“At last, the match has been made. One might think I’m referring to the NGW Heavyweight Championship match between Kayla Richards, Matthew Shields, Johnny Maverick, Alex Jones, and yours truly, but alas...I am not. We will get to that soon though. But one step at a time. This is about something a bit more immediate.”
The camera opens to a smiling Dropkick King inside an empty football field. Not quite the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, where the New Orleans Saints play their ball, but a smaller one, probably belonging to a high school. The lights are all on as Adrien Cochrane stands at the fifty-yard line.
“Coda, you’ve wanted us to have a test of skill and strength. You’ve wanted an opportunity to see which one of us is the better warrior in that squared circle. You said back in July that I was a worthy opponent and a strong competitor. You said it was a compliment you don’t give lightly. Remember when you said that? I hope that the announcement of this match doesn’t change that and that you will give me the fight a champion of your stature can give me.”
Cochrane starts walking closer to one of the endzones before holding up his index finger to make his point coming up.
“I do have one concern though. It’s a small concern that I know you will share with me. See, I have not had a match that did not end with some form of weaponry getting involved, some sort of interference, or some sort of attack right after the bell since my very first in the company back in June. Aurora Graves was the only opponent I’ve had a real match where the bell rang, we fought until the other one could not continue, the bell rang, and we both went backstage.
“I posed a question on Twitter. I said ‘For once, I would like to have a match that ends without some form of interference or attempts at cheating. Is that too much to ask for?’ and it pleased me that I got a response from you on that. Your reply was short...one word to be exact...but absolutely what I needed to hear. You said ‘No’. You said that is not too much to ask for. It’s something I haven’t had in over four months, and it’s been a bit frustrating. And I know that you intend to give me that. Your intentions are not what I’m worried about. It’s everyone else I’m worried about.
“This is what I suspect will happen. And honestly, I really hope I’m wrong. What I think is going to happen is that you’re going to tell Matthew Shields, Jack Tillman, and Kayla Richards to not get involved. One or more of them will ignore that request and stick their nose into this match anyway. And like I said, I really hope they do listen to you. I’m just afraid they will not.”
Adrien presses his lips together before tilting his head to the side. He’s at the thirty-yard line at this point.
“I apologize in advance if my suspicion and cynicism offend you. It’s just the track record of everyone else involved has me skeptical. I don’t trust the other three. And I hate that I feel that way, Coda. Because I want a straight contest between you and me where we can really showcase that we are two of the most talented fighters on the roster. Because that is what I believe, Coda. I believe we are two of the toughest competitors and I would love for an opportunity to show that to everyone, including the other six in our groups.”
Adrien has officially reached what is considered in football jargon as the “red zone” as he passes the twenty-yard line.
“I do hope this gives me an opportunity to make another point to you. I know you find my philosophy of morality to be blasé and naïve. You think I’m misguided, that there is no difference between light and dark. The way you see things is a bit different. You only work in the realm of strong and weak, not light and dark. Or at least you’ve said that at one point. I’ll work under the assumption that you still are.
“Coda, you may not agree with me. I don’t expect you to either. To you, morality isn’t the definitive factor on the worth of another. To you, it’s all about the strength and skill. It’s all about the difference the person can make with their own two hands rather than what is in their heart. What they do and why they do it are irrelevant in your eyes. It’s all about the question if they succeeded or not. I’ll possibly never comprehend that point of view, though trust me when I say it was from lack of trying.”
Ten-yard line.
“So this is what I intend to do. I plan on stepping into that ring with you with one purpose and one purpose only: prove to you that I am the better competitor. And to prove that, I plan on defeating you in this match. Do I think this is an easy task? Of course not. You’re hella talented and are one of the most capable champions I’ve shared a locker room with. What I need to do is do what I have to do in order to be better.
“Because maybe I’ll never get you to understand how I view the world and maybe you’ll never get me to understand yours. Good, bad, strong, weak...we’re just going to have to agree to disagree, it seems. But what I am going to do is show you where I stand on your own compass. I’m going to show you why I believe I have a case as one of the best wrestlers on this entire roster. I’m going to show you first hand that the man prepared to lead the charge for the Guardians is someone who should be considered dangerous, even if your leader does what he can in order to try to convince everyone otherwise.
“To me, this isn’t about the match being between a Guardian and a Destroyer. When it’s all said and done, it’s only the two of us standing in that ring...or so I hope anyway...and nobody else. The whole stable madness going on is thrown right out the window. We’re respectful to one another, sure. But this is the opportunity for me to really give you a full grasp of where I am in terms of your strong versus weak paradigm. This is a chance for Coda to fully realize that that Adrien Cochrane might just be the best damn wrestler she’s ever faced off against. And this is the chance for you to demonstrate that you are the dominant champion I think you are.”
Adrien has reached the end zone. He stops walking.
“The question is this, Coda: can you overcome the biggest challenge you’ve had to face since you first walked into a New Generation Wrestling ring? Whether you realize it or not, that is what this match will be. And while I’ll never expect you to realize my views on light and dark...”
Every light in the stadium goes off, shrouding Adrien in darkness as his voice gives his closing remark.
“...I do expect you to realize what it means to be across the ring from the Dropkick King.”
Cuz they’re inferior, get it?
Check their exterior, shred it
Cuz they’re fake
Don’t even pay them one cent of attention
Don’t even listen one second
Don’t even mention the fact that they said shit
Just let them bite down on their own worthless infection
Check your complexion
Make sure you’re still beaming, fiasco causing
Please stick up for what you believe in
Cuz the best part of you is seeing both the sides getting even
And individual with a conscious that has reached an agreement
Conception, no past tense
Always conceiving cuz when you look back
They will all be reaching out for your feet and screaming
Clawing the dirt, and you pick them up
You’re a person with a reason
Plus everyone deserves to have the urge to love breathing
You can tear yourself apart with the dark and light
Or you could just stop
Close your eyes and unite

I don’t wanna live my whole life in the dark
Turn the lights on so we can see where we are
I don’t wanna live my whole life in the dark
Turn the lights on so we can see where we are
Open your eyes
(I don’t wanna live my whole life in the dark)
Stretch your arms and step into the light
(Turn the lights on so we can see where we are)
Don’t go too far
(I don’t wanna live my whole life in the dark)
We’re all in the dark
(Turn the lights on so we can see where we are)
Open your eyes
(I don’t wanna live my whole life in the dark)
Stretch your arms and step into the light
