Date: March 10, 2018
Julianna DiMaria sits in the locker room about a half an hour after her main event match on Hype against Melina Garrison came to an end. She’s taking everything in and processing the match that just took place. Obviously, the San Diego native is in a more positive mood considering that she finally got the monkey off of her back, but she’s not quite out of the woods yet considering that she’s got a decision to make. While she beat Melina Garrison and earned a promotion to the main roster in New Generation Wrestling in the process, at this point in time, it’s still not a guarantee that she’ll be in NGW at all. Considering her admitted dislike for professional wrestling due to her parents forcing it on her, Julianna has a tough decision on her hands. She stands up and looks at her parents who just walked into the locker room. Their presence, unlike months past, doesn’t draw a cringing reaction from the former West Coast Champion who is clearly over whatever angst was left behind because of them.
Julianna: Hey…
Her mother doesn’t say a word to her initially as she greets her with a hug that Julianna doesn’t mind returning.
Mr. DiMaria: Jules…
Julianna and her father exchange a hug as well.
Julianna steps back slightly to create a fair distance between herself and her parents. After a whirlwind of the last few months, Julianna is internally happy that everything is finally great between her and her parents again. Of course, tonight’s win against Melina Garrison helps that as well, but her win is the last thing that is on her mind at the moment as their conversation begins.
Mrs. DiMaria: You were amazing out there!
Mr. DiMaria: Yeah… you finally got the monkey off of your back! Feels pretty good, doesn’t it?
Julianna lightly chuckles before she responds.
Julianna: Yeah… yeah it does.
Mrs. DiMaria: You no longer have to be burdened from losing to her even more and what’s more than that is the fact that you’re out of WCG and onto the main roster in NGW!
Julianna gives a nervous wince in response to the words that she just heard. Her parents though, pick up on it right away.
Mr. DiMaria: Too soon?
Julianna: Look you guys… thank you very much for the congratulations and the support for winning this match but yeah, I have so much to think about now. Am I happy that I finally beat Melina and no longer have to hear about her beating me? You bet! Is it amazing that I did it with no asterisks at all and that she doesn’t have an excuse for it? Most definitely! And hey… I guess being part of New Generation Wrestling’s main roster is another amazing thing on top of it. But, you two both know how I feel about professional wrestling.
Mrs. DiMaria: But did you have fun, though?
Julianna can’t help but smirk slightly.
Julianna: Yeah… I suppose it was. And I mean this with all due respect, but it was pretty darn nice to be out there wrestling a match without all of that pressure on me for once. But really, I just hope, more than anything, that tonight’s match brings us even closer together. At this point in my life, I am honestly more happy with the fact that we’ve come to an understanding, finally, than I am about anything professional wrestling related. I guess tonight I figured out what was important…
Mr. DiMaria: So what does this mean? Was this your last match?
Julianna slightly winces again.
Mrs. DiMaria: Vincenzo, I think it’s too soon to be asking a question like that. It’s Julianna’s choice at the end of the day whether she wants to continue pursuing this or not.
Mr. DiMaria: Yeah… you’re right.
Julianna: And if you two don’t mind, I would like some time to think about it also. I want to make my decision without your inputs… again… all due respect….
Mr. DiMaria: Well young lady, we did invest a LOT of time and money making this happen for you…
Mrs. DiMaria: Honey, please!
Mr. DiMaria: What, Elise? I figured I had to point that out!
Mrs. DiMaria: It’s Julianna’s life! Stay out of it! Let’s leave her alone, okay?
Mr. DiMaria: But what if she decides that she’s done? Wouldn’t that make our hard work worth nothing?
Mrs. DiMaria: You’re being selfish, Vincenzo!
Mr. DiMaria: SELFISH?
Mrs. DiMaria: You’re thinking about what YOU want, not what Julianna wants.
Mr. DiMaria: I don’t appreciate you saying that, Elise….
Julianna: You GUYS… not here!!!
Julianna’s mother turns toward her.
Mrs. DiMaria: Sorry Julianna, we’ll leave.
Her mother turns and leaves the room, but her father is still going at it as he follows her out.
Mr. DiMaria: Why are you being unreasonable?
Mrs. DiMaria: I’M being unreasonable?
Mr. DiMaria: Twenty-five years and it’s the same shit with you!
Mrs. DiMaria: Fuck you…
Julianna’s eyes widen as their argument continues as they leave. Her father slams the door shut and Julianna can still hear them barking at each other as they walk down the hallway and their conversation fades away. But, before Julianna can react, the door pops open again, enabling Christy and Ally, her two roommates, to walk in.
Christy: It’s safe right?
Julianna nods.
Mrs. DiMaria (from a far distance): YOU WANT TO SAVE FACE BECAUSE FORCING THIS ON HER WAS YOUR IDEA!!!!!!
Ally: Um…
Ally slams the door.
Julianna: ...what’s happening? I’ve never seen my parents fight like this.
Christy: They do this every day at their facil….
Ally covers Christy’s mouth.
Julianna: ...about what?
Mr. DiMaria (from outside): IF SHE LEAVES WRESTLING, IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT!
Mrs. DiMaria (from outside): MY FAULT? IT WAS ALL YOUR IDEA, MUSSOLINI!
Mr. DiMaria (from outside): SHUT THE FUCK UP, WIENER SUCKER!
Mrs. DiMaria (from outside): EXCUSE ME? NO, YOU SHUT UP! CONTROLLING FASCIST PIECE OF SHIT!
Mr. DiMaria (from outside): IMMATURITY ENABLER!
Mrs. DiMaria (from outside): CONTROL FREAK!
Mr. DiMaria (from outside): NAZI!!!!
