Dry Branch, GA
April 8th, 2018
At the home of Avery and Serenity Miles, CJ and Chey are saying their goodbyes. Adrien, Everalda, and Klaus just left the gathering. As they walk out the front door, Chey turns to Serenity.
Chey: Thanks again for the invite, it was great meeting all of you.
Serenity: It was great meeting you, too.
After parting ways at the Miles’ door, CJ and Chey get into CJ’s blue BMW 440i convertible. They wave to Avery and Serenity as they drive off.
CJ: So, what ya think? Had fun?
Chey: Yes, your friends are awesome. They were very welcoming of newcomers.
CJ: Yeah, they good people. They are always there for me, they more like family than just normal friends, to be honest.
Chey: Well. Since we're being honest, sitting around the table with them made me miss my own family.
Chey thinks back on family gatherings back in Florida. Her mom would make all her favorite dishes. The whole house was filled with love, and the smell of good home cooking.
Sensing Cheyenne drifting off like he often does, in-thought, CJ figures he should ask a question to get her talking instead of thinking of whatever has garnered her attention.
CJ: Do you have family around here?
Chey: Yeah, my older sister, Camilla lives here. My parents are back in Florida. I have been missing them a lot lately.
CJ: I see. Sounds like you could use a little family reunion. My fam is back in Cali. Well, my moms.
Saying those words brought back the pain of losing his father right as he was getting his wrestling career going in the United States.
Chey gets quiet for a few minutes, wondering how her parents are doing.
Chey: Yeah. It would be really nice to see them.
CJ: Well, until then, you just made some new friends. Soon enough, they will start to feel like family.
Chey smiles at CJ.
CJ: Why don't you just go see them if you're missing ‘em? Or am I prying and steppin’ outta ma lane on that one?
Though the two have gained a friendship pretty quickly in the weeks they have known each other, there are always certain boundaries one doesn't want to cross. CJ is checking himself on that note with his question.
Chey: Nah, you good. I guess I could go visit them. I'd have to see about taking some time off work, but I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem. Camilla hasn't been back home in a while either, maybe I'll talk to her and we can both go..
CJ: There ya go.. Sounds like a plan. I'm sure they gonna be happy to see y'all.
Not wanting to stay the course of the conversation, Chey decides to change the subject with a question she has had on her mind.
Chey: So, I know it's been a while since you've stepped into the ring for the first time. Have any advice for me?
CJ: I may have been away for a while, but I fashion myself a student of the game. I've done a lot of training — both for myself and training others. The biggest advice is to stay within yourself. What I mean by that is... Don't allow yourself to think too much when you get out there. You will have nerves; do your best to control them. Just do what you feel comfortable doing. Don't overdo it, yaknow?
CJ pauses for a moment, thinking.
CJ: Yaknow, I need to take that advice, myself because I know I'll be tryna go back to 'being me'. I gotta remember my body is a little limited, especially this first rip.
He stares off at the road ahead for a few moments while driving, creating an odd silence in the convertible.
Chey looks over at CJ. She's wondering what he's thinking about, even though she has a lot on her mind already.
Chey: So, I really enjoyed meeting everyone today, but I I have to say something.
CJ glances over and notices Chey looks a little nervous.
CJ: Shoot…
Chey: Well, Serenity asked me how you and I met. She followed that with telling me she was expecting you to show up alone, rather than with a female friend. She had this smile, like she knew something, when she said the word friend. It was a little odd to me, so I really didn't respond to it.
CJ responds to this by mimicking Serenity's smile.
Chey: Yeah, like that.
Chey let's out a small nervous chuckle. CJ laughs briefly, knowing just where Cheyenne is going with this. However, he doesn't know just what went through her mind in what was apparently a similar “situation” that he found himself in.
With “girl talk” —and having gotten to know Serenity— CJ wonders just how deep the two women's conversation actually was and if Chey did indeed opt not the respond to what may have been a deeper relationship suspicion on the part of Serenity Miles.
CJ: Uh, yeah. I had a similar ‘conversation’ with Avery.
