Setting: My office in Chicago, Illinois. Middle of the day. Sunshine. Not a cloud in the sky. Cold though. Mid 30s. Trying to enjoy the Bears and Packers game but need to get this promo up for NGW. Thought Jack was going to do it but he’s to “busy” to waste his time and effort on someone like Martin Karloff. So here I am sitting behind my desk trying to figure out what I’m going to say for this promo. Going into this match cold so nothing really too exciting to say. Be flexible like Gumby I guess. So let’s get this promo over with.
Lights
Camera
..........Action.
Chris Constantine: “So to be in the wrestling industry you need a few things to be successful. Anyone can get over if you put in the time and effort. Doesn’t matter how you look or what your background is in life. You can be rich, poor, or grew up in a shitty childhood. If you want to be successful then there’s really two things to get yourself over with the crowd and be famous in this industry.
One is knowing how to wrestle. I mean if you don’t know how to wrestle then your not a wrestler. Pretty simple. Spend some years training not in just one camp but in multiple. Go travel the world and train under different styles of wrestling. Go wrestle in the indies. Go wrestle in a bingo hall in front of 20 people.”
-I can see the guys behind the camera look at me funny. If they think it sounds funny, then people at home will think it sounds funny. So I guess I have to explain a little.
Chris Constantine: “I’m serious with that last statement.
It’s harder to wrestle in front of 20 people than it is an entire arena filled with thousands of people because it’s quieter, the fans are closer, the hecklers can be heard, and it’s easier to see people leave when you don’t have their attention. You don’t want people not giving a damn about your match because then they’ll never want to pay to see you ever again. And when you see someone leaving, it gets in your head. You start to second guess yourself. Then your head isn’t in the match and if your head isn’t in the match mistakes will be made and you will lose.
When it’s an arena filled with thousands of people, you don’t think about any of that. You don’t see the individuals out in the crowd. You don’t hear the conversations. It’s just a giant ocean of people.
Now knowing how to wrestle is number one.
Wrestling isn’t everything though. It should. But it’s not. There’s a market for people that love wrestling and will pay to see what happens in that ring if you’re good enough. But that market for those marks, it’s small. You need to get the attention the casual fan. The assholes that come by every once in awhile to see what’s going on in the wrestling world. The casual fan who sees a federation is trending and wants to see what the deal is. You get them hooked then that’s more money in your pocket.
The problem with these assholes is that they don’t give a damn about the wrestling. They care more about the gimmick than what happens in that ring.
That’s why number two is you need a gimmick. Something that makes you different from the rest of the crowd. Something that gets people’s attention. That’s why you see wrestlers wear masks. Or color themselves with makeup. Have some elaborate back story. Wear something catchy to the eye. Or talk trash and have some catchy catch phrase. Something that makes them unique from the rest of the crowd.
That’s why Jack has his hair the way it is. It’s different. That’s why my name is Chris Constantine. It’s not my real name but it’s something that’s easy to remember. The same with Jack and his wrestling name. Jack Tillman isn’t his real name.
It’s a ying and yang sort of deal when it comes to professional wrestling and sports entertainment wrestling. If you don’t have one, then you won’t make it in this industry.”
-Alright. I’ve pulled them in with the opener. Now it’s time to get to the meat of the promo.
Chris Constantine: “So I know your wondering why I’m going down wrestling 101 with you. Well....it’s because of the returning Martin Karloff. The man. The beast. The......whatever he is. Most of the people on the roster see this dangerous man....but that’s just because he covers himself in paint.
I’ll admit it, the dude looks like a billy badass with the art design and the airbrushing on his skin. Who ever does that for him, big props. But if you were to wipe the paint off his face. If you were to show the world the real Martin Karloff......he isn’t special. He’s normal. Look at Martin and what he has done for NGW and any other company he’s been apart of. The guy hasn’t accomplished anything in NGW. No big wins. Nothing to really write home about.
So what does Jack have to be afraid of when he steps in the ring with Martin? He’s nothing more than a mediocre wrestler who left NGW, because of reasons no one cares about, and decided to come back because of reasons no one cares about. I didn’t even know Martin left to tell you he truth because Martin is some mid card loser that’s never caught my eye. Like I said, the guy has a cool gimmick with the face paint stuff, but in between the ropes he hasn’t got it and because of that he’s just another face in the company.
So Martin, go ahead and spend three hours becoming his Martin Karloff character that you portray to the world. Look at yourself in the mirror and become that demon. Say your chants, sacrifice a chicken to what ever dark lord you call master, and become this Manticore or Phantom creature. Do what ever you have to do to get ready because as soon as you step in that ring with my client.....the reigning Five Lakes NGW Champion......Jack “The Ripper” Tillman......Jack will beat the ever living crap out of you and with your own blood wipe the paint off your face and show the world the true Martin Karloff......not a demon, not a monster.....but a sad little man.”
-Promo over. Better than what Martin has put up.....which is nothing. Kicking my feet up, I pick up my remote and turn the tv on so that I can watch my Bears. To my displeasurement the Bears are down by a touchdown in the second. Still plenty of time to come back and win.
