Reputation vs. Character
Date: February 2, 2018
GCW Global Champion Jazmyn Rain is sitting down on a porch overlooking a calm, body of water on a chilly yet tranquil Friday night. Dressed in a blue gown, the number one contender for the Five Lakes Championship is in deep thought. She’s certainly glad that she was able to earn another shot at Jack Tillman and the NGW Five Lakes Championship, but that’s not necessarily what’s on her mind at the moment. She knows that a tough challenge lies ahead in the form of Alan Envy on the upcoming Dissension as well as an upcoming defense of her GCW Global Championship down the line this month. Still, it’s not going to deter the Five Lakes hopeful from saying what she’s got to say and doing what she needs to do and as a result, she takes a small breath before she begins to speak her mind.
Jazmyn Rain: Reputation… it’s what people THINK you are. Let’s take a look at Jack Tillman for a second, shall we? Jack Tillman is seen as a wrestleholic travelling all around the world with a reputation of being one of the best pure wrestlers today. But what about me? Oh I’ve heard what’s been said about me. “Drug addict”, right? Someone that “chokes under pressure”? Yeah, does that sound familiar to you all? “Bit player?” Yeah, something like that. But when you apply those phrases to me, that sounds pretty darn ridiculous, doesn’t it? It sounds like some things that the Destroyers would say about me if we’re being honest. Okay, so let’s talk about “reputation” as it applies to my opponent, Alan Envy: worldwide in-ring veteran, a bit of a cult phenomenon, someone that has stepped up and won championships almost everywhere he’s been and someone that’s too big of a name for me to handle, am I right? See, doesn’t that sound ridiculous? I spoke a little bit of Al’s reputation, but I have to say, I was pretty darn disappointed with what I ended up seeing and hearing out of him two weeks ago.
Oh wait, he didn’t cut a promo for that match did he?
I’ll tell you another thing he DIDN’T do and that’s win the gauntlet. No, that was ME! “But Jazmyn, you got lucky” says the critic “you didn’t have to face him in the gauntlet”. “But Jazmyn, your win was a fluke. You were fortunate that you and Joshua Goldstein were the last two entrants. You only went through one person, not two, or three or four”. Somewhere along the way, Tillman and Constantine have had that cross their minds. Anyway, I’ll admit, it would have been more ideal if I had eliminated more than one person or hell, even gone bell to bell the entire way through. But, at the end of the day, I dealt with what was in front of me, that being Joshua, and I pulled through and became the number one contender again. Does this mean that I am going to have the reputation of a “fluke artist” among the critics? Not important. At the end of the day, you want to know what my point is?
Reputation isn’t everything!
And that’s something YOU need to realize, Alan!
Jazmyn pauses for a bit as she taps into the fire, hunger and determination that has become so familiar with the NGW audience.
Jazmyn Rain: So, you think that you’re just going to waltz into our match and Dissension, pick up a win and call it a day, right? Is that what you thought going into the gauntlet? Last time I checked, you missed out on the opportunity after you and Billy Danielson couldn’t keep your fists away from each other and into the ring. Yeah, that’s “reputation” for you, right? That sure helped you against Julianna when you showed up in WCG, didn’t it? You’re even like Jack Tillman in a way. Like him, you hang your hat on wrestling all around the world and you both carry yourselves in ridiculous ways over it. And yet, when I came in, there wasn’t much to go off with me. I admit that my other company, GCW, needs to put themselves out there better, but still, even with one world championship to my name when I came in here, there weren’t many people in the locker room that really knew who the heck I was. So, as a result, I didn’t necessarily come in here with the hype of a Chuck Matthews or a Stacy Sterling. There are so many people in this company that have come here with a bigger welcome wagon than I did. Heck, even Ruby Lance had that bigger welcome wagon but guess what? Did it mean anything?
No!
One can even say that reputation is a myth because at the end of the day, despite having so much of it, those wrestlers that walked into this company with all the hype ended up falling short of it. Stacy? Gone. Chuck? Gone. Gaia Galanos? Anyone know what happened to her? Gone.
