Waiting in the Wings
Jazmyn Rain: “I’ll be one of the first to admit that patience isn’t exactly something I am good at. Call it being overeager, call it having an abundance of passion but I’ve always been one of those people that wants to accomplish everything on her bucket list as soon as possible. Of course, throughout my career, I’ve had to endure quite a few long stretches of time before things happen. It took me a little over a year to finally be wrestling matches on a regular basis and even then, I spent the first six months of my career as a tag team wrestler before I branched out into the singles ranks and started to make waves there. When I fell off the wagon and hit the rock bottom of my life, it took me two years to get back in the business and I not only had to deal with time, I had to deal with rejection from wrestling company after wrestling company because I was considered “too much of a risk” to be active again. But, eventually, I got there. It also took me quite a while, in both time and repeated failure, to win my first and to date, only world championship and ever since it was torn away from me, the wait to win it back has been eighteen months and counting.
These long stretches are great in the sense that it helps me appreciate the journey more, but I just can’t help it. I have a huge passion for what I do and I don’t think that’s ever going to change. Last Glory, I defeated former New Generation Champion Caroline O’Hara Burchill and I’m already chomping at the bit wanting to get a shot at the championship myself and yet, I’m waiting in the wings having to watch her and three others compete for that title in that four way. Understandably, Caroline is getting her shot. But I can’t help but feel that I could have also received the opportunity Trixie and Jack Tillman got to get into that four way. But again, all in due time. For now, I’m going to take what I can get and Convergence will be a night where I will definitely showcase something. Though, I’d be lying to everyone if I said that I wasn’t initially frustrated with the way things shook out for Convergence at first…”
Date: August 24, 2017
A few nights after her huge win against former New Generation Champion Caroline O’Hara Burchill, Jazmyn Rain finds herself in a gym taking up a boxing session. Sporting a ponytail along with a sleeveless neon green top and a matching pair of sweatpants, the Charlotte native is firing away some punches as her trainer defends against them. She’s typically into it, but for reasons unknown even to her, her intensity is higher than usual. Punch after punch lands right on the money, but she doesn’t notice that her trainer is slightly wincing with every punch. Of course, she’s about to know how intense she’s really taking things.
Trainer: Jazmyn, can I ask you something?
Jazmyn: What?
Jazmyn tries to stay focused, firing off a few more punches.
Trainer: Did Derek cheat on you?
This random question causes Jazmyn to stop punching for a few seconds, raising her eyebrows in surprise.
Jazmyn: Excuse me?
Trainer: Your punches are landing at a pretty high velocity today, more than usual. I thought maybe it was because you were angry about something.
Jazmyn: No, I’m fine and Derek would never do that to me.
Jazmyn continues to fire off some punches, working out some fire within her.
Trainer: Ouch…
Jazmyn: Are you saying…
She fires off a few more punches…
Jazmyn: ...that I don’t hit like a girl???
Voice: Not now you’re not…
Jazmyn is surprised, but stays focused even though it’s Derek, her boyfriend, that just walked up behind her.
Jazmyn: Derek, I don’t need to be distracted right now.
Derek: I’m not trying to distract you…
Derek raises his eyebrows noting the intensity of which Jazmyn is firing off her punches.
Derek: But I do think that you have some kind of repressed frustration in there somewhere that you need to work out…
Jazmyn: No Derek, not in the mood for that right now.
Derek: ...not THAT kind of “repressed frustration”...
Jazmyn: I’m FINE…
Trainer: Ow… ow… Jaz, you need to dial it back…
Jazmyn: Really… I am!
Right after she says this, Jazmyn has a lapse where she loses control and she completely misses her trainer’s hands, accidentally landing one square in the jaw that knocks him down to the padded mat below. Her eyes widen in shock and she immediately becomes concerned.
Jazmyn: Oh my god! I’m so sorry…
Jazmyn quickly kneels down beside her trainer as he begins to sit up holding his jaw.
Jazmyn: Are you okay?
Trainer: Yeah… I’m fine…
Derek walks over to help Jazmyn get the trainer back to a vertical base.
Trainer: Excuse me while I get some ice… and cut this session off a little early…
Holding his jaw, the trainer leaves the scene and Jazmyn alone with Derek. Jazmyn winces in guilt, obviously not intending to do what she just did.
Derek: So… about that repressed frustration…
Jazmyn: Derek, I already told you. I’m fine.
Jazmyn sighs in annoyance, which Derek picks up on easily. Derek lifts up her hands and unties the knots on her boxing gloves before he helps her remove them from her hands.
Derek: Why do you seem so mad?
Derek tosses the gloves aside while Jazmyn folds her arms and expressed a bit of an annoyed pout.
Jazmyn: I’m NOT mad.
Derek: Jazmyn, come on. I know when you’re mad… especially whenever you get mad at me. What’s wrong? Has what happened in Montreal been bothering you after all?
Jazmyn: No, I’m alright. GCW isn’t making me frustrated at the moment.
Derek: So what’s going on?
Jazmyn: You think beating a former New Generation Champion gets you places, right?
Derek: Oh… it’s Redemption…
Jazmyn sighs again in annoyance.