At the same time, CJ is curious as to what exact level of interest Cheyenne sees in him. He often wonders about a semi-flirtatious nature that is displayed. Is that just part of her makeup? Or is there something more behind it?
This particular conversation was bound to come up, and CJ didn't exactly know how to broach the subject. Now that the card was played with neither seemingly knowing how to play it, another awkward silence enters the vehicle.
Chey breaks the silence.
Chey: So, what did Avery say? I mean, not to pry but, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious.
CJ chuckles for a moment at the rebound on the prying.
CJ: Go right in for the kill, huh? I'll show you mine if you show me yours.
CJ tries to maintain his composure with the joke at-hand, not knowing how she'll respond to his brand of humor at times.
Chey laughs then gets almost serious for a minute
Chey: I'll show you mine alright, but I better wait. I prefer if you kept ya eyes on the road.
CJ's look upon that response can only be described with an emoji: 👀
CJ: OH, snap! Beat me at my own game. Chey: 1, CJ: 0. So, yeah. What were we talking about? I think I went elsewhere for a moment…
Chey: Same. So, since I beat you, you gunna tell me what Avery said?
CJ: We goin’ for full disclosure here?
CJ raises an eyebrow wondering where this conversation will go and what the implications will be moving forward.
Chey: Yep. So spill..
CJ smirks.
CJ: Fine. He goes, “So, Chey…” to which, I naturally replied, “I'm CJ.”
CJ looks over briefly, smirking at his own joke —something he seems to do on the regular.
CJ: Like the “I'm pregnant” joke, Ave didn't find that as funny as everyone else did, myself included, of course. So, I honestly didn't know where he was going with that.
This is the point where there is a weird nervousness involved in where the conversation went next with Avery. CJ takes an opportunity to take a sip of his fruit punch RockStar from his center console.
CJ: So, yeah. Uh… He then pointed out that he noticed um… how I uh...look at you and said it was cute that I uh...had a crush… I had to sit on da couch on dat one, heh.
CJ nervously clears his throat. He chooses that moment to stop not sure how she would take his response to what Avery told him.
Chey has to turn her head and look out the window. She started to blush and didn't want CJ to see.
Chey: Oh, I see. Well, let me ask you something.
Chey wasn't sure where she was going with that. Although she can be shy at times, she's normally upfront. She decided to go in for the kill, again.
Chey: Do you have a crush on me?
CJ: Oh, wow. Not pulling any punches, are we?
Chey just simply shakes her head “no”.
CJ: Um…er…
James is truly baffled at both the question and how to reply to it.
Chey: What's the matter, CJ? Cat got your tongue? Should I take that as a yes?
With impeccable timing, an exit is directly ahead. CJ takes the exit and pulls into a gas station to the immediate right of the off-ramp.
CJ: Gimme a second here. I can't have this conversation and drive at the same time without losing focus on the road.
Chey nods wondering what's going on in the head of CJ. He, too, is normally very sure of himself. At the moment, though, he feels a bit torn. He's torn between what his gut is telling him and what history tells him.
There is that curiosity inside of him. That said, the pain and heartache he has been going through has never left the forefront of either his mind or his emotions. He really does not know how to respond here.
CJ: Since you put me on the spot, can I ask you a quick question? Well, besides that being a question in itself. Heh.
Chey: Of course, you can ask me anything.
CJ: Okay, then. It’s not so much a question as...say. I wanna hear your thoughts on the subject, since you wanna put a nigga on the spot and all…
CJ clears his throat. Perhaps if he hears what is going through her mind with all of this, it may remove a question mark or two from his thought process.
Chey: Okay. Well, I know you've been through a lot. I don't know all the details, but I know what I've seen. I'm not saying we should jump into anything here, but yes, I do like you. I have caught myself looking at you.. In a way I didn't think I would.
CJ blows out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. For the life of him, he cannot figure out why he was nervous about how Chey would respond. Was Avery right? Does have a “cute crush”?
CJ: The name of the game is obviously full disclosure here, right?
He pauses a moment but not long enough to warrant a response to his rhetorical question.
