Camera opens on Gabriel leaning, arms folded, against one of the rings inside his gym. Head down in contemplation he doesn’t notice or move for the camera. After a few moments of not moving you can hear a voice off camera.
“Hey, Mr. Griffin?”
Gabe looks up a look of mild confusion on his face. “Hey, I wasn’t expecting you for another hour or so.” Gabe moves his hand as if to say no Matter. “Either way its good you’re here, I was just thinking through what I would say for Unscripted. You know scripting for Unscripted.” Gabe chuckles at his own joke.
“No this is fine then. I have quite a bit to say about Rudy and our upcoming match.”
“You mean Ruby?” the cameraman corrects
Gabe pauses and looks over at the cameraman. “I didn’t quite catch that?”
“I said that her name is Ruby not Rudy. Close but I don’t want you to get it wrong for the promo.”
Gabe gives a sigh as he shakes his head. “I don’t think you understand that I didn’t get it wrong. You must be a fan though. I can see the twinkle in your eye, the hopeful exuberance that emanates from her fans that they too may reach greatness. Sorry to disappoint you but I didn’t get it wrong. Rudy is who I’m talking about.
Let me break this down for you so you can understand why Rudy is a more appropriate name then Ruby. Do you remember the movie from oh so long ago starring that hobbit named Same Gamgees? You know the one about a real guy who didn’t really have a place on the football team.”
“Didn’t have a place? I think you’re thinking of the wrong movie.”
“Look it would behoove you to shut that trap and just keep filming. You’re in no position to tell me what I do or do not understand when it’s my metaphor. Let’s take a look, here we have a young kid who wants to play football for Notre Dame so bad. He wants it he can taste it. He enrolls must take special classes only to qualify but he gets in. He walks onto the football team. He makes it on heart and desire. He challenges everyone on heart. People really, really like him. He never plays a game for his entire career. Until the last day. His entire team offer to sit so he can play. His entire career was made possible only because everyone else was willing to give up their spot so HE could play. Think about that.”
Gabe pauses and tilts his head as he looks past the camera to the now silent camera man.
“Now let’s look at our own Rudy, I mean Ruby, but really what’s the difference. Ruby wanted to be a wrestler so bad she could taste it. She has heart and grit and she puts in extra hours validating herself that she belongs in the ring. She was given a title because her friends decided to either bail on the match for personal reasons or injure themselves because the really, really liked her as a friend." Gabe begins to imitate a whiney voice. “But Gabe what about the title defenses she’s had. She won those alone.” He stops the imitation. “Look I know that’s what you’re thinking. Doesn’t matter. Why? Because all she has faced is her friends. She really hasn’t had a legitimate defense until this week at unscripted. “
Gabe pauses a moment “Nothing from the peanut gallery, good. This week at unscripted I get my first shot at the South Bay Champion. Someone who number one fan behind the camera can confirm is not a friend of Ruby. Someone who does not think she has paid all her dues and someone who will not let up just because she is a sweet, caring, pretty, young woman. She wants to step in the ring, then she gets treated like everyone who steps in the ring.
I’ve been doing this a lot longer and I know what it takes to maintain a title reign. She has bare scratched the surface.”
“But you didn’t earn your title shot Mr. Griffin you got no…”
“I have every right. I earned this title shot by the years of blood sweat and tears I put into my career, I earned my title shot by the years of training those to come after me. I negotiated with management an opportunity, it wasn’t given to me I took it. I earned it with not just my own skills but because I took it. I will give you this Mister number one Fan, I won’t take Ruby for granted. She has a modicum of talent and she has an opportunity to learn and grow and get better this week. But understand it will not be a walk in the park that she is used to.
I hope I have made it clear why Rudy is an appropriate name for our little miss champion. She all the same characteristics the were demonstrated by the character. A lot of Heart, a whole lot of friends and fans, you including. A lot of desire and a flashy smile. Let’s just hope her substance comes out at unscripted or it may be a short match. No go away and tell WCG to send an impartial less lippy cameraman next time. I would prefer to use my time cutting a promo and not explaining myself to my opponent’s fans.’
Gabe turns and walks away from the camera as the cameraman starts to move seeing the promo done.
Gabe stops and turns tossing something at the Cameraman. “Here read my book maybe you will learn something.”
