REMI FONTAINE
Chapter 1-5: Hello, Frienemy!
West Coast Genesis Hype 011 Vs. Adam Sanders
First Person View: Remi Fontaine!
“Santa Monica sunsets are gorgeous.”
It’s Friday evening, the night before the eleventh episode of WCG’s Hype, and I’m relaxing on the Santa Monica Pier. Rather than record the bright and colorful lights of the park, I’ve got my camera set on the tripod and focused towards the sunset. My deft fingers adjust the settings of the camera to fully embrace the evening sky.
“You can’t get a beautiful sight like this in Brooklyn,” I chuckle softly. “Ever since I’ve moved here, I’ve been able to enjoy this wonderful sight every night. Jesse and I can see it from our apartment, but sometimes we walk down here and just…”
He takes a slow, deep breath and lets it out slowly. “Breathe it in. The smells of salt water, freshly popped popcorn, and newly spun cotton candy. Seems childish, doesn’t it? But to me, this is paradise. Whenever I’m here, I can forget about my worries… Of course, it’s the start of spring break and I’m loving every second of it. After six, I repeat, SIX midterms, I have every right to say I earned this.”
Behind the camera, I stretch my limbs and let out an audible, content yawn. “Phew… You’ll have to excuse me, I don’t get a lot of sleep during midterms or finals. The stress levels of working on something that’s worth at least fifty percent of your entire grade… It makes or breaks a student. In some way, I can apply that to wrestling in West Coast Genesis. We’re all students here, we’re learning the tricks of the trade, and we’re being observed by New Generation Wrestling scouts. The difference between the scouts and the exams is the scouts are always watching. This isn’t a case of “midterms week” or “finals week”. We’re tested every single time we train at the WCG Gym. We’re scored every time we wrestle on Unscripted, Hype, or one of the major Crossroad shows. Devlin Scott, Amber Richards, and Mercedes Carter-almost-Blackwell are keeping a watchful eye on our performances.”
I move around to stand in front of the camera and fold my arms. There’s a deep look of contemplation on my face. “When I compare and contrast like this…” I raise an eyebrow. “...wrestling is a lot harder than studying for college-level exams. That’s probably because I’ve always been more of a book-smart kid, but y’know, making the changes. That’s something you’ve had to do, right Adam?”
Saying his name makes me smile. It’s a friendly thing, trust me. “You graduated from UCSD with a Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications. I’ve got my educational sights set on an Associate of Arts degree in Ethnic Studies. Yet for some reason, we’re working on becoming professional wrestlers… Kinda funny how that works, huh?” I can’t help but flash a big grin. “We’re willing to tackle a dangerous sport with some quasi-psychotic wrestlers for peers and we don’t think twice about it. Pretty crazy stuff. You’re one of the protégés of Adrien Cochrane, the Dropkick King and one of the greatest veterans in this business. I’m the protégé of Tyberius King, formerly known as Prince Wadjethotep, and to this day, both men are still making a name for themselves. With that said there’s not much of a difference between us. We’re both nerdy and we share some of the same interests.”
Casually, I unfold my arms and shrug my shoulders. “As far as our differences, besides the obvious fact that you’re a former WCG Long Beach Champion and I’ve never been a champion… ever, I guess our social statuses are on near-opposite sides of the spectrum. You’re shy and awkward. You admit that. I’m eccentric and loud. I won’t lie. Your confidence could use some work and you tend to let others speak on your behalf. Me? I’m pretty confident for the most part. As you can see, I’m talking in front of the camera. No edits. No revision. Just raw footage of who I am, what I do, and how I’m gonna execute.”
I turn towards the sunset and step to the side, keeping the visual for everyone to see. Taking a deep breath, I place a hand on my hip and look out from the pier. The noises of the Pacific Park fall in the background while I continue to speak. “Adam, we’re friends and future tag partners, but tomorrow night on Hype, we’re opponents. Some may believe that this industry is cruel… Come on, let’s be honest. No matter who you are, if you wrestle in the same company as your friends, family, or loved ones, you’re bound to face each other in the ring. There’s no if’s, and’s, or but’s about it. You just gotta deal with it. In some aspects, that may suck, but… It’s what we gotta do. We’re aspiring professional wrestlers, right? You faced your own girlfriend, Izzy Roxx. Sure, it was hard to lose the Long Beach championship to her, but you got through it together. I’m sure when Mr. and Mrs. Bosch face each other in the near future, they’ll get through it too.” I look over my shoulder towards the camera and smirk.
“And yeah… now that my boyfriend Jesse’s in WCG, chances are I’ll have to face him too. I’m okay with that. I’m sure he is too.” I turn my body halfway towards the camera and nod. “Between you and me, Adam, this match is nothing personal, just business, and it stays that way. If you think about it, we’ll be scouting each other in the ring, figuring out the other’s strengths and weaknesses, and we’ll work out the kinks once we start teaming up for the Tag Team Trials next month. This match should be pretty educational, right?!”
Flashing a big grin, I turn to face the camera, but my eyes are on the Pacific Park. The lights are reflecting in my bright blue eyes and I place my other hand on my hip as well. “But that’s tomorrow. This is the beginning of spring break… and I’m gonna enjoy this as much as I can.” My eyes lower to the camera for a moment and I throw up a peace sign with my right hand. “I’ll see you in Sacramento, Adam. I’m gonna have some fun!” I don’t hesitate to run past the camera in the direction of the amusement park.
Of course, I backpedal to quietly shut the camera off and pack it up. Haha, I wasn’t gonna leave it behind!
