Dead Eye: “‘After Cain had murdered his brother Abel, God asked him where his brother was. Cain answered, “I know not; am I my brother's keeper?” Note: Cain's words have come to symbolize people's unwillingness to accept responsibility for the welfare of their fellows — their “brothers” in the extended sense of the term.’ If you look up the term ‘my brother's keeper’ and see what dictionary.com has to say, what I just read is what you'll get.
“That's where the term comes from, but this term describes one of my roles in life. It's exactly why I chose Lest We Forget as my first public appearance in two years. It's why Kayla Richards has constantly and cowardly attacked my brother, Avery Miles, after matches. She knows if she tries to lay a hand on him any other time, she'll have me to deal with.
“That's part of what makes my upcoming match such a conflict of interest. Needless to say, I was beside myself when I got the word that I was to face Ave at Dissension. Don't get me wrong; I knew it was inevitable. It's too big of a draw not to become a signed match. Do I think Dissension is a big enough stage? Absolutely not. I am not naïve enough to think that just my namesake deserves the draw. No.
I have paid close attention to what Avery Miles, III has done in my absence from the squared circle. He has more than made a name for himself. I could list all the accolades, but he seemingly thought he needed to list ‘em for me…as if I were some n00b making his NGW debut.”
He smirks.
Dead Eye: “I love you, Ave. You know that. When I couldn't count on anyone else in this world, including those who I thought would never leave my side, there were only two people who reached out to me when I was going down the road of calamity and despair. Those people were Adrien Cochrane and you, Avery. Hell, you came all the way out to Seattle, where I thought no one but my business partner and my moms knew I was.
“You came out there worried about me. You saw a disheveled relic from NGW’s past. I saw the hurt in your eyes when you took that first glance at me. True to form, you didn't go for the dig. Hell, you danced around the subject until I opened that door. Then, you did something I never expected. I should have, but things were so bad in my mind’s eye that I didn't open myself up to the remote possibility.
“You offered me family.”
Dead Eye taps a closed fist on his heart twice.
Dead Eye: “You offered me a fresh start in a new environment and the opportunity to get back hands-on with my first love, wrestling. For that, I will be forever grateful. It is because of you that I'm back with NGW today. Let's face it. I was actually content with running my restaurant and catching some clients on the side doing some counseling like I was Alex Cross or summin…minus the badge, of course.
“Above that, you offered your family to be my family. I've grown so close to you and Serenity, and I can't wait to do the same with the twins. I'm proud to call you family. Now, I stand at a crossroad.
“I will do my job come Dissension. It won't be easy, but if it were; then, I wouldn't be here. The world saw my epic failure. In the words of Paul Wall, I got the internet going nuts. Cept in this case, it's not for the reasons I normally would. It certainly isn't the type of fanfare I got when I made my surprise-to-the-fans return.
“It's certainly not the kinda buzz that the match announcement of Coral Rose vs. Dead Eye. No, this is something that can only remind me of losing my first shot at the NGW title. Now, you have the ‘experts’ asking if I still got it. Was I just a flash in the pan? Will I ever be Dead Eye again?
“You've never doubted that, have you? You need this as much as I do. I get it. You said it yourself. Having me and KJ push you is what made you. Muchos grassy ass for the compliments. You need that little push to get you ready to ascend to the next level.
“Let me remind you of something, though, my brother. Not to be an asshole, but may I remind you of our win-loss record against each other?
“I know you've changed. You deserve a Most Improved award right next to the Hall of Fame ring and the other accolades. There's one thing you lack, Avery. You just simply can't beat me. History shows it. You push me, I push you. That's how it's always been and always will be. One day…one day, you and I will share that grande stage with the gold on the line.
“Until then, we have a date with destiny. That date is fast approaching. I know you. I know you will pull out all the stops. I know that the world questions my abilities after what they witnessed days ago. Hell, I wonder just what it'll take to defrost, if you will.
“Maybe it's a match against you. Who knows? One thing I do know is that when the dust clears, when the ref calls for the bell, I will be ready to throw an assist your way if your little not-so-secret admirer tries to pull a stunt.”
A look of disdain comes across the face of Dead Eye.
Dead Eye: “Let's see if Kayla Richards has the gall to attack with me right by your side. This isn't about her, though. This is about me and you once again facing off. It's about the redemption of Dead Eye. Just like NGW was resurrected, so am I. You won't get a repeat of ice water. Hell, I'll stay away from the top rope if need be.
“Check the stats. I got so many other ways of winning matches. Do I love the high risk, high rewards stuff? Bet your last dollar I do. I wouldn't have finishing my training in Japan if I didn't. But… Just like you showed the world your roots, mine was in MMA. I could have done that for a living, but it wasn't my passion.
“This is. I think that's why we were destined to be both rivals and best friends. I can't think of many more people that share my passion of this business like you do, Ave. I saw it in your eyes the first time we got into the ring together. You remember that night, Avery? Do you remember the battle royal? Do you remember Trials and Tribulations II? All of it?
“I do. I also remember the pain we've shared together. We hated but respected each other, but pain brought us together… and hunger. Hunger to be the best and to train others to be the best. Before and after the match, I will be my brother's keeper. Unfortunately, at Dissension, I have to resume the role of my brother's reaper.”
He shuts off the feed.
