A Georgia summer, the weather was warm and the playground was the hotspot in elementary school. A young Avery Miles III was climbing the monkey bars as a group of kids discussed whatever the latest toy was.
Girl: No! Grown ups don’t play with toys. They do grown up things. Like work jobs. And drink coffee. And they are mommies and daddies. Right Ave?
Avery falls onto the ground with a small thud, and cocks his head and looks.
Avery: What?
Boy: Grown ups. You know? Like if I had all of their money I would buy so many toys.
Girl: No! You have to buy toys for your kids.
The boy crosses his arms.
Boy: I am not having kids.
Girl: And why not?
Boy: Well, I don’t know.
Avery walks up to the group.
Avery: I am going to have a lot of kids. Twins! For sure.
Girl: Twins? Like a boy and a girl?
He thinks to himself.
Avery: Uh huh!
Boy: Why twins?
Avery: Because they are friends forever then. And they can have each other’s backs. I always wished I had a brother or a sister.
Avery kicks his foot around. The girl throws her arms around him and gives him a hug.
Girl: Oh Ave, you have lots of friends. Plus you got me!
Avery: Thanks Annabelle.
Annabelle: Plus I heard that babies are fun. You can like, dress them up and everything.
Boy: That sounds like a Barbie.
Avery: I guess, sorta?
Annabelle laughs.
Annabelle: Come on, Ave. Let’s do get some fruit snacks!
She takes him by the hand as they head back towards the teacher watching over the playground for their playtime snack.
In Boise, Idaho the Wilson backyard, the Wilson cousins are all gathered together playing. Melina, Sadie, and Serenity are playing house in one corner, as they start up a discussion about babies.
Melina: When I grow up, I’m going to have tons of kids.
Sadie: I am too, at least six.
Serenity rolls her eyes.
Serenity: Six is too many, you won’t be able take care of them idiot.
Sadie looks down, as Melina moves closer to her.
Melina: Well how many are you going to have Serenity?
Serenity: Well… I’m having none. I want no kids. They are gross.
Sadie: No they are not. You are just mean.
Serenity: Shut up, you are only saying that because you want millions of kids, and will never have any.
Melina looks at Serenity, but before she can say anything, Sadie takes off crying, as another cousin comes walking over. It’s Stacy, the younger one.
Stacy: What’s happening?
Serenity: Sadie’s being a whiny baby again.
Stacy: Oh..
Stacy looks at Melina.
Melina: We were talking about babies, and how many we want.
Stacy: I don't want any… I’m too young to have them.
Serenity: Least you’re not saying you want six or more.
Before she can say anything else, they hear their grandma yell for Serenity.
Grandma: SERENITY GET IN THE HOUSE NOW!
Serenity groans.
Serenity: Dang it, she ran to grandma.
Serenity stands up, as she starts walking towards the house. Melina, and Stacy start laughing as they watch her.
Avery has his hand on Serenity’s stomach.
Avery: Oh! I felt a kick!
He smiles.
Serenity: I felt it too. It's so exciting when they do right now. I’m just going to hate when they are moving all the time.
She was smiling, as she places her hand on his hand.
Avery: I still cannot believe it is twins.
He smirks like he knew something.
Avery: I actually got a funny text from Melina the other day. Something to tease you about.
She looks at him.
Serenity: What did Melina have to say? Makes me a little scared now…
He whispers to her as if AJ and Journey could somehow hear.
Avery: That someone didn’t want to be a M-O-M.
He spells it out.
Avery: Even in Elementary school I knew I wanted twins. I wished it. And it happened.
He takes her hand in his and kisses it.
Serenity: She did… well yeah I didn’t want kids. Honestly, I didn’t want any until I married Gabe. I don’t know, just wasn’t something I was into.
She looks down at her stomach, before back up at him.
Serenity: But I am glad I am pregnant with our babies.
He leans forward and places a kiss on her tummy.
Avery: Me too. I guess when you are 9 years old and discussing children, it should be taken into consideration that I wanted to be an actor and an astronaut so dreams are to sometimes to be taken with a grain on salt. But I am glad that things worked out the way they did. Through the pain and hardships. Through bad times, and good. Our souls found each other, and we are bringing two beautiful angels into this world. I thank God everyday for us finding each other. You three are my everything… my world.
He smiles
Avery: I love you, Mrs. Miles.
Serenity: I love you too Mr. Miles.
She leans over, lightly kissing him.
Serenity: Also when I was that young, I was too busy being bad, and not caring about when I was going to be an adult. I just wanted to have fun. I learned eventually to have dreams, and they are all coming true, the moment I met you.
He feels another kick.
Avery: They are sure moving today. Just think, in a short time they will be sleeping upstairs in that freshly painted room. Wide eyed. Knowing nothing but their small world before their eyes. Their precious little fingers grasping at whatever they can. This cannot get better. If I never succeed in wrestling again, or if I just work on a farm. This? This is my true accomplishment in life. You and our babies.
He smiles as she seems him getting choked up. She reaches a hand over, as she places it on his cheek.
Serenity:a It is both of our true accomplishments Ave. I don’t need anything else as long as I have you, and our babies. This is my idea of true happiness, and fulfillment. Nothing else. I know you are the only one I can achieve it with.
She leans in kissing him again, as the kiss breaks from another kick in her belly. She laughs, as he does, as they continue talking, and enjoying the rest of their night.