CJ: Okay, I’ma tell you what I told Ave, but hold off any reaction ‘til I’m done is all I ask. Cool?
Chey: Okay, you got it.
CJ: Nah, this ain’t verbatim, but I said summin along the lines about it not being like dat. I said you intrigue me, and I am curious. I also said something to the effect of what you just mentioned.
He turns to face her for the first time since the conversation got so deep. He briefly looks at her but then cannot help but to look down in despair. A single tear trickles down the corner of his eye, something he knew was coming and one reason he lowered his head.
CJ: I have been through SO many ups and downs these past five years.
The look of a torn man is now seen on the face of the man called Dead Eye. He is currently nothing like his in-ring persona. He seems a shell of even himself at present.
CJ: Every time victory has entered my life so has tragedy. When I was in college, I paid my way by doing mixed martial arts. Granted, I did it here and there and on a semi-pro level. I was good at it, but I didn’t wanna do it professionally. So, a buddy of mine saw that some of my style was wrestling based and suggested I train with this guy he knew in Las Vegas.
Cool. I fell in love immediately. I always had this thing with wrestling from watching it with my dad as a kid. I was married to my high school sweetheart, and things were really looking up. What I loved most was the Luchadore style of wrestling. That took me to extended training in Mexico. Well, that wasn’t good enough for Kianna, so she left me. Tragedy number one.
I finish up there and do more training in Japan to pick up my speed and round out the high-flying. I get a lot of good looks from companies back in the States. They wanna sign me. A bidding war ensues. Well, tragedy number two… I rupture my Achilles heel. I’m on the shelf for six months.
I get over that and join NGW. My career skyrockets. My dad passes before I could reach my pinnacle. Now, I introduce you to tragedy number three. Somehow, fate works out that I meet KJ at his wake.
Again, things are looking up. I find the love of my life, get married again, win the big one. Guess what? You may think I’m gonna introduce you to tragedy number four, but wait…there’s more. Wrapped up in tragedy four is her evil twin tragedy number five.
The dreaded broken neck finds itself combined with divorce number two. So, yeah. You were right. I’ve been through quite a bit that I just don’t know. I just don't know.
Unbeknownst to himself until he finishes talking is the fact that tears are now dropping rapidly. He takes a moment to wipe them as he puts his hands on his face to not show the side he has tried so hard to hide from the world.
At the same time, he does not want to see what type of facial reaction Cheyenne has after his outpouring of his heart that he certainly did not intend to share at such a complete 180 from the conversation at-hand.
CJ: And now that I’ve scarred you for life, you still like a broken shell like this?
He points to himself and for the first time looks up as he points to himself in complete disgust of his inability to move on from the things that keep finding him to haunt him.
After hearing all of that, Chey can't help but want to hug CJ. She can tell he is just beside himself. Being the bold person that she is, she decides to hug him anyway. She feels the need to express herself and let him know, she is there and can help him try to move forward.
Chey releases her hug with CJ. She gives him a light and friendly slap on the arm.
CJ: Hey! What’s that for?
Chey: I know what you're trying to do. You're trying to avoid the question.
Chey laughs for a moment, but then gets serious.
Chey: I really appreciate you sharing that with me. I know it must be tough, bringing up those painful memories.
Chey lifts CJs head so she can look him in the eyes.
Chey: You should know, I'm not going anywhere. I see past the broken man others see. From the moment we met, I knew, we were meant to cross paths.
Chey gets quiet, hoping she didn't just make things awkward. She's been through her own fair share of disappointment and tragedy. The last thing she wants is to add to CJ's pain.
CJ: I’m not a strong believer in coincidence, myself. Of course, I have been wrong before. I appreciate what you said. I really do. It means a lot. I just… I can’t put someone else through pain anymore. There’s clearly something wrong with me, since women keep leaving me…
CJ makes a groaning face that those words actually left his mouth. He knows that his issue is that he is afraid of facing pain yet again. He cannot afford to go through more ups and downs, especially with his return approaching. Now that he has put himself in the awkward position, he is unsure what to follow up with.
