"When all this first started many people questioned why I was in it…”
Alex slowly looks up as he sits on the stairs outside his home in New York that he shared with his wife Sonja and their newborn son Dylan. His long hair was tied back from his face in a bun as he looked up to the sky, the sun slowly going down in the very late afternoon, or early evening.
“The older veteran, used up and a nobody at age 32. The guy who many questioned if he still had it despite my success in other companies. Despite being a world champion 4 times in the last two years. I walked into the tournament on a bit of a down turn. Even though I’d had great matches against Avery Miles, even though I had wrestled Johnny Maverick while injured, and Jaxon Richards after being beat up, I was still not the man many believed me to be. The Global Cup is where some of the best of the best, some NGW veterans, some new faces, up and comers and legends all get to face off with the winner not only getting a trophy but a shot at the NGW title….”
“My path in this started with John Blade of all people…”
“The man who goes out in front of the world week after week and tells us all who he is going to beat and how. And for some reason is able to use some special, rain man jedi mind trick to get backstage interviewers to forget they’re supposed to be unbiased, and that John Blade has lost an amazing amount of matches, and to say that they hope John wins his match. And the thing is that John Blade has never beat me. He’s a huge man with amazing size but in that ring he gets lost and his heart just doesn’t matter. John lost to me and instead of giving me respect the next week told the world I was a “freak show” and that it was others who wanted me to beat him over him simply...losing…”
“My path in this tournament then got just a little bit harder when I faced Josh Goldstein….”
Alex chuckled and shook his head placing his arms, crossed over across his knees that were pulled up to his chest as the cool spring breeze moved across his front lawn in the northern suburbs of upstate new york.
“I told the world Josh was an underdog with an attitude I respected and could see the great man behind. See Josh is one of those men that people sitting in the crowd and at home can get behind and believe in. Little kids, women and men alike all connect with him. They have all known someone like him, a man who wasn’t blessed with natural physical gifts, a guy who has had to work hard time and time again for everything he got and for him everything was just that little bit harder. Josh put up a fight, Josh showed that heart that I told the world he had but unlike others who had looked passed him before. Like Jack Tillman, I was ready. I was ready for the crowd tro get emotional behind him, I was ready to see the world in his view…”
“And in the end Josh Goldstein fell….”
“In the end the Jew Blazer went out of this tournament in a blaze of glory. And it led me to the next week and my second last challenge…”
“Martin Karloff…”
“Up until the match I am about to have he was the toughest battle for me. Each match I’ve had in the global cup has built, one after another. And Martin was a beast. I knew he would be, I knew it would be a war. He and I both look like greek gods cut from marble and stone, he and I both know ways of hurting each other that are brutal in their deliverance. You saw two men desperate to get to the final in that match. Two warriors ready to lay it all on the line and when the dust had settled I had my hand raised. But I didn’t leave that battle without any scars…”
“The last week or so as I got home I have had to mentally prepare myself for the final. Cause I have to face one of the most decorated and in my humble opinion one of the most underrated wrestlers in this company….”
“Aurora Graves….”
Alex raises an eyebrow and reaches up pulling himself to his feet by the rails on either side. For the first time we see Alex is in a black A day to remember hoodie and jeans. His hands slipping into the front pockets.
“Aurora, as well as Damon and I were in FSociety together, I had faced them before and I had seen them in the ring and out of it and when I signed with NGW I watched in awe noticing they had gotten even better. They were excellent tag team champions and now they have both struck out on their own. I went toe to toe with Damon right before the formation of Rebel Society. He and I beat the hell out of each other and I had more respect for Damon after that match than ever. And now, in the finals of the global cup I get to face who many say is the more talented member of the family. And I dunno maybe it’s true, maybe it isn’t. I don’t like to make comparisons like that cause I had to hear it for years when I was married to Ana….”
“But there’s two things I know for sure about Aurora Graves. One is that she’s drop dead gorgeous. And Two, she’s even more talented than she is gorgeous. And that...well that’s just scary…”
“Aurora had to go through Maria Valadez, Jessica Sears and Mason Moore to get here. Not an easy task at all. Aurora scratched and clawed her way to this final and I know for a fact she will give me her all at Battle for London. But as they said in the movie hit Highlander...there can be only one…”
“The winner of this cup gets a shot at the NGW title and Yujiro Fujiwara took great advantage of it last year. He went on to beat Shields so bad that Matt has never been the same since, and now it’s down to Aurora and me. And I know how good you are Aurora, I don’t doubt you could beat me, but will you?. Which one of us leaves with the trophy?. Which one of us books a title shot?....I’m itching to find out….”
