“Worth the Wait”
Jazmyn Rain: Something that I get asked quite a fair bit is why do I choose to accept the struggles that I do? Why do I put myself on the line so much for the greater good? Why do I set goals for myself, knowing it could take a pretty long time for me to achieve them? Some even wonder why I would ever bother risking torment and torture to push through and attempt to achieve what I desire. The answer comes in the rewards. I had to wait six months before I finally exorcised my demon and got my revenge on the person that cruelly robbed me of the GCW Global Championship. I had to wait almost a year before I got my revenge on someone that had beaten me in a Seven Stages of Hell match and who had been casting a shadow over me my entire career.
Hell, I didn’t even win my first world championship until the age of 31… it took me two years to get back into the business after I hit rock bottom four years ago and it wasn’t until my mid-20’s when I decided to be a wrestler.
I admit that I wish that the number of championships I have were greater than what they actually are, but the wait has always been worth the struggle and when I do accomplish that championship gold, the journey, in retrospect, turns out to be a unique experience that I could never take for granted. Thus, this is why I am still doing everything in my power to get that shot at the Five Lakes title that was absolutely robbed from me at Convergence before I even had a shot at it. But that’s not the only wait or struggle I had to contend with. There was a matter, also, in GCW.
That’s right… I had a Global Championship to regain, and 20 months it took for me to get to the point that I got to yesterday in Los Angeles. But a 20 month “epic” finally came to an end because FINALLY…
...I regained that GCW Global Championship that was robbed from me in cruel heartbreaking fashion.
And that moment of perfect happiness that I experienced? It’s something that I will never, ever forget…
Date: November 11, 2017
Jazmyn Rain is backstage at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, sitting on a crate after GCW’s Survival of the Fittest show ended about a half an hour ago. Sporting a neon green wrestling attire and a large bandage on her forehead after suffering a cut in an elimination chamber, the Charlotte native has tears of joy streaming down her face as she clutches the GCW Global Championship that, after 20 long months of struggle, she FINALLY regained. Holding it against her chest, the new champion continues to cry as she reflects on everything she ever had to overcome in order to achieve this long-awaited moment of glory. Her eyes are about to water a little more at the sight of her fiance Derek coming close to her.
Derek: So are you going to put that on?
Jazmyn places the title on her lap before looking back at Derek, tears still flowing from her eyes.
Jazmyn: Can… can you… help me?
Derek: Of course…
Jazmyn hands over the title to Derek as she slides off the crate. She covers her face with her hands trying hard to contain her tears as Derek straps the title on her waist. Jazmyn slides it until the center plate is at her front and the moment it hits her, she loses it in her joy.
Jazmyn: Oh Derek…
Jazmyn throws herself into a warm, supportive embrace by her fiance, burying her face into one of his shoulders. A few sobs are heard as Derek comforts her more by rubbing her back.
Derek: Words can’t describe how happy I am for you right now.
Derek gently and slightly grabs Jazmyn at the shoulders and slowly pushes her off of him. He continues to hold her as he looks at her and wipes her tears away.
Jazmyn: I waited so long…
Derek: I know, but it’s worth it, isn’t it?
Jazmyn nods as she continues to compose herself.
Jazmyn: After everything that had ever happened to me, from the way it was robbed from me to begin with, to dealing with death for a few minutes, to overcoming demon after demon, evil after evil… finally… FINALLY! I got it back! How did I ever attain such… such happiness?
Derek: It was meant to be. From the day that I met you in high school, even though you wouldn’t know it until last year, I knew you were someone very special. I knew that you were strong on the inside and you just needed to find a way to let it out of you. You attained this because you finally realized and embraced your potential as a human being. I seriously am the luckiest guy in the entire world having someone like you.
Jazmyn: Thank you…
Derek: You don’t need to thank me. You’re the one that went out there and made it happen.
Jazmyn: But I would have never gotten the opportunity if you didn’t revive me after my cardiac arrest.
Jazmyn pauses as a few more tears of joy stroll down her face.
Jazmyn: That was one of the best things anyone has ever done for me. You never gave up on me and knowing I’m going to get married to a man that believed in me so much is one of the greatest feelings in the world.
Derek takes in Jazmyn’s words, obviously a little surprised at the perspective that Jazmyn just gave. But deep down, he knows she’s right. His one heroic deed was a domino that started off the array of falling dominoes that would finally lead to this moment.
Jazmyn: I’m… I’m not in pain anymore. The dark cloud from two Resurrections ago is finally lifted, completely. Now I feel whole, like everything is so right.
Derek: Nobody deserves to lose that title the way you did that night, but that’s in the past now. It’s yours again. And whether you hold it for two days, two months or two years, you’re going to make every moment count, because that’s what the Guardian Angel has always been about.
Jazmyn smiles through her tears, wiping them away and taking a deep breath. Little does she know that another party is about to join in the happiness.