He rubs his chin and takes another sip of what has, so far, been an ineffective energy drink.
Chey: Well, you can take comfort in knowing that I won't be going anywhere. You can't get rid of me that easily. I'm not after your heart or here to hurt you, I'm here to help you pick up the broken pieces and be your friend. Whatever happens, happens.
Chey pauses for a moment and just looks at CJ. She can tell he is at a loss for words.
Chey: And by the way, there is nothing wrong with you. You've been hurt, in more ways than one. There's no way you can go through all what you went through, and not feel any pain. It's totally normal, the way you feel.
CJ: You’re not the first person that tells me that. I guess I should start listening to people more. It’s just tough, I guess. I feel like I just had a pity party for myself. I definitely appreciate people being there for me. I can't deal with flaky. I’ve dealt too much with that. That said, I keep saying that the toughest thing for me is lack of control. I’ve spent the past two years with very little control of things in my life.
Now, I feel like I’m gaining some control. I’m getting back in the ring. I’m successfully living on my own in a strange place. No offense… I know you’re not from here, either, but this is a lot different than what I’m used to.
To stop “ducking you,” I guess I should go back to where this all started. Does Charles James have a crush on Cheyenne Rae?
He pauses and rubs his hand on his chin. He continues doing it until her hand goes up like she is going to give him another slap.
CJ: Well, okay. Lemme break it down for ya. I told Avery that I’m intrigued and curious. I know I said that already, but bear with me. I think I'm going somewhere with this. The way you said you've caught yourself looking at me… And who could blame you?
He takes a moment to issue a quick wink.
CJ: Anyway, that “looking” is something I was completely oblivious to until earlier when Avery so elegantly pointed that out to me. I’ll be honest. I was beside myself. And I quickly said “it ain’t like that” to him. You’re beautiful. I’ll say it aloud. You've got a very intriguing personality, and I think we both realized we clicked from the jump. I'd be lying if I said there's nothing there, okay? Happy?
He briefly, playfully sticks his tongue out at her. He then takes her hand into his.
CJ: I like you, as well. I'm just not at a point where I think I'd be any good in a relationship. I swear I'm not hittin’ you with a “it's not you; it's me”. I'm just tryna be honest here.
CJ doesn't know whether to release her hand or nah. He opts to hold onto it because he wants to gage her reaction and show his appreciation for her hugging him in his moment of despair. Or is it more that something feels right about her hand in his?
Chey: I hear ya, and I appreciate your honesty. Like I said, whatever happens, happens. I'm not into rushing things, myself. I can be very upfront, but I'm also a ‘go with the flow’ type of person.
Chey pauses and glances down at their hands. When he grabbed her hand, she felt something. Rather than saying that, she simply squeezes his hand a little tighter. This way, she's saying ‘don't let go’ without actually speaking.
Chey is now lost in thought. She's staring at their entangled hands, smiling. CJ takes notice of this. He's not sure whether he should comment or not. Instead, he offers a quick smile.
CJ: So, um. Should we just sit here, or shall we get to heading back? I don't wanna keep you out too late.
He winks.
Chey: I could sit here and talk with you all night. I don't have any place that I have to be.
She situates herself to be sitting more comfortably, seeming more relaxed than before. Their hands still interlocked.
Chey: But, I suppose we both should be getting back home. I guess it is getting kinda late. That is, unless you have something better in mind.
CJ: Well, damn. Whatever happens, happens ain't a joke, huh? I'm not saying I was in a rush to get home, per sé. I just don't feel like being on the interstate all night. I do say that I'm enjoying your company ‘bout as much as you seem to be enjoying having my hand right now.
CJ smirks as he attempts to catch her off-guard. He wasn't oblivious to the head turn/blush duck move a few minutes ago.
Chey smiles and once again, blushes. She thinks for a moment, then squeezes his hand tightly.
Chey: How about you enjoy my company a bit longer? I have a guest room, you're welcome to crash at my place. I promise I'll try to be good.
