”Here we are again, huh?”
That would be the voice of Jack Santore, the former MMA champion and former high school QB. The scene fades in as Jack is shown on screen in his truck. He’s got the engine on but it appears he’s already pulled into his apartment complex in Los Angeles. He shakes his head at whatever it is that seems to be annoying him at the moment.
”Another match and I’m put in against another person that I actually admire and respect.”
Jack shakes his head with a grin on his face, although deep down it’s a situation he’s not that happy about.
”It happened first against Ruby and then I was in the ring with Tasmin and Izzy, then Donovan after that, followed by Austen. Now I get to get into the ring against Danni, a person I’ve hung out with on a few occasions with our group of friends. Her and Donovan have always both been nothing but friendly and welcoming to me. But I have to get in there as if she hasn’t ever been nice to me. I have to forget all of that and see her as just another person that stands in my way. She’s standing in my way of claiming the South Bay title or the West Coast title. Hell, many people see Danni as the champion-in-waiting.”
He shrugs his shoulders. There’s no denying the talent of Danni LeBlanc in his mind.
”But I’m going to forget about that just the way that she’s going to. I expect nothing less from such a bad-ass competitor. Just as I expected nothing less from Ruby or Austen. But the difference here is that I’m sick and tired of coming close and having to just be happy for my opponents. It’s not fun and it comes to an end this Saturday. I won’t have Austen there or Trixie or Honey. Just like Danni won’t have Donovan or Ruby there. It’ll just be the two of us, beating the holy hell out of one another to get closer to become a champion.”
Jack’s demeanor gets even more serious than it was. He looks down to the floor of his truck momentarily before returning his gaze to the camera.
”This is all I have. Not the truck or the apartment, but wrestling. It’s not to gain sympathy but to state the truth. Danni has her dream home and her dream man, she has her pet and a life that she probably considers ideal. I don’t have any of those things. I have wrestling and I have some good friends. I’m working my way there slowly. But I’m hungry for competition and to hold gold in WCG, hold gold in NGW. I don’t work my ass off in the performance center and think about getting back home to spend time with someone. I don’t think of somebody waiting for me at home. No, for me it’s the complete and total opposite. I sit at home and think about the performance center, I think of my next match. I think about how it is that I can improve this week. I’m always trying to get better. My life is not complete, where I’m just happy to be here because I have someone waiting for me. No…”
His eyes have fire in them now. He’s perked up and intense.
”...this is it. I think about wrestling, that’s my addiction. I love sneakers. I love collecting them and finding the freshest pair for my matches. But it still doesn’t hold a candle to wrestling. I have a thirst for learning as much as I can about it and applying it to my matches. Honestly…”
Jack sighs heavily. The intensity is still there but it’s broken momentarily by something.
”...helping Danni, Ruby and Austen against The Messiahs last month was probably the most satifsying thing I’ve done since I’ve come to WCG. I stood up to a group of bullies and it felt good. It felt good to be there for three people I do consider friends and then I got to beat them with my Fresh Kicks buddy, Austen. But at the end of the day, it would be incredibly sad and pathetic if that were the end of the big moments for me here in this company. I won’t allow it to happen this time. No more losses in big moments. No more.”
Jack vehemently shakes his head. He has no intention of losing with such an opportunity on the line.
”Let’s face facts here, I’m the underdog in this match. There’s no sense trying to deny it or hide it. It’s true. I mean, if I were a betting man I’d be putting my money on Danni right now.”
Jack shakes his head and laughs. He can’t believe that he’s saying these things and maybe agreeing with the statue quo?
”All that’s done is piss me off. I mean, who wants to be the underdog? Not only that, but who wants to absolutely know that they’re the underdog? But the difference is that it’s going to fuel me. I knew I was the underdog in so many big games in high school, in many MMA fights. But back then it just made me mad and made me wanna work harder so that I could come out on top and prove to the world, prove to myself that I did it. All of those vegas spreads and predictions don’t mean anything. Because at the end of the day, they can’t measure a person’s will and want.”
There’s that fire in Jack’s eyes again.
”So go ahead, put your money on the clear-cut favorite. Put your money on the champion-in-waiting. Don’t give me a chance at all. Don’t believe in me. Don’t see me as a threat or a champion at all. See me as a pushover and as a doormat for his friends. I’ll be happy that a lot of people lose a ton of money on Saturday. It’s no problem.”
Jack stares intensely into the camera before it fades to black. Jack’s intensity the last thing seen.
