INT: REDONDO BEACH GYM – DAY
Toward the back of the gym, CJ LORSON bounces on the balls of his feet, taped fists up in a fighting stance. He swings his fists at a heavy punching bag, the loud thud reverberating through the area. Beads of sweat drip down the side of his face, indicating he’s been here for quite a while working out.
“Three…”
CJ’s fists thud against the punching bag three times.
“…and five.”
He swings at the punching bag, this time with a combination of five shots. After a couple of more combinations of punches, CJ sidekicks the bag as hard as he can. He backs away from the bag, hands on his hips and breathing heavily. He turns his head to the camera and points in the direction of the punching bag.
“Three and five. That’s the record I stand with heading into this battle royal match against three of the best competitors I’ve ever seen…two of which I’ve faced before, and who both had a hand in the three and five record I just mentioned.”
Obviously, he refers to Tasmin and Izzy, who both beat him once before.
“Izzy, you and I have had more than one battle, and I’ll be damned if you’re not one of the toughest competitors I’ve faced in that ring. And the same goes for you, Tasmin. Heck, you’re the one who handed me my second loss in WCG at Crossroads: Rise. To deny that either of you is tough as nails and every bit as capable of winning this battle royal as anyone else in the match would be the biggest lie anybody could tell themselves.”
CJ takes off the wraps around his fists and tosses them aside. He grabs a water bottle from beside his gym bag nearby and takes a quick swig before tossing it into the bag.
“And then there’s the outlier, at least for me; Adam Sanders. Adam, you’re the one unknown variable in this match that I’ll have to contend with. See, I’ve seen you in the ring a few times before, but it’s one thing to see what someone can do from a distance. It’s a whole different thing to experience it first-hand. At WCG: Hype, I’m expecting everybody in that ring to bring their A-game, including you, Adam. They say always hope for the best, but prepare for the worst, and that’s exactly what I plan to do.”
CJ wags a finger in the camera’s direction.
“Because, you see, despite having that unknown variable in Adam Sanders in the ring against me, that three and five record that I hold, and the fact that I got this close to having a WCG Long Beach title shot is all the motivation that I need.”
CJ puts his index finger and thumb close together to emphasize “this close.” He shakes his head in disbelief when he mentions how close he got to a Long Beach title shot and came up just short.
“Shawn Young, you got the best of me at Unscripted. The Wonder Lock is no joke, and I’m not afraid or ashamed to admit you were the better man that night. You beat me fair and square in the middle of that ring. You. Made. Me. Tap. Period. But don’t think that’s going to stop me, Shawn. I don’t want you to think, for one second, that I’m going to stop chasing that Long Beach title opportunity. You see, I had just a taste of it; I had a taste of that spotlight just being in the running for an opportunity to vie for that title. And that’s all that I needed.”
CJ swipes his arms across himself to emphasize that that’s all he needed.
“All the strife, all the hardship, all the self-doubt I had, before that one single match against Shawn Young, it all became worth it. All the difficulties that I had with that three and four record at the time looming overhead. All of it became worth it in that one instant. And then just as quickly as the opportunity knocked, I tapped on the mat and lost it all over again. But that one experience was all that I needed. That one match was all that I needed for me to know that it would all be worth it. That one match was all that I needed to prove to myself, to prove to my fans, and to prove to my family that the hardship, the self-doubt, the downfalls; everything happened for a reason. That one single opportunity; the Long Beach qualifier against Shawn Young was all that I needed to prove to myself and everyone around me that I had what it takes to hack it in this company, in this business.”
CJ slowly nods, his focus turned away from the camera as he absentmindedly paces from side to side, his eyes slightly glazed over, a faraway look in them. After a couple of seconds of being lost in thought, his mind finally comes back and he refocuses on the camera.
“At WCG: Hype, in that battle royal; Tasmin, Izzy, Adam, you can be sure I’m bringing my A-game. You can be sure I’m bringing everything that I’ve got and more to that ring. Now, don’t worry, I won’t let this newfound determination and intensity corrupt me. I’m not going to get things twisted and start to lose myself in trying to regain an opportunity for that Long Beach championship. But now that I’ve gotten a glimpse of that spotlight, I’m not about to sit idly by and let it slip by me again. So, Tasmin…Izzy…Adam…I hope you’re ready. As I’ve said once before, it’s time to knock it out of the park.”
With that, CJ bends and grabs his gear, tossing his gym bag over his shoulder and heading away from the camera. He rounds the corner and disappears out of view as we