CJ: Been a minute since I had a sleepover, but on a serious note… Do you think that's a good idea? I'm not saying I'm opposed. I just…
He pauses for a moment to choose his words.
CJ: You promise to be good?
Chey: I promise, that I'll try. No pressure though. I'm just really enjoying our talk. The openness and honesty is refreshing and very different from what I'm used to. While I do promise to try and be good, I wouldn't necessarily mind something happening.
She pauses for a minute, making sure to choose her next words carefully.
Chey: Again, no pressure. Not trying to make something happen. I'm just wanting to be there for you.. And you know.. Like I said, whatever happens happens.
CJ: All that said, I could go for a change of scenery. I know that going back on the road will alleviate me just being in the same place so much, but I really haven't gone a whole lot of places since moving here.
He pauses and has a puzzled look on his face.
CJ: I been meaning to ask something that keeps slipping my mind. Earlier, you mentioned work. You planning on staying at the gym? How's that gonna work out with the way we travel?
As he waits for the answer to his question, he releases her hand to start the car to get back to heading back toward their destination.
CJ: I'ma need my hand back…
Chey: I'll most likely stop working at the gym. I'll give them a heads up soon on that, and help find a replacement for me.
She pauses for a minute again, realizing that everything would soon change.
Chey: You can have your hand back… For now.
Chey smiles. He nods in-thought.
CJ: I was just curious is all. I just picked up on that earlier and forgot, since you decided to make this trip all personal.
He smirks.
CJ: So, you wanna do makeup and play dress-up? Or nah?
Chey: Sounds like a plan to me. You can brush my hair and I can paint your nails! We can stay up all night eating junk food and gossiping.
Chey laughs, the thought of that grown man with hot pink glitter nail polish was just too much.
Chey: Or, we could play truth or dare.
CJ: Wow, old school. Ha! Nah I'm Gucci. I'm more of a Net… nevermind. Yeah, well. If you're diggin the talk time, I'm down. It has been a long day, so I'm not sure how long I'll be good company.
He shrugs and takes of a sip of the now warm energy drink.
CJ: I definitely shoulda re-upped all that time we were sitting at that gas station.
Chey: I definitely enjoy the talk time. And, yeah, it has been a long day. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tired right now. Gunna feel good to lay back and relax.
CJ has a look like he is thinking.
CJ: How about we stop at a Redbox when we get to Hotlanta and pick up something to watch… Maybe get some popcorn or summin?
Chey: That sounds good to me. What kinda movies do you like? I'd have to say for me, I like comedies. I'll watch anything though.
CJ: I'm Gucci with just about anything, as long as it ain't a “chick flick”. Them thangs ain't any kinda realistic.
CJ shakes his head at some of the storylines in movies he's endured for others’ sakes in the past.
CJ: Yeah, so gimme something other than that, and I'm solid. Anything come out you got in mind?
As he asks this, he turns onto the on-ramp to get back onto the interstate to head back to Atlanta, where Chey lives.
Chey: Not too sure what's out right now. I'll pull up the redbox app on my phone and see what they have. Doesn't have to be a comedy, can be whatever. As long as it's not a documentary, I'm good.
Chey pulls out her phone and looks through the redbox app.
CJ: I can dig certain documentaries like the 9/11 conspiracy ones. Those are interesting...and anything ancient astronaut theory.
He smirks.
CJ: See anything you like? On the app, I mean…
He issues a lopsided smile.
Chey: Those documentaries actually sound pretty interesting. I don't care for the ones with the kids in the woods, things along those lines. Not finding too many good ones here.. how about Daddy's Home 2?
Chey continues looking through the list of movies.
CJ: The first one was pretty funny. Love me some Will Ferrell. My favorites have always been Talladega Nights and Anchor Man.
CJ laughs thinking back to some of those movies. As a fan of slapstick, he's seen most.
Chey: Daddy's Home 2 it is then. I have popcorn and soda, so we should be all set.
CJ: Did you really just say “soda”?
CJ shakes his head.
CJ: I'm a cold drink man, myself. #JusSayin
He gives her a light tap on the arm.
