Keiji Sugiwara and Antonio Aurelio both walk into the Peach State Wrestling School run by Avery Miles III in Macon, Georgia as Keiji was looking at starting his first day training Tone, as well as getting some training for his return to West Coast Genesis under his belt. Tone had a bag slung over his shoulder, unsure as to what the first day would entail. As they walked in together, they looked up and saw Avery Miles III working with a couple of other talents.
Avery: That right, just like that. Not replicate it. I want you to be able to hit that in your sleep!
He looks over.
Avery: Keiji! Tone!
Keiji takes a moment to observe Avery in action, it was all still pretty new to him,, and every little bit of help would be welcomed at this point. He finally snaps to however, and focuses on Avery's greeting.
Keiji: Avery, what's happening brother!?
Avery heads out of the ring and over towards the two of them.
Avery: Glad to see you in early. And the both of you coming together? Glad you two are hitting it off. You both ready to get some training under your belt? And for you, Keiji… taking that first step. You know, Alechs trained under me as he trained Honey. Trial by fire. It is something I am happy to employ here.
Keiji takes a deep breath, not really sure he was ready to actually train anyone else. But, he quickly pushes that thought out of his mind, and shows his usual confidence. He clasps a hand on Avery's shoulder, and flashes a smile.
Keiji: Would be lying if I said I was one hundred percent ready for it, but yeah. Trial by fire, like you said. Won't know for certain until I get into it. Just hope this one's ready.
He grins, turning his head towards Tone, and pointing with his thumb confidently. It was almost as if he was issuing a challenge to Tone. Antonio smiles and nods.
Tone: Hey. We both know who my brother is. And if I have half of the confidence and attitude he has, I won’t have one issue. I just… ready am to get over those first few hours nerves. Want to jump in head first and just be ready for whatever is coming my way.
Avery: Good. I like it. Why don’t you go and get changed? Let me talk to Keiji for a moment.
Tone nods and smiles to Keiji, as he heads off towards the locker room. He leaves Avery and Keiji alone.
Avery: You got this. I know its a lot and all new. I have faith. What do you need from me?
Keiji: I don't really know, this is new territory for me. But, doesn't mean I'm going to back down. I think Tone's ready, put it out there like a challenge, and he's golden. Dude doesn't back down from a challenge at all, and that's an excellent sign. Any pointers you could give would be helpful though, no doubt.
Keiji sighs, he really was feeling like a fish out of water. He was ready, but wasn't used to going into an in ring situation this blind. Asking Avery for advice seemed the most logical thing to do at this point.
Avery: Be confident. Make sure to answer all questions for him. And at the end of the day, just do what you think is right. I brought you on for a reason, and I have trust in you. You need to have the same faith in yourself.
He smiles.
Avery: You can take that far ring. And just please be careful. He is green. Think back to how green you were when you started.
Keiji: Oh, very. Got my ass kicked all over the ring, thought having an MMA background would be a help, but this is a whole other animal. Ok, good pep talk, think we're ready.
Keiji smiles, and fist bumps Avery before looking over to the ring and nodding. He starts that way, and patiently waits for Tone to arrive.
Avery heads off to help train some other trainees as Antonio heads back over to Keiji. He was wearing a plain white t-shirt and a pair of long shorts. He also wore a pair of sneakers.
Tone: So… where do you want me?
Keiji looks Tone over, smiling all the while. He then suddenly gets a very serious look on his face, and climbs up onto the apron, and steps between the ropes.
Keiji: Right in here Antonio, I know you're very new, but hey, have to start somewhere. May as well be in here.
Keiji’s smile creeps back, he wasn't very good at acting serious for very long. Antonio heads into the ring and jumps up and down a little.
Tone: Wow. This has more bounce than I thought. This is pretty cool.
He obviously was not fully focused on being serious.
Tone: So…. what do we do first?
Keiji: First thing, let's take a moment to familiarize ourselves with the ring. A big portion of wrestling, is knowing your ring position. You're being pinned, or you're in a submission hold? Knowing where you are, that could be the difference between a loss, or a rope break.
