“The Point of No Return: Part 2”
Date: November 28, 2017
Continued from last time…
Christy: They didn’t beat you, did they?
Julianna’s tears flow down her face, wiping them away as she shakes her head.
Julianna: They were never those kinds of parents. I have no explanation for it really. A large part of why I feel the way I do about that loss to HER is how my parents reacted to it. If you didn’t know them well enough, you’d almost swear that you violated their livelihood or something.
Julianna pauses, trying to get the story straight in her head. This is really the first time she’s opened up so candidly about her AFI loss to Karari Makelah, a loss that obviously still haunts her to this very day despite it happening four and a half months ago.
Ally: Well, if it’s any consolation…
Julianna: Consolation is the last thing I even want to hear about right now. What silver linings do you have besides “at least she didn’t win the whole thing”, “at least you’re West Coast Champion now” among other things could you possibly have?
Christy: Well, I know the loss was devastating and all but still…
Julianna: Devastating is an understatement.
Ally: True, but she hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire in WCG since she first signed there.
Julianna: And you don’t think that’s the perfect scenario for the same thing to happen again? For it to happen ONCE was brutal enough. For it to happen AGAIN, AND to lose a championship that means the world to me to HER? I don’t think I could ever live with myself if that happened.
Christy: Damn… you really DO hate that woman.
Julianna: After what losing to her put me through, how could I not?
Ally: So what happened… you know… after the fact. What exactly went down with your parents?
Julianna: I really shouldn’t….
Julianna pauses and sighs, wiping away more tears from her eyes.
Julianna: But I have to be strong about this…
Julianna sighs again.
Julianna: Okay so…
Flashback…
Event: AFI Third Round, post-match
There is a cold, dead, tense air in the locker room after Julianna’s loss to Karari Makelah in the sweet sixteen of the All-Female Invitational. Julianna is just hanging her head, letting all of the humiliation flood her conscience as if it was just struck by a hurricane. Her parents being in the room with her is about to make this even worse.
Mrs. DiMaria: I just… I….
Julianna’s mother is at a loss for words at the moment.
Mr. DiMaria: HOW???
Mrs. DiMaria: This doesn’t make any sense. All the days’ hours, and weeks and years we put into your training and you lose to THAT?
Mr. DiMaria: There’s got to be some explanation for this. Were you distracted by something? Was your head just not in the game? What was it, Jules? Look at me.
Julianna doesn’t respond knowing pretty damn well that her parents are upset with her.
Mr. DiMaria: LOOK AT ME!
Julianna cringes a bit and she looks up at both of her angry parents who are making it quite obvious how disappointed they are in her at this very cold moment.
Mr. DiMaria: What happened?
Julianna: I… I don’t… I don’t know…
Mrs. DiMaria: Well, your father and I know what happened. You lost.
Julianna: I know but…
Mr. DiMaria: But nothing. I don’t understand how someone that has beaten wrestlers like Jack Tillman and Ashley Marie Chase loses to someone like… what’s her name again? Karari Makelah.
Mrs. DiMaria: WHO?
Mr. DiMaria: EXACTLY! How the fuck can this happen, Jules? HOW?
Julianna: I don’t… I…
Mr. DiMaria: TELL ME!
Julianna: It just DID! I don’t know what else to say. I’m just as gutted about this as you are. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to let you guys down.
Mr. DiMaria: Oh you let us down young lady, let’s not sugar coat that.
Mrs. DiMaria: You let us down big time, that’s precisely what you did. Of all the losses you’ve had in your career, this is by far the most disgraceful one of all. YOU, a West Coast Championship contender, a semifinalist in the Super Falcon Cup… lose to HER? I’ve never even HEARD of her before the tournament began. You have no business losing to someone like that and yet, you did. If you can’t explain to us how, then maybe your father and I should be reevaluating something.
Mr. DiMaria: Yeah… I mean… what you did out there was pretty disrespectful, I’m not gonna lie.
Julianna: WHAT? Disrespectful? Oh my god, you two are taking this personally!
Mrs. DiMaria: Why wouldn’t we? We spent all this time on you so you can go out there and do what we never got the chance to do in the wrestling world, we gave you everything we could possibly could and you repay us by losing matches to people like THAT?
Mr. DiMaria: This ain’t gonna fly Jules. There’s no way we can let this slide.
Julianna looks at them with a stunned look on her face. Losing to Karari was certainly bad enough but the wrath of her parents is something she had never expected and clearly never wanted. She’s frozen, being completely unsure of what to say. The fact that they took HER loss personally strikes a fear in her that she has rarely ever had to experience.
Julianna: You guys are acting like my loss is YOUR loss…
Mrs. DiMaria: That’s because it is. You are a disgrace to everything we ever built for you.
Mr. DiMaria: Yeah. Maybe you’re not so cut out for this after all.
Julianna: WHAT? Excuse me?!?!?! I’m the one doing what YOU TWO were NEVER capable of doing. Neither one of you ever broke the American mainstream scene whereas I did! How can you both just stand there and criticize me? If I’m THAT much of a disgrace, maybe you two should both look in the mirror and think about something that maybe YOU did wrong with me.