Chey: Where I'm from, it's “soda” but anyway, what type of “cold drink” you like?
She makes a silly face at him as she puts air quotes around cold drink. He laughs.
CJ: I don't drink ‘em much, but lately I've been drinking Coke Life. It has cane sugar instead of corn syrup. Not being in the gym as much as I'm used to the past couple years makes me a little more cautious of what I let enter my body. But… I don't really have to explain that to a trainer, now do I?
He smiles slightly.
CJ: Thank you.
Chey: Right, I actually drink lots of water. I like other drinks, but I don't drink them often. I've tried Coke Life, it's pretty good. By the way, thank me for what?
She turns to him, with a slight look of confusion on her face. CJ somewhat wishes he wasn't on the interstate because he knows he's about to give another blush statement.
CJ: I thank you because it feels good to laugh and smile after so long without either.
He takes a quick glance anyway, since cruise control is on, and they are on a straight stretch of highway. Chey smiles and looks down, trying to hide her blushing cheeks.
Chey: That's really sweet of you to say, and I could say the same thing. I'm glad that I can make you smile. That's what friends are for, right?
The question brings back the conversation Chey said she had with Serenity about the way Avery's wife said “friends,” which makes CJ wonder if there is intent behind that. For now, he doesn't pursue that avenue.
CJ: Sweet or nah, I wasn't spittin’ game. I was being truthful, and I really appreciate that we have that kinda connection,or chemistry, as it was put to me earlier.
Instead, he throws out a word that was used to him earlier in his conversation with Miles to redirect.
Chey: So, you feel that chemistry too?
She's now looking at him, both wanting to hear his response and not wanting to.
CJ: Earlier, I guess I could say I was either oblivious or —honestly— not looking at it that way. With time to absorb things, #IdBookIt.
He smirks to himself, knowing full well the phrase is one Cheyenne has no clue about. It does bring back things for CJ and his past run. It makes him wonder about the friends that he has lost contact with in recent years, especially those pivotal in his successful first run in NGW.
Chey smiles at his response.
Chey: I hear ya, I mean, I don't know what #IdBookIt means, but.. I gotcha.
CJ: It's just something someone I know used to say. I just mean that I can see it. More so, I can feel it.
Uh-oh, that wasn't supposed to come out so forward. Saying that turns CJ quiet for a moment, not knowing how his words will be taken or where that puts things.
CJ's words made Chey blush, yet again. She turns her face to look out her window. She feels herself getting in her feelings. What he just said has her lost in thought. She'd really like to pursue a relationship, but she knows of his past now. She doesn't want to make things awkward or put any pressure on him. She sits there quietly, thinking and smiling.
CJ notices the wheels turning and does what he does and turns to an opportunity at comedy revenge.
CJ: What's the matter, Ms. Rae? Dat cat done stole your tongue nah?
Chey: Haha, very funny.
She smiles, still looking away.
Chey: I'm just thinking.
CJ: I noticed. Mind if I pry? Or should I stay in my lane?
Chey: I don't mind. I'm thinking about you. I know you've been through so much. I'm not hinting around at anything, I just want you to know.. I'm here. I've been through a lot myself. I know how important it is to have someone being there for you when you need them most. So.. I'm just sayin, you should have someone to be there for you. I want to be that someone.
That reply wasn't what CJ expected. It's very clear she has been offering to “be there for him” as she's made mention of it several times. In this instance, it's a bit more personal. As his mind wanders, he sees and takes the Atlanta exit to get to Chey's.
CJ: I see. Not to change the subject, but where da Box at around here?
Chey: It's actually not too far from my place. You'll see it when we get closer. It's on your side can't miss it.
CJ: Aight, so I'll drive and look and try not to get us killed in this crazy traffic. Gotcha.
He sticks his tongue out at her.
CJ: If you sittin’ there thinking about me and are gonna try to be good, maybe I shouldn't stick my tongue out at you.
He smirks.
Chey: Since I'm going to try to be good, I'm going to keep my comments to myself about your tongue.