Keiji says the words, but wasn't sure that it would be of much assistance. Still, it was indeed very useful information to have in almost any given match. Tone remains sort of relaxed.
Tone: Corner. Corner. Corner. Corner. Ropes. Ropes. More ropes. And… more ropes.
He laughs.
Keiji: Ok, remember when you asked me not to take it easy on you? That rule still on effect?
Keiji smirks, and cocks an eyebrow. Waiting on an answer from Tone. Tone nods in agreement.
Tone: Yeah. Don’t take it easy. Just because I am…
He looks around.
Tone: Your boyfriend. Don’t be easy with me.
Keiji: Ok, so you think you've properly got a feel for your in ring position then? Be very sure about this.
Keiji begins to pace back and forth, keeping an eye on Tone as he does so. He promised he wouldn't hold back, and he intended to keep that promise. Antonio laughs.
Tone: Yeah. Come on. I am standing in the middle. I mean, it is not rocket science.
He was taking things very lightly.
Keiji: You're in the middle, fair enough.
Keiji grabs Tone by the arm, and launches him towards the ropes. Tone bounces off the ropes, and Keiji catches him with an arm drag on the rebound, which he transitions into an armbar.
Keiji: Ok, if you know your ring positioning this will be easy to get out of.
Tone begins to struggle at first, looking for a way out.
Tone: Ouch. Damn, Keiji. Fuck.
He reaches, and is too far away from the ropes. He reaches out but still is too short.
Tone: Shit. My arm!
Keiji: You're missing something, just relax and you'll be able to get your footing.
Keiji says this, hoping that Tone would take the hint, and put his foot on the rope it was very clearly next to. Tone starts to try and relax, and finally does. He looks and sees his position, holding his arm. He reaches out and puts his foot on the rope.
Tone: There!
Keiji breaks the hold, and gets up to his feet. He nods, and offers his hand to Tone, to help him back to his feet.
Keiji: See what I mean, I set that up to be an easy escape. Had you known your ring positioning, that would have taken you no time at all.
Tone nods.
Tone: Okay. Knowing my position. I got that. I just need to relax. And think.
He exhales.
Keiji: But, I will give you points for not tapping out. That would have gotten you out of the hold as well, but you used your head, and made it out without taking a loss.
Keiji takes a moment, letting Tone regroup, and get his head back into the right place.
Tone: So… what is next?
He looks and sees other trainees taking bumps, Some running the ropes. And some even jumping off of the top of the corner onto a crash mat.
Keiji: We could proceed a number of ways here, first let me ask you this, what would you consider your strongest asset inside of this ring, if you had to take a guess?
Keiji walks over to the corner, and leans back, letting his arms rest on the top ropes.
Tone: I mean… I’ve played sports. So I guess just like.. Stamina? And natural athleticism?
He says in a questionable manner. Keiji pushes out of the corner, and nods.
Keiji: So strength, speed, etcetera. Ok, so that's a plus. You've seen wrestling obviously, so use that, I want you to come at me, I'm going to try to stop you.
Keiji walks to mid ring, and readies himself, he wanted to see just what Tone already knew in terms of technique. Antonio steps at Keiji and puts his hands on him, and awkwardly tries to lock up but it is obvious he has no clue what he is doing.
Keiji; Break, let's work on that lock up. Was a nice try, but the execution was off. You have to commit to the move, really go for it.
Keiji locks up with Tone, doing it a bit slow more to show Tone how it's done. He quickly releases, and goes for it again, but this time goes full speed.
Keiji: Ok, I'm going to release, you think you're ready to try that again Antonio?
He nods. Tone steps forward, and grabs Keiji. This time, he does it harder as his hand comes down and makes a slap sound on Keiji’s skin. Tone jumps back as he realizes he might have hit him too hard.
Keiji: A little better that time, but you bailed on the move at the end. You've got to really commit to it. If this were a real match, that would have been an opening for your opponent to jump all over you.