Mrs. DiMaria: Julianna, we didn’t do anything wrong. We were absolutely as perfect as we could be when it came to raising you and training you.
Mr. DiMaria: Yeah Jules, this ain’t our fault. It’s YOUR fault. And really, I don’t think I’ve ever been more disgusted with my own daughter than I am right now.
Julianna’s eyes widen and jaw drops in shock.
Julianna: Dad… SERIOUSLY?
Mrs. DiMaria: I share the same sentiments as your father as far as I’m concerned. You didn’t just fail us, you didn’t just disrespect us, you EMBARRASSED us! You are an embarrassment to our legacy, you’re an embarrassment to our brand, you’re an embarrassment to us all back at the facility. Heck, you’re an embarrassment to the city of San Diego and West Coast Genesis.
Julianna: Mom… dad…
Her eyes start welling up with tears as she’s completely incapable of taking this daunting, harrowing criticism and rhetoric that she’s taking from her own parents.
Julianna: You… you realize who you’re saying these words to, right?
Mr. DiMaria: A wrestler that maybe isn’t as good as we hoped, yes.
Julianna: What?
Mrs. DiMaria: Someone that I am embarrassed to have in my sight right now.
Julianna: But… you guys… I’m your DAUGHTER! You can’t treat me like this!
Mrs. DiMaria: You’re an adult. Take it like one.
Julianna: Mom…
Mr. DiMaria: Your mother is right, Jules.
He pauses and scoffs for a bit before he continues.
Mr. DiMaria: We didn’t coddle you very much when you were a child, what makes you think we’re going to even consider doing so as an adult? Face it, Jules. There are far harsher people in this world than us. We’ve experienced it. And if you can’t take this, then maybe we’ve wasted our time with you all of these years.
Julianna: You guys are supposed to be there for me and support me through a tough time like this. This isn’t… I… I can’t put my finger on it but… I can’t help but feel that what you’re both doing to me right now isn’t right.
Mrs. Dimaria: We ARE here for you and we ARE supporting you.
Julianna: How is verbally abusing YOUR DAUGHTER “supportive”?
Mr. DiMaria: Ever heard of tough love, princess?
Julianna: Love…
Julianna clenches her fists as the tears start flowing down her face.
Mrs. DiMaria: Oh come on, Julianna. Don’t be such a baby!
This comment triggers the young upstart, bringing out the worst in her.
Julianna: HOW IS ANY OF THIS “LOVE”?
Julianna stands up.
Julianna: This isn’t LOVE! This is ABUSE! So I disappointed you. I get that! I’m SORRY! What the hell do you two want from me? A fucking robot that you want to live vicariously through? HELL NO! I’m MORE than that! I’ve given you both EVERYTHING you’ve ever wanted from me, and yet you two can’t return the favor.
Mr. DiMaria: Oh don’t even START with that! From day one, we’ve given you the world.
Mrs. DiMaria: We’ve returned the favor countless times.
Julianna: You know what would mean more to me than anything right now? INCLUDING the West Coast Championship? Loving parents that treat you like a human being, like a daughter that they always wanted, not an obligation to carry on a legacy that nobody on this side of the Atlantic gives a crap about. Real love, from BOTH of you, just for being your daughter and the most precious thing in both of your lives… that IS the world to me and you two have NEVER given me that! So how can you say you’ve given me the world? You’ve given me NOTHING!
Mr. DiMaria: Come talk to us when you get your head straight.
Mrs. DiMaria: You’re clearly out of it right now.
Both of her parents leave her alone and this causes her to collapse to her knees on the floor and really let the tears come out.
Julianna: Why do my parents hate me?
She ponders this question upon realizing that this clearly turned into the worst night of her career, not JUST because of her loss to Karari Makelah, but the ignorant, verbal abuse she had to take from her own parents over it.
End Flashback…
Christy and Ally: Wooooooow…..
Julianna’s only two friends are sitting there in shock for a moment as the West Coast Champion continues to cry. Each of them quickly walk up to her and give her a hug.
Ally: No wonder you hate her…
Christy: Yeah, I mean… for Karari to make you go through that…
Julianna: I thought that winning the West Coast Championship would finally give me what I wanted from them. But you both know what happened there.
Ally: Maybe beating Karari would be the thing…
Julianna: No… if winning the West Coast Championship didn’t make them come around, nothing will. Everyone thinks I have it so easy, but really, every time I’m not with you guys, I feel so alone. I’ve always felt alone. My parents had me studying and watching wrestling almost from the moment I learned how to walk. Beating Karari won’t make them come around. But beating her will prove every single abusive word they ever threw at me that night wrong and THAT is my motivation for Saturday…
Christy: You’re going to win this time! We know it.
Ally: Yeah. With how bad you want this, there’s no way you could ever let it happen again.
Julianna: I WON’T let it happen again!
Julianna takes a deep breath, finally drying her eyes of her tears before she lets the rage and the anger within her take over. At this point, she’s focused on getting her long-overdue revenge on Karari Makelah for what, from her perspective, she made her go through on the night of AFI’s Sweet Sixteen round.
