Breakaway: Part 2
WHERE WE LAST LEFT OFF…
Date: October 7, 2017
Julianna looks at her phone and her eyes widen, though it’s unknown whether it’s shock, fear or both. The West Coast Champion realizes that she has a text message:
“CALL ME…. NOW!!!!!! You are in SERIOUS trouble! Don’t make us call the police to get you back home- DAD”
Julianna: Oh no...
With Julianna having a tough night as is, her father texting her demanding she call him just made it worse. Now? The young champion is at a serious crossroads on what to do. Does she continue to pretend her parents don’t exist? Or does she deal with the current conflict and bitterness at hand with them head on? For Julianna, growing up has definitely never come easy!
Julianna: You’re doing this to me NOW?!?!?!
Julianna’s anger completely redlines as she’s understandably upset that her father would even contact her. Thinking about her next course of actions, Julianna throws up her hands and decides to just deal with it and get it over with.
Julianna: You know what, this is ridiculous. I’m going to give him a piece of my mind. I am NOT going to be dealing with this crap anymore!
Julianna swallows her pride and decides to call her father, realizing that dealing with it head on instead of running away was the right thing to do. She takes a few deep breaths, trying to minimize her anger, but she realizes with how upset and frustrated she is, it’s going to be impossible. Her time to think is brief as her father answers on the other end.
Mr. DiMaria: Where are you?
Julianna: None of your business. What do you want? I just want to get this over with and move on with my life!
Mr. DiMaria: What the fuck are you doing, Jules? Seriously!
Julianna: What do you mean?
Mr. DiMaria: You know exactly what I mean, young lady. I’ve seen the way you’ve been carrying yourself and honestly, your mother and I couldn’t be more ashamed. We didn’t raise you to be this way and now you’re letting that title get to your head? Are you fuckin’ kidding me? All of this work we put into your career and this is the thanks we’re going to get? God, Jules, it feels like you don’t appreciate a damn thing your mother and I ever did for you.
Julianna busts out laughing, though in a way that indicates pain as her father’s comments trigger a bitter feeling within her heart.
Mr. DiMaria: What in god’s name is so funny?
Julianna: You want to talk about appreciation, huh? What about everything I ever did for BOTH of you? I’m going to be blunt here. You two are just living vicariously through ME because neither of you even got your career off the ground here in America. That’s all this is. Every little mistake, you scold me for. Every time I do something right, you’re all “okay, now do this Julianna”. “Okay, now do THAT, Julianna”. You two couldn’t even have the decency to congratulate me and actually enjoy the moment with me. No, you two had to place even MORE expectations on me upon winning the title and really Dad… I’m TIRED of it!
Mr. DiMaria: We’ve always had to be tough on ya and that’s something that’s not gonna change.
Julianna: I’m turning 23 this month, you inconsiderate JERK OFF! I’m not a fucking kid anymore…
Mr. DiMaria: Then quit actin’ like one!
Julianna: DON’T INTERRUPT ME!!!!
Julianna’s anger toward her father’s obvious ignorance is only getting worse.
Julianna: I do whatever the FUCK I want okay? Think about what you just did right now. You’re texting me telling me “you’re in trouble. Call me now or else we’re going to call the cops”. Are you fucking kidding me? Who DOES that? I can take care of myself, Dad! I don’t need you and I don’t need mom. I’m a fucking champion now and I am NOT going to be treated as anything less. Growing up, you two NEVER let me have any fun. You couldn’t even let me have a fucking boyfriend…
Mr. DiMaria: Yeah, no way my little girl was getting a boyfriend… especially a “fucking” type…
Julianna angrily sighs.
Julianna: You’re not taking me seriously, are you?
Mr. DiMaria: Jules, let’s be honest here. Ya don’t even take YOURSELF seriously if how you act on social media is anything to go by. Maybe we just didn’t discipline ya enough.
Julianna: Save the lecture for someone that gives a shit!
Mr. DiMaria: I’m your father, you don’t talk to me like that.
Julianna: And I’m an adult, so I have every right. What’s the matter? Is the old man losing his edge? Huh? What are you going to do when I get home, Dad? Spank me? Even now, you and mom treat me like a child and I am DONE with it. You two have served your purpose as far as my career is concerned and I’m not going to put up with it anymore. You want to keep treating me like a kid? Then fuck you!
Mr. DiMaria: What did you just say to me?
Julianna: What? You need a hearing aid or something, Dad? Fuck you… FUCK YOU… FUCK YOU…. FUCK YOU!!!!!! Is that loud enough for you? Huh? Are you going to hire someone to Grand Theft Auto my ass just to get me home? It’s MY life and MY career so I am about to take charge of both of those things and I am going to tell you how it’s going to be from now on. Because from this point on…
Mr. DiMaria: ...unbelievable disrespect…
Julianna: DON’T INTERRUPT ME GOD DAMN IT!!!!! LISTEN TO YOUR DAUGHTER FOR ONCE!!! FUCK… why is that so HARD?!?!?!
Mr. DiMaria: You talk to me like that again, I’m throwing you out of my house.