Keiji looks at Tone, and smiles a little. He knew why he'd bailed, but wasn't about to let him know he knew why, it wouldn't matter if it were the real thing.
Tone: I just thought I hit you too hard…
He worries out loud.
Tone: Um Okay. Here.
He grabs Keiji again, and this time locks up a bit better.
Tone: Like that?
Keiji: Much better, and don't worry if you hit a bit too hard. This is why we're training. I can take it. Now, since you've got me locked up like this, what would your next move be?
Tone: Something where I take you to the ground?
He asks, unsure.
Tone: I really have no clue, Keij.
Keiji: Never be afraid to admit that, you're new. I don't expect you to know a lot. But we'll get you to where I won't even have to ask, you'll just know what to do, for example, there are a few options from this position. Side headlock, wrist lock, but I think we'll try this first.
Keiji transitions into a belly to back position, to see if Tone's ability to escape would come through. A simple back elbow would be enough, but Tone was still very new. Tone freaks out a lot, and swings his body left and right, but does not break out of it.
Tone: Um…. um……
Tone’s instincts kick in and he grabs the arm of Keiji and throws him onto his back.
Keiji: Very nice!
Keiji was honestly quite impressed by this, he'd expected Tone to flail a bit, but he powered his way out of it with very few problems.
Keiji; How'd that feel?
Tone: Did I hurt you? Was everything okay? Did I do good?
He was overly concerned, and wanted to make a good impression on Keiji.
Keiji: I'm fine, and yes, that was good. You're out of the lock, and where exactly am I right now?
Keiji looks up at Tone, and can't help but to smile a little, he didn't even have to tell Tone what to do, he just reacted and it was a good call.
Tone: So react? And just… be ready?
He tries to sum it up.
Tone: What about that bump thing? Isn’t that important?
He was unsure.
Keiji: That's important yes, knowing how to get out of a dangerous situation is as well. But, we covered that. So...I suppose we could try that, of you're up to it.
Keiji gets back to his feet, and takes a deep breath. Trying to psych himself up a bit before going any farther.
Tone: Whatever you think is right. I am following your lead.
He looks at Keiji with a smile.
Keiji: Ok, got to learn it at some point, right? So, we'll start with something easy. A simple shoulder block. Basically, I'm going to hit the ropes, come back, and plant my shoulder right here.
Keiji pats Tone on the upper chest, letting him know where the hit is going to land. Tone nods. He was not sure the methods that Keiji had, but he was going to follow along with him.
Tone: Ready.
Keiji runs at the ropes and hits them. He returns and hit a shoulder block into Tone as he falls backwards and lands hard. He puts his hand out and landed badly on his wrist.
Tone: Ow!
Keiji gets to a knee, and checks on Tone. He looks at the wrist, trying to spot any visible signs of breakage.
Keiji: Think you may have sprained it? Need an ice pack maybe?
Keiji was concerned, the fall looked a bit messy, and he wanted to make sure Tone was alright. Tone moves his wrist, and winces.
Tone: Yeah. It definitely hurts. How was I supposed to take that?
He was not entirely sure as he tries to get up to his feet.
Keiji: You want your back to take most of the impact, you almost had it. Your arms were just a little too far behind. Want to make sure you keep them out to your side, and a little farther out than that.
Keiji gets up, and helps Tone stand, making sure to not grab the bad wrist.
Tone: Maybe we ice it up for now… and then we can learn to just fall first?
Antonio thought that should be the lesson first, but did not want to question Keiji. He knew that Keiji was new to training, and did not want to question his methods or to break down his confidence.
Keiji: Yeah, that's not a bad plan. Besides, don't want to try to overdo it on the first day. We've got plenty of time.
Keiji smiles, Tone sounded like he was starting to get it. Keiji puts his arm around Tone, and walks towards the ropes, letting go of him when the reach. He holds the ropes open open for Tone, trying to make his exit smoother. Tone heads out of the ring as Keiji follows him close behind. Avery sees the two of them making their way out and gives a nod to them as they complete their first day of training.
