Scene opens inside a well-equipped gymnasium/wrestling training facility. Here we find Damon Graves holding a conversation with a tall, muscular Latino man.
Damon: Thanks for letting us use this place while your students have the day off, Sergio.
Sergio: No problem, man. I knew you and your friend would rather not have a bunch of students interrupting you with a bunch of questions…
Damon: True.
While Damon and the gym owner are talking, Avery Miles III arrives, running a few minutes late. Stopping just inside the entrance, he pulls out his cell phone and starts typing. Once he’s done, he puts the phone away and starts looking around. Spotting Damon he heads on over.
Avery: Sorry, I’m late. My flight from Georgia was delayed due to high winds. Sent Serenity a text letting her know I made it here OK.
Damon: No worries, man. Avery, this is Sergio Cueva, Jason’s brother-in-law and owner of this gym. Sergio, this is Avery Miles III…
Sergio and Avery shake hands.
Sergio: Damon was telling me about how you became friends.
Avery: It goes back to when Damon and Aurora were vying for the NGW Tag Team titles…
Damon: For reasons I won’t go into, Avery wound up having to defend them by himself.
Sergio: Ballsy move…
Damon: You gotta respect something like that.
The two of them had been friends for some time; going back to when Avery defended the NGW Tag Team Titles alone against Damon and Aurora in a losing effort. It was an event that earn respect in the Graves’ book. He attended their wedding as well, and has been a friend whether or not they were working together.
Avery takes a few steps inside, and looks around.
Avery: So I was thinking it would be great to branch out some. Get some work in since it has been awhile since we caught up. Plus, you are facing off someone that I unfortunately had some recent issues with. Figured talking a little shop. How are things with you and Aurora? Well?
Damon: Personally? Things are going pretty well. The shop’s booked solid for the next few months. Wrestling wise…..
Damon gives a thumbs down gesture while blowing a raspberry.
Avery: It can't be that bad, Damon.
Damon: Everyone keeps telling me that, but losing so often still sucks.
Avery: Well I know how things can be. Been there. Done that.
Avery circles the ring on one side of the building.
Avery: Maybe mixing things up and doing a little training one-on-one will help. I know that people always saw you are a tag team guy. I know better. I know that you are no joke. Not to be taken lightly. And if Travis is doing that, it will be his own downfall. He is going to know already what I know.
Avery could see that Damon was obviously having his own issues where he was in NGW.
Avery: D. Trust me. I’ve been there.
Damon: Part of me realizes that this slump can't last forever, but there's another part that's too damned impatient…
Avery: Try not to overthink the situation. All that'll do is make things worse.
Damon: Fine. Switching subject, how are things going for your match at Warfare?
Avery: Won't lie to you, D. On paper, we're behind the ball, but I have faith in my partners…
Damon: So, who's your fourth member?
Avery chuckles.
Avery: Sorry, bud, but you're going to have to wait just like everybody else…
Damon nods as he realizes that there must be a damn good secret. Both men climb into the ring and lock up. Damon takes control and shoots Avery off into the ropes. The strength advantage went to Damon as both men stare down.
Avery: Last time it was two-on-one. Now? You versus me, D.
Avery smirks as he charges for Damon. The two men clash as Damon takes control. He brings Avery up and over with a back body drop. Avery hits the mat, and pops back up. He jumps up and twists, sending Damon into the mat with a DDT. Avery rolls back up to his feet and is met with an ultra fast Damon getting his boot up and driving it into the side of Avery’s head. Both men back off for a second offering another staredown as they jump in head first into their training.
