WCG West Coast Champion Julianna DiMaria happens to be back at her parents’ wrestling facility in San Diego, clearly ignoring the obvious irony of her presence considering that she hasn’t spoken to her parents at all ever since she told them off for wanting to raise the bar and expectations higher on her. Still, two days after Unscripted, the West Coast Champion finds herself extremely frustrated after going through what she would consider a rather humiliating experience at the hands of Donovan Basch and the Messiahs. She lets out an angry sigh, indicating that she wants to forget Unscripted as soon as possible. After putting away her things, Julianna is about to leave the locker room, but she gets started at the sight of Christy and Ally, two of her peers from her time as a wrestling student.
Christy: Jules?
Ally: What are you doing back here?
Julianna immediately forgets everything she was feeling in the moment to put on her brave face to make it seem like there’s nothing wrong.
Julianna: Last I checked?
Julianna folds her arms, asserting her perceived authority.
Julianna: I can stop by here whenever I want.
Christy: Yeah, we know that but I think it’s rather funny that you stop by on a day when you know your parents aren’t going to be here.
Ally: Everyone here knows about you telling off your parents.
Julianna: Oh…
Julianna rolls her eyes and takes a deep breath, clearly feeling cornered knowing that word got out about what would appear to be a minor falling out.
Julianna: Girls, listen, you can make fun of me for doing that another time, alright?
Christy’s and Ally’s eyes widen slightly in bewilderment.
Julianna: I know that being the daughter of the people that run this place has made me a very unpopular figure… well… at least until I won the West Coast title anyway but I’m sure after what happened at Unscripted two days ago and with this “thing” with my parents I’m right back to being unpopular…
Julianna scoffs during a pause.
Julianna: Not that I actually CARE or anything.
Christy: Suuuure….
Julianna: Whatever! Come at me! Carte blanche! Revel in my misery, why don’t you?
Ally: Look, it’s not a big deal…
Julianna: It IS a big deal when the two people you grew up admiring the most don’t seem to be satisfied with ANYTHING you ever do, okay?
Her peers are taken aback by Julianna suddenly breaking out into a rant.
Julianna: People think I had it so fucking easy here because of who my parents were, but oh god no, I WISH I did sometimes. I don’t know how each of your parents were like, but I can bet the house that they were nothing like mine. Yeah, I wanted to be a wrestler and they bred me for this, but holy crap, no matter how many hurdles I jumped or how high I kept raising that bar, it was NEVER good enough for them. It seems like for my entire life, I’ve been trying to gain their acceptance and approval but for whatever reason, it never seems like I do. Whenever I do wrong, holy crap, do they treat me like a child. Whenever I do right, it’s little more than a pat on the back, a “good job” and a “you can do better”. That’s not love! That’s BULLSHIT and that’s the kind of crap that I’ve had to deal with practically my entire life so before you stand there and you make fun of me for lashing out at my parents, consider the facts of the matter. Got it???
This triggers an awkward pause in the air that puts Christy and Ally in a state of surprise. Understandably, they don’t know how to take this as Julianna slightly trembles with anger as she clenches her fists.
Julianna: You think I had it so easy… everyone here did. No, I had it harder than every single one of you because not once did my parents ever show me compassion. I would have loved to have been like you two: bonding with your parents and being able to have a LOVING relationship with them instead of the BUSINESS one that I do. They were great teachers and great trainers. Great parents? I don’t even know anymore!
Julianna’s eyes start to well up with tears lamenting the fact that despite growing up with her parents, she never exactly had the kind of relationship that she, or any other child for that matter, would have ever wanted with them.
Ally: Actually Jules, we weren’t even thinking about making fun of you. We were actually going to tell you we respect you a heck of a lot more for standing up to your parents like that.
Christy: Especially after what you just told us! You had just barely won the title and they can’t even celebrate? They have to revert right back to their business brains and say they’re going to be tougher on you? Christ!
The tears start falling, but Julianna is quick to wipe them away.
Julianna: I don’t need your sympathy.
Ally: It must be tough going on as you do knowing that you don’t even have any friends.
Julianna: I used to in high school before they decided to ditch me because guess why? Wrestling. It NEVER ends.
Christy: But how can you go on like that? Doesn’t it get lonely?
Julianna: Friends… *scoffs*... friendship is magic! UGH! My peers in WCG make me sick with their stupid little clique. I don’t even know what real friends are. Those girls I just mentioned never really were considering why they ditched me. Even then, my parents never really wanted me to have friends. They always saw them as a distraction from what’s important. I’ve only had one boyfriend in my entire life… and that lasted like a day! Why did he dump me? My parents. Bloody hell!
Ally: Well… we can be your friends.
Julianna: You must be joking…
Christy: Why not? And no, we’re not joking.
