Lately, I've been
Livin' in my head
The rest of me is dead,
I dying for truth.
Make me, believe,
No more left and right,
Come on take my side,
I'm fighting for you,
Fighting for you.
Pleased to meet you take my hand,
There is no way back from here,
Pleased to meet you say your prayers,
There is no way back from here,
But I don't care,
No way back from here
“Hello there, Alex Jones. Our paths cross once more, it would seem.”
Nothing too special about what’s going on from the perspective of the GoPro Hero 6 that is currently a few feet in front of Adrien Cochrane. The NGW competitor sits outside the establishment in downtown Washington D.C. owned and operated by NGW Heavyweight Champion Johnny Maverick, the DHS, a location offered by Maverick for the after party for Dissension.
“You are right though. One hundred percent right. We’ve been in the ring with one another what feels like double-digit matches. The #FSociety Triple Threat, a few tag matches, Lest We Forget’s Strange Bedfellows II finales, Warfare...all of those involved multiple people. There’s never been a time where the two of us were in the ring with one another as singles opponents from bell to bell. Who is the better competitor of the night: Adrien Cochrane or Alex Jones?
“If history says anything, I feel like we can have this match a few times with different outcomes. And I hope this doesn’t end up being our only match because I like talented opponents. I like opponents I can step into the ring with and know I’m getting everything they can give me and push me to my limit, if not defeat me. It’s one of the reasons I said I would go one-on-one with Johnny Maverick again when the opportunity presents itself. I know I’m getting the same thing from you: a battle of fierce competitors, trying to show that they are one of the best in the business. You’ve made that mission for so long. And in the end, is it really a mission we can really say that we truly reach for as long as there’s the ‘next match’, have we truly conquered everything while there are so many matches to go?
“But I guess now isn’t the time for that philosophical debate with someone who has tried to retire a couple of times and realized there was more wrestling to do. This isn’t about the mountain that we are trying to climb. This is about one single step. Alex Jones. Adrien Cochrane. The Black Dragon versus the Dropkick King.”
The cool blue eyes of Adrien Cochrane look into the camera for a moment and gives a weak smile. He has a duffle bag with what one can only assume is his wrestling gear as this is being videoed only hours before the show. The cooler temperature of the nation’s capital in contrast to his hometown has Adrien wearing a long sleeve button down green and white plaid shirt. His jeans are darker than your typical blue jeans and aren’t too loose on the New Orleanian. His key-shaped necklace was drawn over his shirt.
“You call me a shining light, the face of the company. You mention the amount of respect you have towards me. It’s shared, Alex. The feeling is mutual. But only one of us has won the Global Cup, and it’s not me. To use a football term, I haven’t done enough to be considered the face of the franchise. I’ve stood up to the Destroyers, yes, but the whole reason you and Avery formed the Rebel Society was that the thought that the Guardians wasn’t going to be enough to finish the job, including myself. And look where we are. Look at the people you have on your side. Avery Miles: Marquee Champion and Tag Team Champion. Damon Graves: current Young Lions Champion and over a trillion tag titles. Daisy Rose: Tag Team Champion and Spotlight Champion. And then there’s Alex Jones: the man who has the World Titles to his name and this year’s Global Cup sitting on his bookshelf.
“It makes me wonder: why am I considered the face and not you? What have I done here? A pretty decent fifty-nine percent winning percentage, compared to the rest of the company anyway. To me: I have yet to obtain the right to call myself the face of the company, regardless of the decision to put me on the WrestleForce II poster. That is something that has to be earned, and believe me, I am going to keep pushing til I do earn such a title.
“But I’m not there yet. I stood up to the Destroyers but they are still at large. I’ve defended the people I love to the best of my ability, but they have still been harmed by those forces. I’ve had a chance at the big championship and allowed myself to be outside of the ring when Kayla Richards pinned Johnny Maverick, similar to how I lost my championship when I was unable to prevent you from being pinned in #FSociety.
“This isn’t self-doubt, don’t misunderstand me. I’m just at this level…”
Adrien holds out his hand, flat and a few inches below his chin to signify what level he believes himself to currently be at.
“When I think I can be here.”
Adrien moves his hand above his head, about a foot higher than it was previously, stating the goal he wants to be at.
“And that means being the best wrestler I can possibly be. That means the Destroyers being rid of. That means not squandering a championship opportunity. Yeah, we can look back at what I’ve done in the past and in other companies, but WrestleForce is going to be the anniversary of my debut. I need to do more in a year than just be the guy who stood up to the Destroyers. I started a mission, and there’s no way back from that. What I’ve done so far has been fine. But it’s not the end goal. I’ve got work to do still.
“And that’s where you come in, Alex Jones. You’re going to help me get to where I need to be by giving me the best challenge one can possibly give me. You’re going to give me the fight that has been waiting to happen all these years. Win or lose, you’re helping me be the best wrestler I can be.
“And for that, I earnestly thank you. Let’s go set the world on fire, Black Dragon.”
Wake me, I'm ready,
Something don't seem right,
I was dreamin',
I was talking to you,
Memory, mend me,
Know I've seen my share,
Things I can't repair,
I'm breakin' to you,
I'm breakin' to you.
Pleased to meet you take my hand,
There is no way back from here,
Pleased to meet you say your prayers,
There is no way back from here,
But I don't care,
No way back from, here
