It was the first time that Damon and Aurora had ever stepped foot inside the tower that housed their trainer’s former corporate office, and to think, it had only been a year since Jason had stopped using it for business and started using it as a sort of museum of wrestling memorabilia instead. The otherwise stark white walls were festooned with several of Jason’s accolades, from his multiple Hall of Fame plaques to his Lifetime Achievement award. Hanging amongst the plaques and trophies, on prominent display, were pictures of him and Rebel Ink, taken on every occasion where they won championship gold. In fact, the raven-haired titan had just finished placing the picture depicting their most recent victory. Meanwhile, Aurora and her husband wandered around the room, marveling at their surroundings.
Aurora: So, this was your old office?
Jason gave his student a proud nod as he sighed, hooking his thumb through the belt loop of his jeans.
Jason: Yeah. A lot of important decisions were made behind this desk. Not gonna lie; I kinda miss making some of those assholes on the AWA roster squirm....
Voice: Brings back memories, doesn’t it, Jason?
All three people turned around to the source of the voice, a pale-skinned man roughly the same age as Jason, with arms covered in a mixture of scars and tattoos. Jason looked at him with harsh eyes, hissing through clenched teeth as he spoke the man’s name....
Jason: Goth....
Goth chuckled, turning his attention to Jason’s two heavily-inked charges.
Goth: So, these are the new protégés you’ve been raving about, eh?
Jason: They’re hardly new; I’ve been working with them for about a year.
Jason scowled at Goth, who merely stared him in the eyes and scoffed.
Goth: It figures you would hold out on me. When the AWA was in need of tag teams to revitalize the division, you were hoarding the very team that could have breathed new life into the AWA....
Aurora and Damon looked at each other, a mutual feeling of extreme discomfort at the way this encounter was going.
Aurora: Um...
Damon: Is it just me, or is this getting a little bit awkward?
She scoffed, but kept her voice down.
Aurora: “A little”? I think we’re a little past that stage.
Jason: Nice try, Goth. Maybe I didn’t want you to see them as some sort of cash cow. Ever think of that?
Damon: Point taken. Still, stay on guard. This looks like it could get ugly....
They watched as the two former business partners continued their conversation, however hostile it was becoming.
Goth: As if I needed them to help line my pockets. Jason, you know me better than that....
Aurora: AHEM!
Damon: Guys, we’re right here.
Jason turned to the couple, their faces frozen in bewilderment. Goth looked at them as well, smiling as if amused at the fact that even outside of their former association, he could still get under their mentor’s skin.
Goth: All bickering aside, your mentor speaks quite highly of you; something he rarely does outside of his own family. He definitely sees something in you if he’s seen fit to take you under his wing.
He eyed Aurora hungrily, his almost-black eyes making her stomach churn as he took a step toward her.
Goth: As for you, my dear...
Damon stepped in front of his wife before Goth could get any closer. Chuckling at the young grappler’s possessive stance, he threw his hands up and stepped back.
Damon: That’s close enough, pal....
Goth: Ah, there’s that Los Angeles hood mentality. You remind me of a younger version of someone I know....
He turned toward the door, pausing to place a hand on Jason’s shoulder.
Goth: It almost makes me wonder just which one of you is worse....
The pale, grizzled veteran chuckled darkly as he left the room, leaving Aurora and the others staring after him.
Aurora: Alicia wasn’t kidding... what a creep!
Jason: I’d tell you to take it as a compliment, but....
Aurora shook her head.
Aurora: Forget it. I’ve dealt with bigger creeps than that. So, is this all you wanted to show us?
Jason turned to another picture on the other side. As he walked toward it, Aurora and Damon could see that it was a picture of him and Alicia, holding their own set of tag team championship belts. He pulled it off of the wall, turning to face Rebel Ink with the frame in his hands.
This right here was one of the biggest highlights in my career. We were the first husband and wife team in the AWA to hold the Tag Team Championships, and we went on to break the record for the longest reign in the company’s history. There could stop us. But even then, we knew we couldn’t focus on just being a tag team forever. At some point, we knew that an opportunity would present itself where one of us would decide it was time to move on. For me, it was winning my third world championship.
Aurora: Jason, what are you saying?
Jason stared at the framed image, then put it back on the wall, shaking his head.
Jason: I’m just saying, it never hurts to think about the future. Now come on... let’s get out of here. I don’t know about you, but I’m hungry, and I know a great place not that far from here....
Aurora and Damon nodded their heads as Jason gestured toward the door. He followed them out of the office, turning out the light as they left.
