“Conflict of Interest”
Opening Thoughts
Jazmyn Rain: I knew that winning the Five Lakes Championship wasn’t going to be so easy, but I had no idea that doing so would be so damn difficult. I came to NGW last summer to BE the Five Lakes Champion, simple as that. My introductory sit down interview with Hannah Lacey where I was so excited to be part of the roster and so determined to save the Five Lakes Championship… then the Redemption New Generation Championship… from Caroline O’Hara Birchill… seems like a distant memory at this point. Don’t get me wrong: the passion and the determination is still there. And you can bet that I’m still excited about NGW as a whole. But the fact of the matter is…
That distant memory seems like a BETTER memory right about now. I can’t help but think back to what was an easier time, but that’s my natural inclination especially in light of what happened at Dissension. To say that the last two weeks have been a whirlwind would be an understatement right about now. Hell, this entire journey has been pretty much that. Between the Guardians-Destroyers war, words from other wrestlers, the grind from wrestling between two companies among other things, it’s been a long, winding road for the last eight months and I still haven’t gotten that championship. For one reason or another, whenever I get close, something seems to go haywire. Two weeks ago, I suffered various injuries to my left arm: a bruised clavicle, a triceps contusion and a shoulder strain and now I may not even compete at Battle For London at all.
See what I mean by haywire?
I lost count of how many doctors I went to while I had to wear that sling that was on my arm for over a week. I wasn’t ready to give up knowing that all I needed was ONE doctor to clear me and I’d be fine. But doctor after doctor said it would take four weeks to heal and not too. So… I had one doctor left: my fiance! Derek is part of the GCW medical staff, but I knew that even he clearing me would do. Of course, whirlwinds come at you at the least expected time…
Date: March 22, 2018
Jazmyn Rain is back in the United States… in this case, Columbus, Ohio, gearing up for GCW’s next Livewire event. Fortunately for her though, she’s not booked to compete in a match this week as she was almost certainly going to miss that match had that been the case. She walks down the hallway of the hotel that she’s staying at with her left arm in her sling. The sling doesn’t detract from her appearance as she’s wearing a short, red dress with matching heels and her hair is wavy and flowing nicely. The sling also doesn’t detract from her determination as she carries a folder in her right hand. She’s all business as she walks toward the hotel room that she’s approaching. Once she gets there, she knocks on the door and patiently waits. Taking a deep breath, the door opens and Derek, her fiance, stands in front of her.
Derek: Jazmyn? I wasn’t expecting you tonight.
Jazmyn: Well… um… surprise?
Jazmyn nervously laughs.
Derek: Hey, you know I don’t mind seeing you, ever!
Derek stands aside, allowing Jazmyn to walk in without the need to be asked. Jazmyn finds a counter and places the folder down. Derek sees the folder and he’s immediately curious.
Derek: What’s that you got there?
Jazmyn: Medical stuff… you know… for my arm?
Jazmyn sighs as she looks at her left arm with a slightly sad demeanor. Derek sees how sad she is and he chooses to comfort her by pulling her into a hug, though he’s as gentle as he can be in order to avoid hurting his fiancee.
Derek: Look, it’s going to be alright. Is it doing better?
Jazmyn: Yeah. I mean, it’s a “slowly but surely” deal, but there’s been progress. The thing of it is, I need your help!
Derek: What do you need me to do?
Jazmyn: I need you to clear me for “Battle for London”.
Derek raises his eyebrows.
Derek: Jazmyn, you know I would love to do that but that’s a risky bridge to cross. Wouldn’t it seem like a conflict of interest? What’s NGW going to think if I clear you and they find out? That’s not going to look good at all. I’m sorry, but I really think that this isn’t the best idea. You haven’t seen other doctors first?
Jazmyn: THAT’S why I’m asking for your help, Derek! Nobody wants to clear me! I’ve gotten a second opinion, third opinion… you name it!