Julianna: Okay girls… let me remind you of how things work around here. Have you forgotten, and this goes for everyone in this facility and not just you two, that I HATE you all?
Ally and Christy look at each other and back at Julianna, the former shrugging which causes Julianna to roll her eyes.
Christy: We didn’t get the memo.
Julianna: Still! You two hated me along with Alonzo and Jamal and everyone else and now you both want to be my friends? How does this make any sense? Suddenly, I’m the West Coast Champion and now you want to be my friends? Do you both realize how fishy that sounds? This isn’t something that can just happen overnight! Stick to the script. I hate you both, you both hate me. Got that?
Christy: Well, here’s the thing. We hated you because on the surface, you came across like a self-entitled, spoiled, narcissistic, nepotism-benefiting, shallow harpie.
Julianna: Excuse me?
Ally: But when you won the title… we saw that you were more than that. And you know what, this conversation has only shown us more of who you really are. You may not believe it, but this isn’t really you. A part of it is a product of your parents and how they raised you but you’re not that different from us. Okay, you have a mainstream wrestling contract and you happen to be WCG West Coast Champion, but aside from that, well…
Christy: You’re human, Julianna… just like the rest of us. Maybe what happened to you at Unscripted should serve as a brief reminder of that. Yes, we hated you before, but that’s because we didn’t understand you. We do now and really, it’s sad that you’ve had to go on like this.
Julianna: Thanks for the sentiments, but I don’t need your sympathy.
Ally: But wouldn’t you think having some kind of social life benefit you? What’s the worst we can do to you? It’s not like either of us are going to wind up in WCG anytime soon. You can trust us. You just need to give us a chance. We’re willing to do the same thing in return. Wouldn’t it have been nice to vent to someone after what happened to you two days ago?
Julianna: I…
Julianna sighs, reluctantly deciding to make the confession she’s about to make.
Julianna: Yeah… I guess so. It would have been nice. It’s damn exhausting sometimes when seemingly everyone is against you at once, but I asked for this from day one so it’s not like it bothers me that much anyway.
Julianna pauses and seethes internally a bit, recalling the events of Unscripted in her mind.
Julianna: Clearly Unscripted wasn’t what I had in mind for my first televised appearance as the West Coast Champion…
Christy: We understand more than you give us credit for, Jules.
Ally: Yeah! We’re not going to judge you, hate you, or mock you. That’s not who we are.
Christy: Or the Messiahs… we’re not them either…
Julianna groans at the mere mention of them!
Ally: Oh come on! That was funny.
Julianna: Too soon, girls.
Christy: Oh. Sorry…
Ally: So, what’s it going to be? I’m not saying we have to be friends right away but gosh, wouldn’t it be nice to just give it a chance at least? It’s not like your parents need to know or anything.
Christy: Yeah! You’re an adult. They have no right to have full control of every waking aspect of your life anymore. Let’s all do something! Maybe we can get to know each other better and hey, you won’t need to be so “Grr! Argh” about the very concept of friendship anymore… maybe!
Julianna ponders the offer that is put in front of her by two of her former worst enemies while she was a wrestling student. She seems reluctant, but the more she thinks about it, the more she realizes that maybe something like this could be good for her after all.
Julianna: What do you two have in mind?
Christy and Ally both smile, knowing that Julianna is starting to come around a little bit.
Christy: Nothing complicated!
Ally: Yeah, it’s really simple. We were thinking… oh I don’t know…
Christy: Simple lunch later?
Julianna: Yeah, because that worked out SO WELL with Rachel Redding in the long run.
Ally: Fuck her!
Christy: Not important anymore.
Julianna: Can we just hang out at either one of your houses for a bit and watch a movie or something? I don’t want any of this to be public.
Ally: Hey, that works!
Christy: I’m the one with all the movies, so my house it is.
Julianna: I want you both to understand two things before we go through with this. One, I’m doing this more to stick it to my parents then to be friends with you two… and two… this conversation? Never happened.
Ally and Christy don’t appear to be fazed at all by Julianna’s latest instance of stubbornness.
Christy: Forgetting!
Ally: We’re not worried! You’ll come around.
Christy: Getting your mind off of things for a few hours is exactly what you need.
Julianna: Sure… we’ll see…
Julianna walks out of the locker room and back down the hallway. She tries to avoid locking eyes with anyone. She turns around and sees the other two standing quite far behind her, causing her to raise her eyebrows in confusion. They both wink at her, indicating that they are staying behind her on purpose. Julianna rolls her eyes and actually cracks a bit of a smirk as she begins to leave the building. If she’s looking forward to hanging out with anyone, she’s certainly not showing it, but in any case, the West Coast Champion at the very least has a brief distraction to keep her from being too overwhelmed from the stresses and pressure of being West Coast Champion from her parents and peers alike.
