishment for you not living up to your full potential. Then, I'll pick you up off the cement floor and take you out for a drink or two.”
He walks over to a wall, where several pictures are seen hanging on the wall. One picture in particular is focused on…
Dead Eye points to it.
Dead Eye: “Those of you new around here may be wondering why I have a picture of myself that looks like it was taken at Halloween. This isn't the case. See, I have this to remind me of things. For one, this particular ‘look’ is what I donned a couple times in… Well...darker times for me. You remember it, Ave? You should. I'll remind you of the street fight.
“I'll also remind you of a piece of art I titled ‘Villain…or Nah?’ See, to everyone then, I was a douchebag for pointing out Avery's shortcomings and the beatings I gave him… And then, how a green rookie in Karin Jasper did the same to him.”
He pauses as he seems pleased with himself. Even recently, he wasn't able to mention KJ’s name without cringing and having sore feelings come rushing back to him, mixed with severe pain.
Dead Eye: “Progress. I can say that name without going off the deep end. Anyway, I keep this to remind me of that dark time right before that particular match took place. You can't get where you're going without remembering where you came from. It's why I have ‘Compton’ tatted on me and why I remember those tough times.
“Everyone knows I've been through hell and back recently. I'll never use that as an excuse for what happened against Coral Rose.”
He vehemently shakes his head “no”.
Dead Eye: “I demand results from myself, no excuses. I froze, plain and simple. Trust me, that won't happen again. Will I make a mistake or two? More probable than not. I am just returning, after all.”
He shrugs.
Dead Eye: “I guess we'll see, won't we? I say all that to say this. Listen closely, Avery Jamison Miles, the third. I will NOT be a stepping stone. I am going to give you the fight of your life. I will be your friend, your enemy, your rival, as you so eloquently put it. I will be your reaper once again. You are my frenemy when we're in the ring.
“I will not be vanquished like some virus. I'm gonna cling to you like the Clap, and be that itch that just won't go away— haunting you in your dreams. I don't necessarily wanna do it. I hate how it affects your psyche, but remember, kid. You asked for it.
“You asked for all this. You wanted Dead Eye back. You came all the way to Seattle not just to get me out of the pit but back in the ring. More so, you brought me back from the grave to show you the best Avery. Well, be careful what you wish for.”
He sighs.
Dead Eye: “It couldn't happen to a nicer guy.”
He gives a lopsided smile and cuts off the feed.
