Lucha Libre Taco Shop
San Diego, California
Scene opens inside the famous eatery located in the Mission Hills section of San Diego. The brightly colored walls are festooned with mementos of the rich history of professional wrestling as contested in Mexico. Photos, championship belts, newspaper articles, and of course, the sacred luchador masks prevalent in the culture are everywhere you look. Even the televisions scattered around the restaurant are playing lucha libre matches; some current, some classic.
The camera pans around to the entrance, where we see West Coast Genesis competitors Donovan Basch and Danni LeBlanc speaking with the hostess.
Hostess: Hola. Do you have a reservation?
Donovan: Yes, we do. We’ve reserved the Champion’s Booth.
Hostess: Your name?
Donovan: Donovan Basch….
The hostess looks for his reservation in her book.
Hostess: Ah, yes. The staff is almost finished preparing it for you. It’ll just be a few moments…
Danni: No problem…
A couple of minutes later, the couple is escorted to a roped-off booth, where a waitress is waiting for them.
Waitress: Would you care for drinks before you order?
Danni: A margarita, please…
Donovan: Make that two….
Waitress: Certainly.
She Hurries off to place their drink order.
Danni: If I didn't know better, I'd swear you chose this particular restaurant for a reason.
Donovan: More than one, actually. One, since you're going into a championship match, the decor of this booth is appropriate….
Danni: Flatterer… but I actually have to win the match before I can call myself a champion…
Donovan: Think of this as motivation.
Danni: Good point.
Donovan: Secondly, considering that I'm facing El Bombardero Azul, a place like this would put me in a better mindset…
Danni: Hard not to be inspired by all of this, Spidey…
Donovan: Exactly. The third reason I chose this place is because I heard they had really good food here.
Danni: I heard that, too. Anyway, I need to freshen up a bit before we order….
Donovan: Go ahead. Did you want me to order any appetizers if the waitress comes back while you're gone?
Danni: No, thank you.
Danni exits the booth in search of the ladies’ room. Donovan turns to the camera.
Donovan: El Bombardero Azul….
The Blue Bomber….
The Masked Mystery….
I must say, it’s difficult to get a reading on you. And no, it’s not just because of the mask, but because you haven’t uttered a single word since your arrival. There is no indication whatsoever about your thoughts or feelings; the only interaction you have with the world is through your manager.
I wonder how you communicate with your manager… I've never seen you use anything other than rudimentary sign language. Are you so protective of your alter ego that you won't even address your opponents? Perplexing, to say the least….
What is not an enigma is your talent, mi amigo enmascarado. The fine tradition of lucha libre is something you hold dear, and thus far, you have served that tradition well. I know that you will fight with honor and with heart, and for that, I thank you.
Alas, I fear that you may not have very much to thank ME for when we meet in the ring at the Oceanview Arena in Port Hueneme for Hype.
The waitress returns with a tray laden with Danni and Donovan’s drinks.
Waitress: Did you need more time before you order?
Donovan: Yes, thank you.
The waitress nods and heads off to assist other patrons.
Donovan: Right now, I've developed a bit of tunnel vision. You see, as far as my career goes, all I can see in front of me is the West Coast Championship, and more importantly, the current titleholder, Julianna DiMaria. She is the focal point of my intent, and anyone foolish enough to come between myself and her downfall is an obstacle, and I'm in no mood for such nonsense.
So you need to not be in my way, Azul. Unfortunately, your pride as a luchador won't let you back down from a fight. My course of action, simply put, is to deal with you in the most efficient manner possible. That entails decisive, and sometimes, rather brutal action. I don't do this out of spite, but out of necessity. DiMaria must bear witness to what's in store for her when she stops hiding behind all of these non-title matches and be the respectable champion she wants people to perceive her as. Until that day comes, each and every individual that steps into the ring with me Will be a placeholder, a delaying action to forestall my ascension to the apex of West Coast Genesis.
Since I won’t receive a response directly from you, Azul, perhaps I should address your representative. Mr. Lan, you’ve certainly earned your commission, haven’t you? You’ve hyped your client to the moon, touting his abilities as if he were the greatest luchador to ever lace up a mask. It would be highly irresponsible of me not to study my opponent, and I will say, he does seem to fly as if he were born in the sky….
But…
Donovan takes a sip of his margarita.
Donovan: Gravity is a harsh mistress, and she lets no one escape her grasp. Azul cannot remain aloft forever, and while he may try to confound me with quick strikes, in order to hit me, he has to get close enough to connect, and that will be his downfall. When, not if, I get ahold of him, he will be in for a rather unpleasant time. If you and your client were as diligent in your research as I was in mine, you would know that my methods are effective, if not pretty. But don't make the mistake of thinking that I won't go airborne if the need arises. Azul may be an aerial artist, but the concept of flight isn't completely outside of my repertoire.
At Hype, I'll be coming in with key victories fueling me, and I plan on adding yet another one…
Donovan hears someone clear their throat behind him. He turns to see Danni standing there, lightly shaking her head.
Danni: Let me guess… reason number four would be so that you can get in some trash talk before Hype?
Donovan: Guilty as charged….
Danni chuckles.
Danni: Whatever am I going to do with you?
Donovan: I'm sure you'll figure something out…
Danni sits back down and begins to drink her margarita as the scene fades out.
