Oh brother, I can't, I can't get through
I've been trying hard to reach you, cause I don't know what to do
Oh brother, I can't believe it's true
I'm so scared about the future, and I wanna talk to you
Oh, I wanna talk to you
You can take a picture of something you see
In the future where will I be?
You can climb a ladder up to the sun
Or write a song nobody has sung
Or do something that's never been done

“Hey, Remi…”
Anyone who is familiar with the formula for these video packages put together by the Adam Sanders team is probably caught off guard at this second. It’s almost become an automatic expectation when you click on the video. One surmises that they open it with and see the spiked hair of Eddie Walker with Adam casually hanging out in the background as his manager delivers the promotion of his upcoming match.
This is why Adam standing alone on camera is a bit of a curveball. No Eddie Walker. No Adrien Cochrane. Not even an Izzy Roxx or a Melina Garrison to speak on his behalf. Only the awkward twenty-four-year-old Michigan native stands on camera. He’s standing outside his beat-up green 2001 Chevy Metro. The sun is setting as it is getting close to time for the show where he is pitted against one of his closest friends on the roster, Remi Fontaine.
“Well, this is the big match, right? Friend versus friend, right? The match where we step into the ring, prepared to show who is the better wrestler at this current stage in our careers. Might not be the end result of what we become a few years from now, but it will be a good gauge of where we are. You mention that I have the headstart. Maybe. I did start my career a little bit before you. But you are the one with the pedigree. I just happened to get caught in the tide that brought my ex-girlfriend Kenzie Rydell to Adrien Cochrane’s doorstep. Because that’s how this all started, honestly. I just happened to be dating someone who was already wrestling and determined to become the student of the Dropkick King.
“This all happened because I was there at the right place at the right time.”
The recollection of how his career even got started makes Adam stare upwards for a moment. He’s wearing a “This Is Awkward” t-shirt like he will most likely wear to the ring later tonight. Of course, the blue jeans he is donning won’t make their ring debut as he will probably be in his usual black pants that have a bit more flexibility for actually performing wrestling moves. His brown hair is just long enough to dance with the Sacramento breeze, a weak gust every few minutes catching it and making it flutter for a moment. The sky behind him is painted different shades of pink and orange.
“It took a path of its own after that day. Adrien remembered me from all the shows I sat in the front row of Section B in EXODUS Pro. I was there when #Believe got started and was one of the first people to own the shirt. I watched him beat Heather Halliwell for the EXODUS Pro World Heavyweight Title when Chris Marks, Zero McHannon, and Edward Nair did absolutely everything they could to stop him. I always believed in him as a fan. So he told me that he was going to believe in me as his student. I was got my foot in the door because of proximity.
“You, however, were born into this. Your Aunt Xaria was literally in the parent company to West Coast Genesis. You have so many connections in this industry. I got in because I just happened to be in the right circle at the right time and was blessed with a mentor who was so invested in me. And now he’s extending this to you.
“In a way, I have the jump. In the eyes of Adrien, this match has one big purpose: evaluating you. He wants to see what you are capable of against his own student. He’s going to probably ask me a lot of questions about how I felt you did in the match, extremely detailed about how he can turn you into a champion and a future star. Of course, this doesn’t mean he’s ignoring me. He’s probably going to ask you the same questions. After all, we’re a team, Remi. We’re going to be a good team too, Remi, because we have someone who is going to give it everything he’s got to make sure we succeed. For so long, it’s been a small coaching tree. You have Adrien then it’s me and Kenzie after that. Of course, you have Ryan Corey above Adrien, but that’s not important right now. It will be cool to have another branch on this tree, especially since the other branch is literally my ex-girlfriend.
“Honestly, it’s nice to have someone I feel like I can step into a practice ring with other than Kenzie, Adrien, and Izzy. The beginning parts of this team have given even little timid Adam some confidence. And this match? It’s not some sort of battle of harsh enemies ready to murder one another. This is two friends, prepared to test their skills, and help one another get even better. Giving us an official match with a bell and a referee is a good way to motivate us to give one another our all, something we might not otherwise do in a practice ring. The end result? It doesn’t matter. If I win, great. If you win, great.
“I’m going to try to win, don’t get me wrong. It would be a good showcase what the training of the Dropkick King can do to a weird kid with a Master’s Degree in Telecommunications from Michigan who just happened to watch him wrestle when I was attending the University of California San Diego. It will show the world that once you are taken under his wing, great things could happen to you too. That whole bit about you not winning a championship yet? That’s coming. Look what he did to me. I never EVER thought I would win any championship in any wrestling company. But I did. If I can do it, you can do it too. I know you can. And I’m going to help you get there. When we square off against one another, I’m going to do my best to push you to limits you didn’t know you had. In a way, I think it will be...awkwardly awesome…”
Adam gives a faint smile as he says the name of his tag team with Remi before the camera fades to black.
Are you lost or incomplete?
Do you feel like a puzzle, you can't find your missing piece?
Tell me how do you feel
Well, I feel like they're talking in a language I don't speak
And they're talking it to me
So you take a picture of something you see
In the future where will I be?
You can climb a ladder up to the sun
Or write a song nobody has sung
Or do something that's never been done
Do something that's never been done
So you don't know where you're going, and you wanna talk
And you feel like you're going where you've been before
You tell anyone who'll listen but you feel ignored
Nothing's really making any sense at all
Let's talk, let's ta-a-alk
Let's talk, let's ta-a-alk