Brooklyn: Jazzy!!!
Jazmyn’s best friend, Brooklyn Smith, suddenly walks into the scene and it doesn’t take long for the two of them to exchange a long, passionate hug.
Brooklyn: Congratulations, you finally did it.
Jazmyn: Thank you… and thank you for never giving up on me during the worst of times.
Brooklyn: I never could.
Derek: Brook’s been a part of this longer than I have so… I’ll leave you two alone.
Jazmyn: No, it’s fine…
Derek: Jazmyn, you both deserve this.
Derek gives a quick kiss to Jazmyn’s bandaged forehead before he departs, leaving her alone with her best friend.
Brooklyn: But nobody deserves this more than you…
Jazmyn: Brook, you don’t need to say that.
Brooklyn: But you need to hear it! After all, it was a LONG wait, was it not? Whether it was torture after torture from Myra and Trenton, whether it was Trenton robbing you the way he did because of a sick freak that never deserved you, you had to overcome so much just to make this happen.
Jazmyn nods, understanding what Brooklyn is saying.
Brooklyn: Even after you found your way again, it wasn’t easy. You beat and dismantled Utopia with a guy that’s not even in the business anymore and two assholes that were only in it for themselves for crying out loud. Now two of your three teammates from this year’s Resurrection are gone and… well… um… I’m not going to talk about the third one, but yeah… you led makeshift team to accomplish Utopia’s demise. It takes someone very special to be able to accomplish that…
Brooklyn grabs Jazmyn by the wrists and holds them as they lock eyes.
Brooklyn> And of course, it should come as no surprise that it took a match with such high risk odds like a chamber match for you to finally win it back. I’m so glad that Livewire finally has a Global champion it can be proud of again…
Jazmyn blushes a little, obviously trying not to respond to the compliment as her humble and modest nature kicks in on instinct.
Jazmyn: Let’s not go that far now…
Jazmyn laughs.
Brooklyn: Well, you overcame someone who did nothing but dismiss you and try to make you look bad with her “benevolent queen” crap, but the less said about that the better. I was there all the way, from when you first suffered that heartbreak, to right here and now. I always knew that this day would come.
Jazmyn: Me too… even though I admit I had my episodes of shaky confidence at times.
Jazmyn sighs upon the reflection that she just made.
Jazmyn: But the best part? This was all for everyone that ever stood behind me, you, Derek, and all of my friends in this business. This was especially for all of my friends that Aphrodite put through the ringer throughout her tyrannical reign of terror… oh gosh, I need to stop before I get called a drama queen…
There’s a brief pause as both Jazmyn and Brooklyn laugh.
Jazmyn: And my dad… as he recovers from his colon cancer surgery and chemotherapy… without him, this never could have been possible. He was always there for me and now, I’ve returned the favor. I wish he was here for this and not in the hospital, but I can sense his spiritual presence from a cross-country distance.
Jazmyn sighs one last time.
Jazmyn: What an incredible ride it was… these last 20 months…
Brooklyn: And it all became worth that long, LONG wait. So… now that you’ve finally gotten it back, what are you going to do now.
Jazmyn expresses a confident smile as she grabs the center plate of her championship with her right hand.
Jazmyn: I’m going to protect this championship from any evildoer that wants to take it. I’m going to be the champion that I always had the potential to be the first time around. It’ll help that I won’t have title shot contract cash ins or spotlight stealers hanging over me like a dark cloud, but with my confidence being where it’s at, with my self-esteem being at the best it’s ever been, and with every ounce of spirit and ability within me, there’s nothing that is going to stop me from representing this with honor, courage and dignity. I know last time around, I was a bit of a fragile target. No way this time around.
Brooklyn: Now that sounds like a champion I’m looking forward to watching.
The two women smile at each other before exchanging another embrace.
Jazmyn: I love you!
Brooklyn: I love you too! Congratulations and thanks for being such a wonderful human being!
The embrace lasts a few seconds before Brooklyn leaves Jazmyn alone backstage with the Global championship around her waist. Reflecting on the journey, the wait, and how worth it it all was, Jazmyn soaks in every minute of the happiest moment of her career, with a hunch feeling that even still, her future is brighter than before!
Closing Thoughts
Jazmyn Rain: For 20 months, I waited to become the GCW Global Champion again.
Would I go through that journey again, every step of the way? Good and bad? You bet. With this now having happened, I have a stronger feeling than ever that the prime of my career has only just begun. Such confidence is going to do me well as I head into Dissension tomorrow, having to overcome this comedown from such a happy moment. But hey, what’s one more obstacle to overcome right? After all, the road to the NGW Five Lakes Championship has been unkind to me so far.
So goes the roller coaster, but just like my journey to regain something that meant so much to me, the night I become the Five Lakes Champion, I’m going to reflect on that journey and realize how worth it that also was!
As always, when I look at my future, I know my best is yet to come!