Julianna: I’m not coming “home”, Dad, so again… FUCK YOU!
There’s an awkward pause on the other end as Julianna quivers a little bit with the tears filling up her eyes again. She’s experiencing how incredibly difficult it is to talk to one of her own parents like that, but she knows that this has to be done. The West Coast Champion is slightly unnerved by the silence she hears on the other end.
Julianna: Dad…?!?!?!
Mr. DiMaria: ...so that’s it then…
Julianna detects shock and dismay in her father’s voice and begins to realize that he’s caving in.
Mr. DiMaria: This is what you really want? You just want to throw away everything your mother and I ever did for you? You want to sod off everything we taught you?
Julianna: Yes, yes and YES! You two have taught me so much, true. But right now? That’s not even relevant anymore. The last straw was when you two couldn’t even be happy for me for winning the title for more than mere moments before you started to get on my ass about how to act like a champion. It was just business as usual for you two while it meant the entire world to me. I don’t want to deal with this crap anymore. So, all I am asking of both of you is to leave me the hell alone! I’ll come by on my own time to get my stuff and… and… I’m GONE! You two provided me life, food, a place to live… but you never took the time to bond with me. I wasn’t a child to either of you… just an obligation.
Mr. DiMaria: I understand how you feel…
Julianna: No you don’t!
Mr. DiMaria: My parents were the same way.
Julianna: So why continue that with me? Don’t answer that. I don’t want to hear it.
Mr. DiMaria: Sweetheart, listen. This doesn’t need to be a misunderstanding.
Julianna: You never loved me, that’s why you treated me and raised me the way you did!
Mr. DiMaria: No Jules, you’re wrong. We raised you the way we did because you mean more to us than anything in the world.
Julianna: LIAR!!!!
Julianna’s tears begin to stream down her face.
Julianna: You are an absolute LIAR! If you both love me so much, you would take the opportunity to understand me and where I come from. For so long, from when I was a little girl, you two were always hard on me. I wasn’t living in a home… I was living in a concentration camp!
Mr. DiMaria: Oh jeez…. *sigh*... if that’s how you feel, then I can’t help it.
Julianna: If you two love and care about me so much, prove it to me. Show me that I’m more than just an obligation you had to deal with for 22 years and change. Until that moment comes, if it ever does, I don’t want to be anywhere near you two and the day I stop by to get my stuff, I don’t want either of you to be there! Period! Do I make myself clear? Stay out of my career! I run it! Not mom, not you, I RUN IT!
Mr. DiMaria: Is this what you really want?
Julianna: YES! For the love of god…. YES! At least do THAT much for me for fuck’s sake!
Mr. DiMaria: Alright. Have it your way then.
Julianna breathes a sigh of relief, realizing that the burden of having to live up to her parents’ expectations are dead and gone.
Mr. DiMaria: However…
Julianna: Save it!
Mr. DiMaria: Jules… if you appreciated ANYTHING we ever did for you, even if it’s just one iota of it, let me say one last thing before I let you go.
Julianna sighs and rolls her eyes, reluctantly going with it.
Julianna: What?
Mr. DiMaria: The world is a cruel place and you don’t know the full extent of how cruel it can be. You’re going to experience some hard times, times that you won’t even know what to do with. When that moment comes, Julianna, your mother and I are going to be there for you.
Julianna rolls her eyes again.
Mr. DiMaria: Don’t forget that.
Julianna: Bye, dad!
Mr. DiMaria: Good luck to ya…
Julianna can’t hang up the phone fast enough as she walks over to a chair in the lawn and sits down on it. The conversation that took place took an emotional toll on her as she covers her face, sobbing and crying a little having dealt with a lot of turmoil just now. While she’s letting it out, she has no idea that Christy and Ally just walked out of the back door to check on her. Julianna continues to cry as they approach her, with Christy placing a hand on her shoulder.
Julianna: WHAT?
Ally: Are you okay? We heard you yelling.
Julianna: Get away… *sobs*... get away from me!
Christy: What happened?
Julianna: I just cut off my parents and I’m scared on having to deal with this… this life… on my own!
Christy walks in front of her and helps her up to her feet. She doesn’t hesitate to pull her into a hug while Ally joins in to make it a group embrace.
Ally: You’re not alone. You have us. We want to be your friends. Just let us in, that’s all we ask.
Christy: Friendship isn’t a bad thing, Julianna. You can’t live this life alone. It’s not healthy.
Julianna: Thank you…
The group embrace ends and Julianna wipes away some tears.
Julianna: ...you two don’t have a clue how long and how badly I’ve really wanted what you two just gave me…
Christy: What’s that?
Julianna: Friends… friends that I can count on!
Julianna embraces Christy and Ally individually.
Ally: So, you want to try the movie thing again?
Julianna: Yeah… sure…
Julianna delivers a small smile through her tears as she walks back inside the house with her two new friends. Of course, in WCG, Julianna’s going to keep at it alone, but deep down, though she refuses to publicly admit it, the West Coast Champion knows how deep and powerful friendship really is. Now that she’s broken away from her parents, the San Diego native is definitely going to start taking charge of her life and career going forward.