Derek: You want to sit down and talk about it?
Jazmyn: Fine…
Jazmyn and Derek walk toward a bench nearby and they sit down next to each other. Derek grabs Jazmyn’s left hand and plants a gentle kiss on top of it, holding onto her hand to let her know he’s there for her.
Jazmyn: So as you know, I beat Caroline the other day…
Derek: And that was a hell of a performance, if I say so myself.
Jazmyn: Thanks! I thought maybe I’d be in the conversation for the New Generation title and all. I’m not saying add me to the four way or anything like that, but just something, you know? Convergence is coming up and instead, I end up in a match with someone named DeSean Walker and I don’t mean any disrespect to the kid, he seems like a good guy from what I’ve heard of him, but I can’t help but feel annoyed, you know? I go from facing and defeating a former New Generation Champion to facing someone who’s barely fighting his second professional match in his career? I can’t help it if I’m feeling just a tad annoyed.
Derek: Yeah, I can understand why you’re feeling a little frustrated right now.
Jazmyn: Frustrated AND concerned.
Derek: Concerned about what?
Jazmyn: The New Generation division as a whole. The more Jew Blazer opens his mouth, the less of a fan I’m becoming of him. What kind of example is he setting for the kids when he’s going around teaching them that doing what someone else does to you is right… even when the action is wrong? There’s this part of me that feels that he’s not the best thing for the division at the moment.
Derek: And the others?
Jazmyn: I don’t even need to get into Caroline again. At least I beat her on Sunday, so that’s a great sign. But Jack Tillman? The Destroyers… I just don’t want to imagine him with the championship. In all honesty, Jack leaving Convergence with the New Generation title is the worst case scenario for that division because the last thing Redemption needs is the big bads having any more gold around their waists. I’d say Trixie is the best case scenario and she seemed like a good person when we talked to each other and teamed together, but I think she’s got a little too much of an attitude for her own good, especially with that list that she’s written up. So, when you add all that together, and you factor in the fact that I’ve PROVEN I can hang with the best in the division by beating Caroline, I can’t help but feel that I deserve to be in that match too, especially knowing that someone like Tillman is in there.
Jazmyn stops talking, having expressed her concerns. Derek wraps an arm around her as a sign of reassurance. Jazmyn takes a deep sigh, having expressed much of her passion and Derek nods, understanding where she’s coming from.
Derek: I get it. I do. You’re driven and that’s how you’ve always been. But damn, you’re not patient, are you?
Derek laughs, before he continues.
Derek: You’ve only had three matches there. Two of the three, you were thrown to the wolves, but you were able to split them. I wouldn’t worry about a thing. That shot’s going to come to you sooner or later. But you know what the deal is. Focus on what’s in front of you.
Jazmyn: Yeah, and I’m not the greatest at doing that.
Derek: You’re going to have to be this time around though. Otherwise, you’re not only going to lose a match to someone who’s just in his second professional match, you’re going to lose any case you made for a title shot along with it and I KNOW you don’t want to do that. I hate to be blunt with you, but I got to be. Patience, Jazmyn. That’s all it takes. I don’t doubt that you’re going to win at Convergence, but keep focused.
Jazmyn sighs again, but this time, it’s a lighter, softer sigh indicating that she’s in a state of relief. A small smile creeps on her face as she responds to what she just heard.
Jazmyn: Thanks for telling me that. I’m sorry you had to see me so frustrated. I really didn’t know I was taking it out on the trainer so much.
Derek: No worries.
Jazmyn: I’ll do what I have to do. I just hope everything turns out okay with the New Generation division at the end of the day.
Derek: And if it doesn’t, that’s where you jump into that fire and fix it. Either way, it’s all going to turn out for the better, is it not?
Jazmyn: Thanks for giving me that perspective! I’m so glad I have someone like you that’s so supportive.
Derek: I’m glad to be so lucky to have the most beautiful woman on earth!
Jazmyn: Aw!!!
Jazmyn slightly blushes as the two exchange a quick kiss before they both stand up.
Jazmyn: I love you!
Derek: I love you too… future New Gen champion!
They exchange another kiss, before they ultimately leave the gym Jazmyn was training in. Subconsciously frustrated coming into this boxing session, Jazmyn leaves with a fresh perspective and with the ability to avoid taking what’s in front of her for granted. In her mind, now that she’s gained the ability, she doesn’t think she can lose to DeSean Walker at Convergence.
Closing Thoughts (OFF CAMERA)
Jazmyn Rain: “I hope things ultimately turn out for the better in the New Generation division in spite of my worries about how it’s going to unfold. If that title ends up in the wrong hands, that could be dangerous. Even then, I’m going to do whatever it takes to either prevent such a bad fate from occurring or reversing the worst case scenario if it comes to that. So, those in the four way better keep an eye on me. I’m coming, and sooner rather than later, I will get my chance. For now though, DeSean Walker is in front of me and it goes without saying that I can’t afford to lose at Convergence. After all, my hopes and chances of becoming New Generation Champion completely depend on it!”
Jazmyn Rain: “I’ll be one of the first to admit that patience isn’t exactly something I am good at.
