Nerd Paladin, Level Up!
File 012: (No) Mercy | (いいえ) 慈悲
Within the walls of the Sensō-ji Temple in Tokyo, Japan, Jessica Sears is kneeling on a clean purple floor mat. She’s wearing a beautiful Japanese sakura pink kimono and her long blonde hair is brushed and styled into a lovely updo held together by decorative lacquered chopsticks. Calming incense of nobika with sandalwood flows freely from their respective burners and this brings her inner peace. On the morning after the fifth night of KAMIKAZE Pro Evolution’s Lords of the Rings, the Rey de Vuelo finalist appears calm and composed.
“Christopher Samuel Marks.”
However, this particular shoot begins to revolve around New Generation Wrestling’s Dissension this Sunday night in Washington D.C. She takes a slow, deep breath and lets it out just the same.
“Let me educate you for a moment. Visually speaking, welcome to Sensō-ji. This is an ancient Buddhist temple in Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan. It is one of the most significant temples in the city. It is also the oldest temple with a history of fourteen hundred years. This temple was built to honor Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy.
Now, you’re probably thinking… what does any of this have to do with you? If I’m recording in a temple represented by mercy, does that mean I’m going to be merciful to you?
The correct answer is…”
The entire time, Jessica’s eyes were closed. It’s only now when they open, the soft blue color of her eyes shimmering in the natural light of the outside. She offers an honest smirk.
“No. No, I’m not. After everything that’s transpired, why should I, the Paladin of Vengeance, show you mercy? If my Oath was Devotion, perhaps I would be so kind, but... You’ve shared your side of the story between you and my future brother-in-law, Adrien Cochrane… Let’s be honest, you over exaggerated your perspective.
Adrien takes you in when you have absolutely nothing in your life. You’re welcomed into the home of a kind and selfless man who also gives you food and drink. He trains you to be his protégé and all he asks for in return is your respect. You live in someone’s house, you abide by their rules. It’s simple, right? Except you do anything but respect him and his rules. You smoked in the house and drank alcohol profusely. You were rude and inconsiderate to everyone around you. You were lazy, you lived like a pig, and you took his mentorship for granted.
Then one day, you traded your loyalty for money. Edward Nair presented you one hundred thousand dollars and you betrayed Adrien. You took all the kindness, compassion, and generosity he offered you and you threw it back at him with a superkick.”
Shaking her head, she leans down to gently pick up onenju, Buddhist prayer beads. She adjusts herself into a prayer’s position and closes her eyes for a moment.
“I’m doing you a favor, Chris. I’m praying to Kannon, so she can grant you the mercy that I will not give you this Dissension.”
She chuckles softly and takes a moment to actually pray. There’s the soft sound of wind chimes hanging on the outside that dance to a gentle breeze. Once Jessica reaches the end of her prayer, she carefully sets the beads down and looks up towards the camera again.
“So you won against a former West Coast Genesis Long Beach Champion, Shawn Young… on Crossroad: Escalation. I’m not going to lie, that’s impressive. However, on your official WCG record, that’s your first win out of eight matches. Are you really going to brag about such a feat? I suppose that’s a change from your normal demeanor. Every time you lose a match, you curse, yell, and scream out loud. You tell the opponents who defeated you…”
She pauses, clearly aware of her tranquil surroundings, and she shakes her head.
“Well, I won’t speak of it here. This temple is too nice, calming, and serene to share your unsavory words. To put it simply, you’re incredibly dissatisfied with the end result. You’re still working on acquiring an official contract with the company and yet you’ve shown no motive for it. It’s the same old song and dance, but you blame everyone else for your mistakes.
Truth be told, I almost feel… sorry for you, Christopher. You could have been a successful protégé. You could have been a great professional wrestler, living a good and honest life. You could truly be happy with your life had you been respectful and loyal. Unfortunately, you threw it all away. You chose to give in to the temptation of money and feed into one of the seven deadly sins, greed. You decided to hurt innocent people and resort to horrible actions to get what you want. Yet… none of these things have been working for you so far. Edward Nair seems to care less and less about you. From a fairly recent conversation with my older sister, he’s waiting for you to crawl back to him on your hands and knees like a dog…
...and not a proud Dog of War either.”
She considers the Lords of the Ring and nods slowly.
“I’m not going to say this match will be an easy victory for me. I’ve learned never to underestimate my opponents, no matter who they are, and I’ve taken the time to do my research while I’ve been here in Tokyo. Nevertheless… I feel the need to take myself to the next level in NGW. Since my return, I’ve experienced both victory and defeat. I helped my family, the Guardians of the Galaxy, win Warfare. My Guardian sister, Jazmyn Rain, has already reached the golden stage by winning the Five Lakes Championship from Jack Tillman. It’s time for the rest us to step onto that stage and level up alongside her.
This is the Rise of the Guardians…
...and the Fall of the Destroyers.”
Respectfully, the Paladin fully bows, her right hand gently taking the prayer beads. She takes a deep breath, lets it out slowly, and rises up. She lifts herself to stand and raises her left hand’s index finger to her lips.
“Level up... or be silenced. Game on.”
