Little Ysera Amber slumbered peacefully for the first time in her new crib. Standing nearby – hovering, really – was Aurora Graves, who for the life of her just couldn’t bring herself to leave the room. The new family had been home from the hospital for a few hours, most of which were spent with their dog Elune and the cats – Selina and Bruce – cautiously sniffing at the new, strange hairless being that had come to live with them. Aurora knew that in time, they would eventually become accustomed to their new human sibling, but for now, it was time for Aurora to adjust to her new role...
“Mother”
It was a title that she thought – from a young age – she’d never achieve, and in fact, had it not been for the choices of one brave young girl, Aurora probably would still consider to be little more than a pipe dream. Now, it was very real, and the life of another tiny human being rested solely in her hands....
Damon’s Voice: Harley....
The soft whisper of her husband’s voice snapped Aurora out of her reverie. But even as she rested her hands against the top rail of the crib, she glanced over at Damon, smiling at him before returning her gaze to the slumbering creature within.
Aurora: You know, a part of me still can’t believe she’s really here – sleeping in this room.
Damon walked through the doorway, wrapping his arms around his wife’s waist. After a quick kiss on Aurora’s cheek, he too stared down at the sleeping newborn.
Damon: I know how you feel, Harley. And yet there she is. Months of scrutiny, paperwork, waiting... and a LOT of crossed fingers have finally paid off. All that’s left is for the judge to finalize the adoption, and she will officially become a Graves.
Aurora sighed.
Aurora: We’re so close, and yet that one final little formality makes it seem like a lifetime away....
Damon: Trust me, Harley. Soon, it’ll all be official.
He took a deep breath as he stared down at Ysera, her tiny little hand poking out from the long sleeve of her creeper.
Damon: But did you really have to change her out of her homecoming outfit? She looked so adorable in it!
Aurora: Yeah, I know. But she doesn’t need to be sleeping in all of those ruffles. Besides, she dribbled some milk on her shirt. I HAD to change her outfit.
Damon grimaced, running a hand through his hair as he flashed an apologetic smile.
Damon: That was my bad; I didn’t have the burp rag positioned right.
Aurora shook her head.
Aurora: Oh, Puddin’. This is going to be a learning experience for the both of us. But thankfully, we have plenty of people who we can turn to for advice.
Damon: Yeah, between your parents, Alicia and Jason... I say we’ve got a fairly decent support system in place here. Still, I just don’t want to f...
He caught himself before he could finish his sentence, clapping a hand over his mouth. With a child in the house, he knew he needed to be a bit more careful with his words.
Damon: MESS this up. Yeah... that’s what I meant to say.
Aurora smirked.
Aurora: Hmph... yeah, we don’t need her hearing just how foul your mouth can be just yet.
Damon: No more foul than that of her mother!
They both shared a quiet laugh, but abruptly stopped at the sound of Ysera making noises in her sleep. They both turned to her, watching to see if she would wake up. They breathed a collective sigh of relief when she simply settled back down. Damon stepped back, placing a hand on his wife’s shoulder as he tipped his head toward the doorway.
Damon: Come on, Mommy. You don’t want to be known as one of those “helicopter parents” this early in the game, do you? Besides, you haven’t eaten anything since we got her home.
Aurora begrudgingly stepped back from Ysera’s crib, still not wanting to take her eyes off of her as she sighed.
Aurora: Yeah, I suppose you’re right. Just let me grab one thing....
She walked over to Ysera’s dresser, where a portable baby monitor sat on the top. She grabbed it, clipping it to the waistband of her jeans and cranked up the volume as high as it would go. As she and Damon headed for the door, she looked at her husband and smiled.
Aurora: There... now, if she even so much as makes a peep, I’ll hear it.
Damon shook his head, but couldn’t help but chuckle.
Damon: You are absolutely impossible right now, Harley....
Aurora: And here I thought that was one of the things you loved about me....
Damon threw an arm around his wife’s waist, chuckling softly as he guided her through the doorway.
Damon: Move it, Hover-Mom!
Aurora scoffed, playfully elbowing Damon in the ribs as Damon carefully closed the door. As they walked down the hallway, their voices trailed off as they continued their conversation.
Aurora: Hover-Mom? Really? We’ll see how you act when it’s time for Yssie to start dating! I’ll remember this, Mr. Graves....
