4Q Gym, Birmingham
...the place is empty except for a lone young man going through a vigorous workout. Weight training, followed by sparring with the dummy in the ring, then cardio on the elliptical, rinse and repeat, with a bit of a break in between, all the while the sounds of the Weeknd echoing thru the building. You smell the aroma of a cigar, faintly, but it's there...Cuban. Only the best for this gentleman, one who's very familiar to these airwaves...
...hope he doesn't kill himself down there.
The early morning light shines through the window and reveals our onlooker...owner of this gym, soon to be wrestling Hall of Famer, living legend himself, Ronnie McNeil. He looks down at Freddie pushing himself to and through his limits, and cracks a slight smile.
I sit and I watch this Redemption Wrestling. I see their champions, and to be honest, they don't impress me. Then again, I'm a legend. The man Freddie Styles is supposed to face is just grateful for the opportunity, and gratefulness won't get you shit in this business but used up and ran over. Fred X in this place is definitely championship material...no doubt about it.
I look at my young protégé, and I can honestly say he's the second best man on the roster. No bullshit. Fred can beat anyone on the roster, and make it look damn near easy....Matt Shields included.
The gap between him and the best of the roster is smaller than the gap between himself and the lower end. I know Fred realizes this, but I doubt Xavier Cain or the others will, not yet. It's incumbent on Fred to make him and them realize it. I know my young apprentice has it in him, even though he needs to streamline his move set. The "tradition" of this business is all about getting it done by any means necessary. The second he realizes that....nothing in this world will stop him from being a world champion. The dynasty will continue....
...and Ronnie flashes that diamond sign with a smile on his face, as we fade downstairs to where Freddie is, in a rest break, pouring sweat, body aching, having repeated this routine over the last three hours. He sits leaned over on the bench, breathing slight, seemingly ready to go another round...
First Chris Maverick, then a tag match against two weak ass women. What a way to break into Redemption. Now I have Xavier Cain, a man who's "grateful" to be here. Still don’t mean shit to me. Doesn’t matter where I came from or what happened, begging the man who signs the checks is never a good look. Honestly, if I cared about being liked in Redemption Xavier, I wouldn’t be in Redemption. I’m here for gold, dough, and inflicting pain. Being remembered…that’ll take care of itself.
People look at me and clearly see that I’m a new breed of competition in Redemption. And you know what? That scares the shit out of people like you Xavier…folks that are afraid of change and afraid of people who you know are better than you will ever be. I’m one of those people. I represent that lack of confidence you share with the rest of the lackluster opponents I’ve had to humiliate throughout my nascent career to make it to this point. I’ve always proven to be a constant man of action, while you are still trying to decide on if being a jerk is what you should be facing me. When you lose to me at Glory, it’ll because you didn’t prepare enough to prevent it from happening Xavier. If I end up breaking your neck, you’ll know it’s because you stepped in against a man who doesn’t take shit from anyone. I’ll end your career for the sake of my own entertainment, so if you want to test me, go right ahead.
Freddie stands up, sets his weights on the squat machine, and sits down in position to do a set.
I’m very excited about this match. To be honest, I can’t fucking wait. For someone like me, a match like this is more than just a battle of ego and wits. This is a gift that has been handed down to me by the good people of Redemption who are allowing this massacre to happen. For someone like you Xavier, this is punishment. There is no other way of putting it. You made the mistake of misjudging my capabilities and now you will be paying for it. If I were you, I would start praying right now. Pray for a miracle to give you the strength in a conflict you know you can’t win. This may be a opportunity to you Xavier, and you may be "grateful" for it, but for me, it’s about my natural born ability to achieve constant success doing what I do best. I don’t give a shit what people think about me. I’m not in this business for them, so I don’t need acceptance from anyone, especially you. I walked in that office because I wanted to make a statement, and by God, you are going to be the visual representation of it.
Your name may be Cain, but you're just a lame Abel to me, Xavier
Big money, small change.