And yet, in spite of my lack of “reputation” when I first joined NGW, I’ve managed to carve out a pretty good NGW career so far, I’d say. Heck, back in GCW, I had so many idiots and critics try to besmirch me with names like “drama queen” and a “girl that has no business being Global Champion” and do you want to know where THOSE people ended up? Out of GCW. Some would call it karma for trying to stick a false reputation on me, but c’est la vie. Anyway, you want to know what’s more important than “reputation”, Alan?
CHARACTER
And listening to what YOU had to say, I doubt I’m stretching it when I say that you sir, have LITTLE if ANY of it. While reputation is what you think you are, character is who you REALLY are and the fact that you have gone as far as saying that I’m some “flavor of the month that management gets behind” says that you pretty much don’t pay attention to anything in NGW outside of yourself do you? “Flavor of the month”? No, I’m the NGW rising star of the year. Have you not been paying attention to most of the Destroyers having an obsession with Adrien Cochrane while the other Guardians, including myself, get casted off as “bit players” by Damon Graves? If you ask a fair portion of the roster, I think it’s safe to say that I’m anything BUT a flavor of the month. Hell, I’d be willing to bet anything that I might be the most underrated wrestler on the NGW roster when you truly think about it. But “flavor of the month”? WOW! Hey, can you take your head out of your ass and actually pay attention to what’s going on?
Thanks!
Jazmyn pauses, sighing and rolling her eyes before continuing.
Jazmyn Rain: No seriously, have you even been paying any attention? Jack Tillman has defended the championship twice as far as I know. Albeit, both times he cheated to retain but still. How can you forget that it was just a month ago when I challenged him and he cheated to beat me in what was basically a glorified handicap match? Oh that’s right, not important to you. You’re too good to pay attention to that. You’re too good to know that the cheating that happened is why the gauntlet happened, you know the same gauntlet that I won two weeks ago and that you and Billy got yourselves eliminated from? Apparently, you’re too good to realize that I didn’t get EITHER of my Five Lakes championship opportunities handed to me. I EARNED my first shot by beating Trixie. I EARNED my second chance just two weeks ago winning that gauntlet. You walk in here acting like you’re hot shit… but… well… you’re not. Your ATTITUDE is shit, though it’s more bull shit than hot shit.
Clearly, you’ve let your reputation go so far up your ass that you forgot everything in this business about character. You may have the talent for this, but I doubt you have the passion because if you did, you would know what’s going on around you instead of having a classic case of myopia as you have displayed with the words that have come out of your mouth. Let me give you a brief little run down about me, okay? I don’t take shortcuts. I don’t WANT to be handed anything. Heck, Devlin was about to give me a rematch for the championship for free and I said “no, make me earn it” and again, that’s the gauntlet. I don’t accept anything for free because I know that when I go out there, I am capable of earning it. Do you want to know how I responded to the most devastating loss of my entire career nearly two years back? I responded by making myself a better person and a better wrestler and becoming what I am today. I’m not just some “flavor of the month” that’s going to disappear after “fifteen minutes of fame”, I’m someone that has climbed up the mountain, slowly admittedly, to get to where I am now. Everything I’ve done and learned in this business has led me to NGW and even though I have two world championships to my name, I know the best is yet to come.
THAT… Alan… is CHARACTER: knowing that regardless of your reputation out there, you know you’re not done achieving what needs to be achieved and that you’ve still got work to do.
What YOU are doing is resting on your laurels and acting like you’ve done it all.
And that is what’s not only going to cost you this match this weekend, that could very well be what prevents you from reaching your potential in NGW if you don’t get it together. So go ahead “hot shot”, come into our match thinking you’ve got it made. But the cold hard truth is, when reputation clashes with character… character ALWAYS wins and at the end of the day, that’s exactly what’s going to happen when I walk out of Rome with a victory against you and a statement made to Jack that I can beat anyone in that gauntlet on any given night.
Now that… Alan… is something worth “envying”.
Jazmyn has a brief chuckle to herself as she stands up from the chair she was sitting on and walks away from the scene, confident in her abilities to pull through in her match against Alan Envy.