Derek: Jazmyn, I’m sorry but I don’t think this is right. I understand it’s frustrating, but I think you should focus on your recovery instead of getting cleared.
Jazmyn’s eyes narrow with some pain as she’s obviously hurt by the fact that her fiance doesn’t even want to take a chance on clearing her. At the moment, she’s as stubborn as she can be. All she is thinking about is getting cleared and being told “no” again and again by doctors has her at a point of near-desperation.
Jazmyn: But…
Derek: Sorry!
Jazmyn: Can you at least look at the files and at least tell me if there’s a chance another doctor can clear me? Please?
Jazmyn gives Derek a bit of a sad, puppy eyes look and Derek sighs, indicating that he’s obliging with at least this much.
Derek: That I CAN do! Let me see what we have here…
Derek walks to the counter to open the folder that Jazmyn brought in with her. The Charlotte native finds a chair and sits on it as she’s anxious to at least hear some good news. Derek takes a few minutes to evaluate what’s in front of him, only taking a brief pause to think about how to word what he needs to tell his future wife. After this, he sorts the files in front of them and puts them back in the folder. He turns toward Jazmyn, who stands up right on sight.
Jazmyn: So?
Derek: Jaz, you’re going to have to bear with me on this, alright? Your tricep and collarbone are going to be fine by the time Battle for London rolls around. The shoulder though… a sprain takes two to four weeks to fully heal. I hate to say it beautiful, but from what I saw, you ended up with the four week injury. It’s not going to heal by Battle for London and unless some miracle recovery happens… NOBODY is going to clear you!
Jazmyn’s eyes widen in shock.
Jazmyn: There HAS to be someone…. ANYONE!
Derek: If someone clears you and you worsen your injury, guess what, that doctor has a malpractice lawsuit in their hands. NOBODY is going to risk their jobs and thousands of dollars over this. I’m sorry Jazmyn, but you’re going to have to wait another month before you get that Five Lakes Title shot.
Jazmyn: A MONTH?!?!?!?
Jazmyn is starting to panic at this point.
Jazmyn: WHY?
Derek: Jazmyn, let’s stay calm, okay? Lest We Forget is after Battle for London, so that’s two more weeks you’re going to have to wait. But, as soon as NGW returns to the states, you’re probably going to get that title shot. It WILL happen, but it’s going to have to wait. It’s only one more month.
Jazmyn: NO!!!!
Derek: Jaz?
Jazmyn: I don’t WANT to wait one more month! You of all people know how much this means to me!
Derek: I do, but…
Jazmyn: I don’t want to hear that word right now, Derek! This is BULLSHIT! This is so UNFAIR!!!! I’ve waited LONG ENOUGH! I’ve been waiting from the beginning to be the Five Lakes Champion in NGW and now you’re telling me that I am going to have to wait another month just to get a shot at it?
Derek: Essentially.... Yes…
Jazmyn: Derek…
Jazmyn’s eyes start to fill up with tears of frustration.
Jazmyn: ...you’re telling me that you don’t believe in me?
Derek: What? No! I’m not saying that at all!
Jazmyn: So why are you telling me it’s going to be another month? You don’t have faith in me at all! You don’t think I can heal fast enough before Battle for London!
Derek: Jazmyn… please don’t take what I said out of context! I never said that I don’t believe in you! OF COURSE I believe in you!
Jazmyn: You believe in me SO MUCH that you won’t even clear me, is that right?
Derek: Jaz… you don’t need to be so sensitive to some words that you’re not putting in the right context. You and I both know how you can get sometimes…
Jazmyn: WHAT DO YOU MEAN “HOW I GET SOMETIMES”!!?!?!??!
Derek: Jaz…
Derek walks up to her to try and comfort her, but with her one good arm, Jazmyn pushes him away.
Jazmyn: Don’t touch me!!!
Derek: You don’t need to be like this…
Jazmyn: Be like WHAT? HUH?
