Nerd Paladin, Level Up!
File 007: Dignity | 尊厳
“And the NEWWW Spirit and Pride X Champion… ‘The Paladin’, JESSICA SEAAAAAAAARS!”
The live recording comes to life with Jessica’s imitation of a ring announcer and the sound clip of fans cheering and whistling aloud. Wearing the X championship belt around her waist, she takes a bow and dances in her Trigun Vash the Stampede graphic tee, purple skinny jeans, and black fuzzy boots. Her long wavy blonde hair flows with her movements and then she strikes the Vash signature ‘love and peace’ pose, crossing her right hand’s index and middle fingers.
“Love and peace! Love and peace! That’s right, I am the new SAP X Champion and number one contender for the NGW Tag-Team championships with my fellow Guardian of the Galaxy, Adrien Cochrane! Finally, the tables have turned and everything is going wonderfully in my professional wrestling career. Even my personal life is fantastic. That doesn’t happen at the same time very often, so I’m going to embrace it.”
She flashes a bright grin and spins around. The camera’s focus switches to the background for a moment, the beautiful sight of the Trevi Fountain basking in the sunset’s light. Once Jessica faces forward, the camera focuses on her again.
“Tonight, Dissension takes place in Rome, Italy at the beautiful PalaLottomatica where I face off against an upcoming rookie in this industry, Maria Valadez. As you can see, I’m not at the battle arena just yet. Victor and I decided to enjoy the sights of this magnificent city, eat some authentic Italian food with romantic candlelight, and relax. Don’t worry, I’ve been studying and training. I’m not one of those wrestlers who undermines their opponents, dresses their pride with arrogance, and refuses to acknowledge their flaws and losses.”
“That sounds like at least half of the wrestlers in the current generation.”
Victor speaks behind the camera and Jessica nods in agreement.
“...including Ms. Maria Valadez.”
Jessica blinks, surprised by her boyfriend’s response, and she folds her arms in contemplation.
“Hm… you know, that’s kinda true. In fact, Maria reminds me of someone. I have to go way, wayyy back for this comparison. Victor, do you remember Frontier to the Future?”
“I do. It was your official professional wrestling debut on November 1st, 2014. You faced a woman named Aria Hall, or according to her, Aria the Great.”
“...wait, November 1st?”
“Affirmative.”
“But I thought my debut was in September?”
“Not quite. Your first tryout in wrestling was in September. You were apart of the Blazenwing Wrestling Federation on their Crisis TV brand. Rosalyn Fernandez, Darling at the time, was your tag-team partner.”
“Oh, that’s right! Geek Artists! She was Vegeta and I was Goku! Wow, I thought I had this figured out better.”
“You didn’t remember me when we reunited in the Knoxville Wrestling Institute either, Supergirl.”
She sees him wink behind the camera and she… simply pouts.
“I have a photographic memory, not an autobiographical memory. There’s a difference. ANYWAY, Maria reminds me a lot of Aria Hall. She was brand new in professional wrestling. She was kind of an established brawler, but when it came to being a wrestler, it was an entirely different story. She was brash, rude, and arrogant beyond belief. To top it all off, she was a bully. She disrespected me and she insulted my friends and family. It was great to kick her ass and win the match. She was sooo quiet after that.”
There’s the biggest grin on her face before she clears her throat.
“Now let me explain something important, Maria. I have levels when it comes to insults. Nowadays, insulting me is hardly a big deal. Sure there are some things that break through my AC-- that’s Armor Class in Dungeons & Dragons-- but I’m a paladin. Paladins have a D10 hit die for their health points. I’m also like Captain America, Steve Rogers: I can do this all day. Insulting my friends who have the ability to fend for themselves, eh, they’ll be fine. Some of them are even stronger than I am. No worries. On the other hand, insulting my friends who can’t defend themselves is stupid. Just stupid. Insulting my family, whether they can fight for themselves or not, is one of the gravest mistakes a person can ever make. Above all else, family comes first. However, there are two levels that I cannot and will NOT tolerate…
Insulting children and speaking ill of the dead.
You had the audacity to call Martin and Xaria Karloff’s children “bastard kids”. Am I remembering that correctly, Victor?”
“Yes, you are.”
“Maria, THAT is wrong. That is Eliza Valentine-Kingcade-whateverthefuckbitch levels of wrong. Did you really have to stoop to such low levels after losing to Martin on the last Dissension? Did you honestly target Christian, Jacques, and Pénélope, three of the sweetest little kids I’ve met in my life? That I’ve happily volunteered to babysit for when my work schedule isn’t a mess? Yes, your boyfriend Mason Moore made you withdraw your comments, but like so many people have said before, you can’t change the past. What you can do, and what I honestly believe you should do, is sincerely apologize to Mr. and Mrs. Karloff and work to become a better person.
You’re down on your luck. I get that. Your record is two-and-two and you lost your last two matches. Believe me, I’ve been there. In NGW, I’m three-and-three. Our winning percentages are right down the middle. Like every match, I’m giving this match one hundred percent. Hopefully, by tonight, you’ll be able to do the same.
Level up or shut up. Game on.”