CJ: Uh, yeah. So, about what you were saying. Thank you again. I'm glad to have someone so willing to be there for me knowing all I have been through. I'm not gonna ask what you've been through unless you wanna divulge. No pressure. I do appreciate you and what you said.
He takes a moment to brush his hand against hers, lightly rubbing the top of her hand with his.
Chey: Tell ya what, I'll go into some detail on my past, at our next sleepover.
She says this while looking at his hand touching hers.
CJ: You're quite the forward one, aren't you? I kinda like that.
He notices her looking at the hand rubbing and decides to pull a Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction on her.
CJ: Oh, I'm sorry. Did I break your concentration?
Of course, he once again smirks. Then, he notices the unnoticeable Redbox “on his side” and gets set to turn after the stop light turns green.
Chey: Nope, not breaking my concentration at all. But yeah, I am pretty upfront usually. There's a reason for that though. I haven't always been this way. It's just something that's happened over time.
CJ: We all change some things based upon life experiences. I was a psych major, by the way. Now, if that doesn't scare you off, I don't know what will.
He laughs and pulls into the parking lot of the Walgreens and up to their double Redbox kiosk. The flashy convertible gathers some looks from a few people walking out of the drug store.
Chey: Nothing you can say will scare me off. Now, let's get this movie and head to my place and see if my “OCD” will scare YOU off.
Chey smiles as they are getting out of the car.
Several minutes pass and they get back into the car, movie in hand. As they make their way to her house, Chey can't help but wonder what will happen. She wonders how the night will go. It's been a long day for them both and it's already pretty late.
Chey: So, when we get to my place, go ahead and pull your car into the double garage next to mine. Also, feel free to make yourself at home. You can stay in the guest room, or the living room if you prefer. I sometimes pass out watching movies in the living room, the couch is very comfy.
Chey gives CJ a wink as she says that. She likes joking around with him while also just being herself. And with that thought, she realizes they are pulling up to her home.
Chey: Well, here we are. Home at last. It's definitely been a long day. Good food with good people, but I'm glad to be home.
CJ: I definitely agree that it will be nice to stretch out and relax.
They get out of his car and walk up to the door. She is fiddling around looking for her house keys. Once she finds them, she unlocks the door, and they walk inside.
Chey: Home sweet home. I'll grab us the snacks and drinks.. You can go ahead and set up the movie.. Living room is just through that hallway there.
CJ: So, uh… How big is this “comfy” couch I assume we finna share?
Chey walks into her kitchen as CJ heads to the living room. When he walks in, he sees two large couches, and several book shelves against a wall. He walks over to the entertainment area and looks around the 65" LED smart TV, he finally locates the DVD player and pops the movie in. The living room is extremely neat and very well organized. CJ notices how well kept everything is. Just then, Chey walks in with a large bowl filled with popcorn, a Coke life for CJ and a cold bottle of water for herself.
As Chey is setting down their snack and drinks on the coffee table, she's thinking about the question he asked her. She does want to sit with him on the couch.
Chey: So, I guess we should sit down now..
She walks over to the dimmer to lower the lighting. She's never felt quite this nervous before. She makes her way back over to the couch where CJ has already made himself comfortable.
CJ: You can sit down. I usually don't bite…
He smiles to try to help alleviate what he senses as her being a little off from her normal confidence.
Chey sits on the couch next to CJ. She sits back up to grab the popcorn bowl, and the remote for the DVD player. It takes her a minute, but she regains her self confidence and sits herself closer to him.
Chey: Is this good? I mean, I can move away.. Or closer..
She smiles at him and for the first time, stares deep into his eyes. As she is sitting there, she thinks about the pain he must have endured in past relationships. She thinks about how she, too, has endured so much pain from others. She knows one of the hardest things to do is let your guard down, and let someone else into your heart.
Chey: Yaknow, I think I should sit a little closer.
She cuddles up next to him, grabbing hold of his hand. The lights are low, she starts the movie. She thinks to herself "this feels so right". She looks up at him to try to read his thoughts as the screen fades to black.
