The summer sun was still blazing, but the raging heat of previous months had died down, with the temperature barely nipping at the heels of 100°. Still, it was warm enough to warrant a dip in the swimming pool, which Aurora was more than happy to do.
Clad in a black bikini, she lay there on a float shaped like a pair of white angel wings, staring into space with a look of pure bliss on her face as she floated along the surface of the pool, dragging her fingers through the water. The sudden noise of a pair of French doors opening and closing snapped her out of her bliss, and she turned to look up into the emerald green eyes of her husband Damon, who crouched beside the side of the pool as he smiled. He was shirtless, which allowed Aurora full view of the colorful sleeves on his arms.
Damon: How’s the water, Harley?
Aurora giggled, playfully flicking a few drops of water in his direction as he sat down, slipping his feet into the water.
Aurora: Well, I’d tell you to find out for yourself, but you beat me to it. So, when do we leave for New York?
Damon: Tuesday. I would’ve planned to leave sooner, but I’ve got a HUGE client coming in on Monday... remember the guy with the massive dragon back piece? He has one final session before it’s finished.
Aurora: Oh. So, are Danni and Donovan going to be joining us for this trip?
Damon: Yeah. Donovan said he has some business to take care of, so I invited him to fly out with us.
Aurora: Good... I guess it’ll be nice to have some new friends to hit the gym with. Think they’d be up to some sparring?
Damon: Have you seen the way Donovan’s built? I think those two LIVE at the gym!
Aurora rolled off of the float and into the water, gliding through the water toward the edge of the pool where Damon was sitting. She draped her arms across his lap, smiling as she looked up at him.
Aurora: Oh, Puddin’... don’t you think you’re exaggerating just a little bit?
Damon: Yeah, I guess you’re right. Still, I wonder what I’d look like if I spent as much time in the gym as Donovan....
Damon stroked his chin, as if contemplating what he would look like, even as Aurora smirked and shook her head.
Aurora: Cut it out. You know you don’t need biceps as big as my head to impress me. If I wanted a guy that was built like a tank, I’d have gone after a guy like that. But I have you, and that’s all I want.
Damon: Well, I guess I can’t argue with that....
Aurora: You better not!
Aurora grabbed the edge of the pool, pushing herself up and out of the water. A thick red towel sat folded on the end of a chaise lounge nearby, which she wrapped around her body. The ringing of the house phone prompted a run from the patio to the kitchen, with Damon right on her heels. As Aurora looked at the caller ID, a nervous look washed over her face. With a shaking hand, she reached for the receiver.
Aurora: Hello?
She sat in a barstool at the counter, her fingers drumming at a feverish pace against the black quartz surface as she stared straight ahead, as if staring at a face that only she could see. Damon merely leaned against the wall, crossing his arms as he looked on in curiosity.
Aurora: Oh you have?
Her nervous expression turned to a look of ever-increasing hope as she listened, the smile on her face growing wider with each passing second.
Aurora: That’s... that’s amazing! So, what’s the next step? Uh-huh... uh-huh... alright.
As the phone conversation continued, Aurora nodded her head. Her fingers ceased their nervous drumming, only to curl into a fist clenched not in anger, but in excitement.
Aurora: This is absolutely amazing! I can’t wait to tell my husband! So... Monday morning, then?
Another pause as Aurora turned to face her husband, smiling so hard that she almost seemed on the verge of tears.
Aurora: Excellent! We’ll see you on Monday, then. Thank you so much! Bye....
She hung up the phone, squealing like a school girl that had just won tickets to a boy band concert. Not that she listened to that kind of music, of course. The shrill, ear-shredding sound made Damon cringe, plugging his ears with his fingers. Aurora frowned at the move, playfully poking him in the ribs.
Damon: So what was that all about?
Aurora took her husband by the hand, gazing into his eyes as she smiled.
Aurora: That was the agency just now... it seems our luck is about to change.
Damon: You mean...?
Aurora nodded her head, her smile almost blinding.
Aurora: They have a birth mother that wants to meet with us on Monday morning!
Damon: Great! My client’s not coming into the shop until 1 in the afternoon, so that’s perfect! How far along is she, or did they say?
Aurora: The agency said she’s six months pregnant. And a HUGE wrestling fan!
Damon: This is almost too perfect!
Damon threw his arms around his wife, lifting her up off of her feet as he spun her around. He set her down, taking a deep breath as he put his hands on her shoulders.
Damon: Now, we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves, right?
Aurora nodded her head.
Aurora: Right. Let’s see how this meeting goes, and if it works out, we’ll go from there.
Aurora looked down at her body, her chest still damp from swimming where the towel didn’t reach. As a drop of water rolled from the end of a strand of hair, she giggled.
Aurora: You know, I suddenly feel like going out and celebrating...
Damon: Then maybe you should get dressed first?
Aurora: Yeah... want to help me pick out an outfit?
Aurora didn’t wait for an answer; she just grabbed Damon by the waistband of his shorts and dragged him toward the bedroom.
Damon: You keep acting like that and we’ll never get ANYTHING done!
Aurora said nothing, only giggling as they disappeared into the hallway.
