$$$$$ ON CAMERA $$$$$
October 12th, 2017 9:45 PM
c2Con Floor, Moscone Center, san Francisco, CA
Mason Moore looks out the floor of the Moscone Center as wrestling fans go from booth to booth, getting merchandise and autographs and pictures. He smiles as he sees one fan buy a replica of both the old Genesis title and the new Spotlight title. His autograph session had come and gone, but the convention held some fun as did the city. For now though, he turned and walked away from the large crowd, ducking in to a hallway where a camera and the Spotlight title waited for him. He was dressed fairly simple, rocking both his own MOORE POWER locomotive shirt and a pair of NGW athletic pants. He grabbed the title and slung it over his shoulder as he started recording.
"Ladies and Gentleman, welcome once again to the moment you have all been waiting for... Mason Moore's locker room talk. Alright so I'm not actually in a locker room and that phrase has taken on some negative connotations, but there wasn't anything good that was alliterative or went with me being the most impressive physical specimen that wrestling has ever seen, so we're gonna keep that name."
Mason gives the camera a slight shrug, then nods his head yes to get the audience to go along with him.
"Today, we are going to talk about what it takes to be a champion. We've all seen that becoming a champion can sometimes be quite a difficult task. I say sometimes, because other times you can get a quick roll up, surprise your opponent with a three and suddenly you're a champion. Other times you can pull the tights or hit your opponent with an illegal weapon behind the back of the ref. Other times, you can sneak a win in a fatal four way match to 'earn' a title shot, then get low blowed by a bat crap crazy opponent and get handed what was a vacant title. I think I know someone in this very company that did that exact same thing. He's some times hard to see, but I know that champ is here."
Mason looks at the camera and winks and he gives a slight chuckle, as everyone knows exactly who he's talking about.
"Still, the common phrase is that it is easier to win a championship, than it is to keep a championship. If you look at past reigns just since Redemption Wrestling, There have been twenty two total title reigns between the Heavyweight, New Gen, Genesis, Young Lions, and tag. Of those twenty two reigns, six of them lasted more than one hundred days. Fourteen of them saw at least one successful title defense, and eleven of those fourteen saw more than one successful defense. That also means that eleven of those title reigns ended with either none or one times where the title was successfully defended. Half of the title reigns ended after a single defense of less. With two titles on the line at Dissension, the odds say that one of the champions is going to lose. That's only if you take Redemption wrestling in to account, and it's really not fair to look at the stats for all titles when talking about MY Spotlight title."
He takes a second to admire the belt, looking at his face in the reflection. Smiling and flexing his other arm.
"Let's just focus on this title, and the ones whose lineages and history are rolled in to this one. You've got the NGW Marquee Championship, the namesake of the current title, the IPW Spotlight championship, and the Redemption Genesis title. Let's go back to the beginning. The NGW Marquee title. Ten Marquee title reigns were recorded, with seven different people holding the belt. This was a heavily contested belt, and it wasn't until the sixth title reign, that someone managed at least one successful defense. Of the seven people to hold this title, only Avery Miles managed to successfully defend it more than once. Not exactly great odds right there."
Mason gives his collar a slight tug and makes a somewhat nervous expression towards the camera.
"Moving on, the namesake of this beauty on my shoulder, the IPW Spotlight championship. Now there was an interesting deal with this title where people could cash it in after so many defenses and get a heavyweight title shot. The number of defenses needed seems like it went up for each person, but I don't know. What I do know is that nine people held the title with a combined twelve reigns. There was a bit more success from champions here. First one made two successful defenses and then traded it away for a title shot. The next three, one successful defense, Then we see none, 4, another cash in, one, none, none, none, five, cashed in then none. Interestingly enough, two of the three people who cashed in for a Heavyweight title shot, did end up winning that title. Still, it's time we move on to a title that's near and dear to my heart."
Mason steps away fro a few seconds and brings in a replica of the Genesis title.
"As you all saw, I have the real one mounted in my gym slash office, but they had the replica ones here and you guys know I enjoy a nice prop now and then. So the Genesis title had the fewest reigns at seven, and was only held by five different people. It's six and four if you don't include my reign since the title was transitioned to the Spotlight on the night I won it. Still, despite having the fewest reigns and least amount of champions, it is the one with the most champions to successfully defend it at least 2 or more times. Matter of fact, every person who held the title, managed to successfully defend it at least two times. Still, I can't help but look at all of the numbers. They really do tell a story when you do your research and look at the history of all three of the titles that came before this one."
He stops and looks at the Spotlight title one more time, again flexing and showing off a bit as his vanity comes through. He stops and turns back to the camera with a smile on his face.
"A mindless brute doesn't do research like this. A moron doesn't know that there were twenty eight reigns between the Marquee, the IPW spotlight, and the Genesis champion. Of those twenty eight reigns, only eight of them saw more than one successful defense. Fourteen times, this title was lost before the person holding it managed even a single defense. So right now, I stand in the same place as six previous champions. I go in having recorded my first defense, knocking back the challenge of the previous champion, and moving on to what I hope will be a record breaking reign with this title. I need six successful title defenses and one hundred and six days as champion to break both of those records. The odds really aren't in my favor on that though. A little over twenty percent of the champions had more than one successful defense when holding any iteration of the title. Part of that is how often this championship is defended. Show in and show out, this title gets put on the line. That is why i wanted the Genesis championship. That is why I set my sights on it from the very start. Other titles may have a bit more prestige, but this is the title you want if you want to prove that you deserve to be a champion. I fully intend to do that one Sunday night. I intend to do what has only been done six of twenty eight times before, and record my second successful title defense. That is where we come to my opponent for Dissension."
Mason takes the title and wraps it around his waist as he looks straight ahead.
"Believe me John Blade, I didn't forget about you. I wasn't going to sit here and just talk about the history of the title. Nope. This match between me and you, it's about starting my own path towards the history books. Before I can record defense number six and seven and eight and twenty two, I have to record defense number two. I would by lying if I said that my confidence wasn't extremely high. It's always high, but it's really up there for this match. You have a history of failure John, and you are a former champion who never recorded a single defense. Sure it was with the New Generation title, but it still shows how you perform with the title on the line. You didn't even win that title by pin fall or submission either. Then we add in the fact that I have already beaten you once before. Not only did I beat you, I beat you with relative ease. I'm not saying it was a walk in the park, but compared to one of my regular workouts, it wasn't difficult. You've got heart though. You do not give up, even when everyone is telling you to. You continue to fight and fight and just plug away at it. Even in the face of daunting odds and a history of failure, you come back every single show. Who knows, maybe you'll be one of those guys who wins a title with a quick surprise pin. Of course should that happen, I'll be taking it right back in my rematch and proving that you aren't capable of staying a champion, but I honestly don't see that happening. Most likely scenario, I plant my foot square in that stupid face, hit Moore Power, secure the one, two, three, and then move on to the next challenger. I know the Vegas odds are definitely in my favor."
Mason smiles and winks as he takes the title from his waist and raises it high in the air.
"I want everyone watching, to get really used to this image. I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure that you see it a lot."
Mason keeps the title raised high as he rips his shirt in half with one hand, showing off his physique a bit as the scene slowly fades.
