It's Thursday morning of the Squared Circle Con and that means Day 1 of West Coast Genesis stars, including the South Bay Champion Ruby Lance who is currently seated on the floor between the couch and coffee table of the suite that she and Scotty Latimer booked for the week of the Con in San Francisco. Speaking of the American Maharaja, Scotty enters the scene and takes a seat next to her on the floor, leaning back against the couch as he looks over at her playing on her phone.
"What are you doing, babe?"
Ruby doesn't look up from her phone, but takes a very deep breath.
"Trying to figure out the best time to throw our Halloween party. Our schedules are hectic enough and I don't even know when our friends are going to be free."
She shakes her head and swipes her phone a couple of times.
"I mean, I thought I put your upcoming shows in my calendar, but I'm not seeing them."
With a frown, she looks over at him. Maybe it's the early hours of the morning, but she looks exhausted. Despite this, she gives him a smile.
"Honey we can worry about that next week. Don't get frustrated we will figure all that out together ok? Right now you have a huge crowd of people that want to meet you. Baby I hear there is a line stretched two blocks down waiting for you."
He smiles at her as holds her tightly. She smiles a little brighter and leans into him.
"You exaggerate so much. Have I ever told you how cute that is?"
She laughs a little, but it's obvious her mood hasn't completely turned around yet. There's still something weighing on her mind.
"I don't know if…"
Trailing off, she sighs and shakes her head before laying it against his chest and closing her eyes.
"Nevermind. We should get going."
She tries getting up but Scotty gently pulls her back down to sit.
"You know you can tell me what's on your mind honey. So what's going on?"
He holds her tightly relaxing as he smiles waiting to hear her tell him. She takes a deep breath, letting it out in a sigh.
"I just don't know if I want friends anymore."
Realizing how terrible that sounds - even worse out loud than it did in her head - she immediately winces and shakes her head at herself.
"I don't mean… ugh. I just mean that I'm getting burnt out on fighting my friends. Now I have to fight Donovan? I mean, we're not friends but we are. I guess we are friends. It's complicated and weird."
She gives an exhausted sigh and leans back against the couch.
"I guess I just don't feel like… part of the group?"
That's partly a question, but certainly not one that Scotty can answer. In fact, it's not even really a question. It's entirely confusion and since this is Ruby's story it's not like Scotty can clear it up.
"Austen said to me a little bit ago that I seem distance from all of them and I think he's right. It's not because of you and us and this all being new and… I feel like no matter what it's always going to be me vs. them. Ever since I won the South Bay title. That's what it feels like. That's what it's been. And I'm not sure if I like it."
She frowns but attempts to turn it into a smile in her effort to not let any tears well up even though they are dangerously close to doing just that. He could see that she was about to cry so he hugs her tightly.
"Honey that's just the nature of pro wrestling. You just have to realize that you are a champion...your friends are wrestlers that want to achieve what you have achieved. There's nothing personal against you. You are a great friend to them and you are the main reason that they have a group to begin with."
Scotty didn't like her feeling that way and he was a little irritated that Austen was trying to get her upset for no reason. He didn't understand why they thought she was being distant. She was still a great friend to them all. He now felt a little responsible for all of this yet he keeps holding her as he could feel a tear from her fall onto his arm.
"This just isn't how I expected things to go when I got out here. I didn't think I'd be fighting people that I care about. Or that they'd want to fight me. I'm just tired of disappointing everyone."
He looks does at her laying against him.
"Ruby….honey...look at me so I know you are listening."
Keeping her face buried in his chest, she wraps her arms around his waist to hold him tighter and refuses to do as he asks her.
"I already know what you're going to say, but… I feel like all I do is disappoint everyone. Austen and Danni… they both want to be South Bay Champion and they're not because I am. Because they lost to me. Danni didn't even really lose either time, she just didn't win. I guess last time I didn't really either but one of us left with a title."
She takes a deep breath and lets out it slowly into him.
"I'm not proud of my last two defenses. Not by a long shot. I can't imagine how anyone is. I have Julianna talking crap about me and… and it's just okay? It's like it's just okay and I want to do something about it, but I can't. It's out of my hands. I feel like… a disappointment."
"Ruby….you aren't a disappointment. You've worked your ass off to be where you are at today and right now it's your time. If they can't respect that you might have worked a little harder than they have or if a promoter sees a little more in you than them then so be it. Jealousy isn't a good trait in a friend."
He looks at her as it killed him seeing her so upset. It was the first time she had been like this in a good while.
"It's not them. They're not like that to me. It's just… I don't like being between my friends and their goals. I didn't think it would be like this. I didn't think I would… be…"
She sighs into his chest and her arms tightened around him a little tighter.
"...fighting you."
Her last two words are much quieter, almost a mumbled whisper as she confesses the real stress weighing on her mind doesn't even have anything to do with the South Bay Championship but an upcoming booking in Seattle Pro Wrestling. After the confession, she falls quiet and keeps her face hidden. Scotty smiles at her as he touches her chin. She looks at him.
"It's a good thing then that afterwards I'll find you...tell you how great you are...then kiss you like this."
He kisses her softly
"Then we leave in love like we were in love before the match. Baby...this stuff happens. It's professional wrestling. We all know we have goals in this business and sometimes they are the same goals as your friends have. Don't feel guilty that you met one before the others did. And don't worry about our upcoming match."
He looks at her as she smiles slightly. He touches her cheek as he wipes a tear from under her eye gently.
"I love you."
She leans in and presses her lips against his, standing at the same time and keeping the kiss for long as she possibly can. She takes a hold of his hands and pretends to heave him up to his feet, but he really does nearly all of the work. She wraps her arms around his waist again and rises up on her toes to give him another kiss.
"Now we really have to go."
Scotty smiles at her as he kissed her softly again.
"I love you too...time to go and greet all those who realize how amazing you are like I do."
"All five of them."
She giggles as Scotty gives her a disapproving look because cracking a smile and shaking his head at her modesty.
