"Clearing the Air
Date: December 2, 2017
In the hour after WCG’s latest episode of Hype came to an end, WCG West Coast Champion Julianna DiMaria is walking out of the building that the event took place in La Jolla, not too far from San Diego. There’s a part of her that is happy to finally be rid of the monkey on her back known as Karari Makelah, there’s a part of her that is annoyed with the post-match shenanigans that took place with her and Donovan Basch and there is a part of her that is just outright angry and that is the most prevalent part of her conscience as she remembers the letter that she received from her parents on live television. She enters the parking lot, more than likely just wanting to leave and mind her own business, but she’s frozen in her tracks by practically the last thing she was hoping to hear or see…
Mr. DiMaria: Jules…
Julianna squints her eyes in anger and takes a deep breath to try and compose herself as her parents approach behind her.
Mrs. DiMaria: Can we talk?
Julianna’s deep breath turns into a sigh as she turns around, reluctant to face her parents. Once she meets them face to face, her anger spikes even higher. She’s staring a hole right through them and the expression on her face takers her parents by slight surprise.
Julianna: You two want to talk to me? Like you didn’t embarrass me in front of everyone watching by sending me that letter earlier tonight. One of the first things you said was how I embarrassed, disappointed and disgraced you by losing to Karari to begin with. I’m your DAUGHTER, not a robot. How many times do you two have to hear that before it goes through your thick skulls? Well as you saw, I BEAT HER and kept my title. Am I an embarrassing, disappointing disgrace to you now? Don’t even BOTHER singing my praises because it’s as shallow as your ability to love your own child!
Mr. DiMiria: Jules, you misunderstand…
Julianna: I’M misunderstanding? YOU TWO don’t even KNOW how to love your own daughter! I don’t know what it takes to register that through your heads! Tonight was my chance to redeem myself to the two of you? REALLY?
Mrs. DiMaria: To be fair, that’s exactly what you did. We knew you could beat her all along. Sure, it shouldn’t have taken two tries against a worthless piece of garbage like her, but still…
Julianna: Worthless piece of garbage? Really? Thank god the cameras didn’t catch THAT part because otherwise that would have invalidated my win tonight. Karari is overrated, that much is true. But come on! Here’s the thing though… WHY did I HAVE to even REDEEM MYSELF to the two of you at all? This is MY career…
Mr. DiMaria: That WE made happen.
Julianna: So what the hell are you saying? I OWE you both for all of this? No! I don’t owe you anything except a thank you for training me to do this. Past that, I don’t owe either of you two jack shit! It’s not my fault you both couldn’t crack America when you came here but please… haven’t you two had enough of taking it out on me?
The eyes of both of her parents tell the story as they widen with a bit of shock. Her mother is frozen, unsure of what to say back to her while her father is in disbelief that Julianna just fired back such a hard accusation. Julianna folds her arms with disgust in her heart as she is doing everything she can to stand up to the same two parents who dismissed her as a disgrace after her previous loss to Karari Makelah in the All-Female Invitational tournament earlier in 2017.
Julianna: From the day I was born, you treated me as a wrestler, not as a daughter. And don’t you dare say that wasn’t true because instead of watching cartoons on Saturday mornings, I was watching tapes of the two of you wrestling in Europe! Instead of a dollhouse on Christmas, I’d get a toy wrestling ring. Instead of a Barbie doll, I’d get an action figure of a famous wrestler of the time. You think I was too naive to notice these things? You two never allowed me to be a kid. You never allowed me to have many friends and the sad thing is, you two didn’t teach me how to drive until you taught me how to wrestle. The only “quality time” we ever spent together was going to a local wrestling show in San Diego or when one of the big league companies came to town. That was it. It couldn’t have been a trip to the beach? Or a stroll through the park? Or even a shopping spree at the mall? I’m not saying I don’t love the sport. I do… but GOD… would it have killed you two if I just went to ONE slumber party when I was growing up?
Mr. DiMaria: What the hell are you saying? That we’re the worst parents ever?
Mrs. DiMaria: Because if THAT is what you think Julianna, after all that we’ve done for you… then…
Julianna sighs, cutting off her mother before she could say another word.
Julianna: No, I am NOT saying that you are the worst parents ever. The most workaholic parents, probably. But still, I can’t ever say that you two didn’t do a lot for me. You did. But the one huge mistake that you made was never listening to me and never acting like my feelings were of any priority. The way you treated me after I lost to Karari before was abusive. And now that I beat her, you want to make everything better?