Julianna’s eyes are still widened in shock and she begins to express concern on her face.
Ally: Julianna, it’s best not to focus on that right now.
Christy: Yeah… we’re… trying to help you with what you decide to do with your life from here.
Julianna: Right… right…
Julianna walks back to the lockers and sits down, likely to put more distance between herself and her arguing parents.
Ally: So, Christy and I have been thinking…
Julianna focuses a bit better as her two roommates approach her.
Christy: We’ve decided that we’re not going to pursue wrestling careers ourselves.
Julianna: Boy, the surprises keep on coming, don’t they?
Ally: Yeah we decided that this isn’t necessarily for us. What we decided to do with our lives is go to college and get a degree in… well… in my case it’s marketing. Christy still needs to decide on her major. But yeah, starting in the fall, we’re both planning on attending the University of San Diego. We’ve got a plan to pay for our room and board. There’s this nice apartment very close to campus that we both want to move to. The problem is, between the two of us, we don’t have enough money to cover expenses.
Christy: Right, and it’s going to take a third person to make that happen. So, we were thinking that if you wanted to leave wrestling behind, you can go to USD with us.
Julianna: Oh… well… that WOULD be an interesting choice….
Christy: Mmhmm… and we both know how much of a passion you have for fashion design! I’m sure you’ll be able to find something there that would cover that!
Julianna: Oh definitely! I had always wanted to be a designer if this professional wrestling thing didn’t work out… though, my parents never knew that.
Ally: Exactly! So, this is your chance to make that happen. So, you want to pitch in and help us move to that new apartment? You want to start a new life on campus with us? We would both LOVE to have you with us. We’re dead serious about that. There’s a life after professional wrestling, Julianna.
Julianna: I know there is! But the thing is… you know… it’s NGW…
Julianna pauses and sighs as she realizes that she has a tough decision on her hands.
Julianna: And after going through the ringer in West Coast Genesis, I’d be passing up a huge opportunity! I mean, think about it! I’d get to travel the world! I’d get to face the best wrestlers in the world and honestly, I have to say it, it felt absolutely amazing to go out there on my own, without pressure from my parents and actually have FUN for a change….especially at Melina Garrison’s expense and everything. But then again… there’s you two… I don’t want to leave you both behind… and I honestly feel that if I left the professional wrestling business, I would miss it.
Julianna sighs again, not knowing what to do with her situation. She’s torn between the two choices that there are in front of her.
Julianna: I can’t pass up the opportunity girls, I’m sorry. I’m going to stay in wrestling and do my thing in NGW.
Christy and Ally look dejected, understandably.
Ally: We understand…
Christy: What are we going to do now though? I mean… we still need a third person…
Julianna: No you don’t, you have me! And I’m getting a HUGE raise at that moving to the main roster and not having to pay for my travel anymore!
Ally: Still… you know… your other passion…
Julianna: Don’t worry, I’m still doing that. I’m going to do both school AND wrestling at the same time… though, travelling the world and all, I’d have to go online for the former. I’m thinking that if something happens with wrestling, or if I get hurt severely or something… I have that at least.
Christy and Ally both have a smile on their faces!
Ally: Hey, it all works out! It’s going to be one hell of a fall, right?
Julianna: You bet!
Julianna takes a sigh of relief, knowing she’s chosen her path at this point.
Julianna: I’ll be right back. I… should tell my parents about this.
Christy: Good luck!
Julianna exchanges a hug with both of her close friends before she leaves the locker room and heads back down the hall. She looks increasingly uncomfortable as she walks into her parents’ continued argument.
Mr. DiMaria: You were supposed to teach her class and dignity and look how that turned out! ENABLER!
Mrs. DiMaria: That would have worked if YOU didn’t make the decision to push her into wrestling!
Julianna: YOU GUYS!!!!!!!
Julianna’s yelling finally stops the argument between her two parents.
Julianna: ENOUGH! I’ve made my decision.
Both of her parents calm down.
Julianna: I’m going to attend the University of San Diego this fall with Ally and Christy…
Mr. DiMaria: ….ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? I’m DONE!!!
Her father turns and begins to walk down the hallway.
Julianna: DAD! Wait, I wasn’t…
Mr. DiMaria: Your mother clearly brainwashed you!
Julianna: But DAD…
Mr. DiMaria: I don’t need to hear anymore… I’m DONE!
Julianna: But…
Mrs. DiMaria: Let him go! Julianna, I respect your decision to leave wrestling.
Julianna: ...I wasn’t even finished, mom! I’m doing the schooling online. I’m doing that AND wrestling at the same time! I’m doing NGW!
Her mother’s eyes light up with happiness and joy.
Mrs. DiMaria: Good for you! I’m so proud of you. You have a safety net just in case NGW doesn’t work out.
But out of that ecstasy, her mother suddenly loses it as tears fall down her face, and they’re not of joy.
Julianna: Mom?
Mrs. DiMaria: Julianna, I’m happy for you it’s just… your father… I can’t… I can’t do this anymore!!!
Julianna can only watch with shock as her mother turns and quickly walks away from the scene in the opposite direction.
Julianna: Mom!
Julianna tries to catch up to her, but Christy and Ally come out of the room to intercept her.
Christy: Julianna, you may want to give her some space.
Ally: Yeah. You’ll find out on your own but… well…
Julianna: My parents’ marriage is collapsing isn’t it?
Christy hugs Julianna and Ally joins in to make it a group hug.
Christy: We’re sorry you had to find out like that…
Julianna: ...what do I do?
Ally: Focus on what’s ahead for you, Julianna: NGW. Let your parents sort that out on their own.
Julianna: You’re right… I should…
The group hug resumes as Julianna begins to think about her future ahead in New Generation Wrestling.