Derek: You’re out of your mind right now!
Jazmyn: OUT OF MY MIND?!??!?! IS THAT WHAT YOU THINK???
Derek: Jaz…
Jazmyn: SHUT UP!!!!!! I’ve had it with you constantly insulting me! It’s bad enough that you don’t believe in me and now you’re calling me crazy! I thought you loved me!!!
Derek: I DO!!!
Jazmyn: DON’T YELL AT ME!!!!
Derek: What do you want me to do then?
Jazmyn: Just… LISTEN TO ME!!!!
Derek: Jazmyn, you don’t need to yell!
Tears begin to stroll down her face at this point.
Derek: I DO believe in you!
Jazmyn: Then why don’t you believe in me at all for Battle for London? All I wanted when I came to see you was for you to believe in me and I can’t even get that much! You’re telling me I won’t heal in time, how is that supposed to make me feel? For EIGHT MONTHS, I have scratched and clawed my way to get that Five Lakes Championship and I’ve had to overcome so much SHIT just to even get close! You will NEVER know what it’s like to go through what I’ve gone through because you’ve never been a wrestler so don’t stand there and fucking JUDGE ME! You BELIEVE in your fiancee, god damn it! When I need you the most, you just up and abandon me? How do you THINK I’m SUPPOSED to feel? SERIOUSLY! I don’t WANT to wait! I’m TIRED of waiting, Derek! I’m TIRED of that piece of SHIT Jack Tillman screwing me over again and again and again: C2 Con…. Homecoming and now Dublin!!!!!
I have ALL this FUCKING weight on my shoulders and sometimes I NEED YOU more than I let on sometimes! And instead of being there for me, you give up on me?!?!?!?!
Derek: Jazmyn… are you listening to yourself right now?
Jazmyn: Are you listening to ME?!?!?!
Derek: I’m trying to understand, but it’s hard to understand when you’re being completely hysterical over this!
Jazmyn: HYSTERICAL??? That’s IT! I’m DONE!!!!
Derek: Jaz!!!
Jazmyn has had enough as she opens the door and walks out of Derek’s room. She tries to bolt down the hallway with Derek following her from behind. Jazmyn is walking so fast she’s paying attention to none of her surroundings and as a result, she trips over her heels and loses them as she begins to fall to the floor. Luckily, Derek was right there to catch her and pull her back up!
Jazmyn: UGH!!!! I HATE YOU!!!
Derek lets her go and Jazmyn manages to stay on her feet.
Derek: Jazmyn, I’m sorry. This was out of nowhere. I can’t find the right words at the moment. I understand you’re frustrated and you’re upset over everything you’ve been through, but you need to stop taking every negative thing to heart! You’re only going to hurt yourself.
Jazmyn: Don’t talk to me Derek! I hate you!!! I hate you for not believing in me!!!!
Jazmyn walks away, apparently not realizing, or caring, that she left her high heels behind. Derek picks them up.
Derek: Jaz…
Jazmyn: NO!!!!!
Before Derek can try to talk sense into her, she’s already turned the corner toward her own hotel room.
Derek: ...you forgot your shoes…
Derek sighs and shakes his head, realizing that he’s not getting through to Jazmyn on this night. He turns back and walks into his room, closing the door and locking it. He places the pair of shoes she accidentally left behind next to the folder she brought then sits down on the bed.
Derek: If only she knew how much it hurts me to see her like that! I believe in her with all my heart… but she needs to do the same and right now? She doesn’t!
Derek reaches into his coat pocket and pulls out his cell phone. He finds a number and dials it, getting an answer on the other end.
Derek: Hello? Yeah Mr. Cabrera, it’s me! I need your help… well… Jazmyn and I need your help…
Derek fills in Jazmyn’s father on the fight that just happened all while hoping Jazmyn finds it within herself to grow as a person to overcome her emotional insecurities before Battle for London.