Julianna shakes her head, clearly still disgusted with the situation at hand. Her parents still stand in front of her not knowing what to say or how to react. They look at each other and Julianna is noting a look of remorse on their faces as that’s something that she’s never seen out of them before.
Mrs. DiMaria: Look Julianna…
Her mother takes a deep breath as she tries to respond to what she just heard.
Mrs. DiMaria: About all that… you know… the way we treated you after you lost to Karari. We realizes… your father and I… that we took it too far by saying that your loss was “disrespectful” to us. We were both in the heat of the moment, just in total denial that you lost to someone like that and once we had a chance to breathe from the whole situation, we realized that in our careers, we’ve had plenty of matches where we lost to wrestlers a tier or two below us and we never got reprimanded for it the way we did to you that day.
Mr. DiMaria: we took it personally not because we wanted to be mean to you, but because we love you and we wanted the best for you. I know it’s hard to believe right now Jules, but we always have loved you. You’re our daughter and we want you to be happy. We just… um…
Mrs. DiMaria: Let’s just say that we don’t exactly have a conventional way of showing you our love. We were pretty hard on you, but we wanted to instill an attitude within you that wouldn’t allow you to accept anything less than the best.
Mr. DiMaria: Right. We thought that a normal childhood would have been for the worst and that breeding you to be a wrestler was what was for your benefit.
Julianna: Yet, a normal childhood is what I REALLY wanted.
Mr. DiMaria: Look, let’s just get to the bottom of this, alright? We said some really mean and nasty stuff to you that day and we saw the way your reacted to our letter tonight and well… your mother and I have been re-evaluating. That wasn’t love back then, that was abuse, just like you said.
Mrs. DiMaria: And we’re very sorry, from the bottom of our hearts, that we ever treated you that way. As parents, in that particular moment, we failed you. We were the ones being the disgrace, we were the ones being disrespectful. Not you.
Mr. DiMaria: And it’s gotten us to re-evaluate the way we raised you too…
Julianna is now the one frozen in silence as she doesn’t know how to react to her parents finally realizing her feelings.
Julianna: But that letter you guys sent me tonight… doesn’t that contradict everything you’re telling me right now? If you guys are really sorry, why did you write and send that to me?
Mrs. DiMaria: Well, funny thing… we didn’t actually MEAN any of what we wrote. In fact, we knew it was going to rile you up to the point where you’d be even MORE motivated to beat Karari tonight.
Julianna: Oh for fuck’s sake…
Julianna sighs and shakes her head.
Mr. DiMaria: Now, what was that we were sayin’ earlier about how we have a funny way of showing how much we love you?
Julianna: Fair point…
Julianna rolls her eyes.
Mr. DiMaria: Listen, I know we’re the last people you wanna see right now, but we had to clear the air. The last thing either one of us want is for our own daughter to hate us… although we kinda wouldn’t blame her. On that note, give me a sec. I’ll be right back.
Mr. DiMaria turns and heads away, leaving Julianna alone with her mother for a brief time.
Mrs. DiMaria: By the way, LOVE the attitude you’ve taken on.
Julianna: … really???
Mrs. DiMaria: Oh yeah! You sure know how to make so many people hate your guts. It’s a real work of art. Keep THAT going and you’ll be on the NGW roster in no time!
Julianna doesn’t get to respond as her father returns with a large, party bag.
Mr. DiMaria: Alright, I’m back. And we got ya something for Christmas. You don’t have to look at it right now. Just… whenever you find it in your heart to forgive us… or somethin’ like that…
Julianna: Look guys… thanks but this is just so awkward right now considering that… yeah…
Mrs. DiMaria: You can keep your distance from us as long as you feel like you need to, but you’re not hating us forever… especially since your next title defense IS in San Diego after all..
Mr. DiMaria: The ball’s in your court now. We’ll see you again when you’re ready. For now? We know the best thing for you is to keep our distance and let you do your thing.
Julianna: Exactly. That’s what I want… but I appreciate you guys at least acknowledging how wrong you’ve been,
Julianna’s parents both nod before they finally leave her be, knowing that they’re not going to get an “I love you” or any hugs from her for understandable reasons. A few moments later, Julianna finds herself alone with the party bag that consists of her Christmas gift. She looks at it with skepticism as she struggles with whether to open it or not.
Julianna: I’m not ready to open this right now…
Julianna sighs in relief, knowing that the worst with her parents is finally over. Carrying her Christmas present, she walks to her car, puts the gift in the backseat and then heads inside her car, turning on the ignition and driving off for the night, ready to put the events of Hype and what just happened now, behind her for the time being.
