Celebration
Date: August 18, 2017
Julianna DiMaria has once again arrived at her parents’ wrestling academy but this time, she’s in brighter spirits as she slings the WCG West Coast Championship over her shoulder. Sporting a pair of sunglasses to heighten both her confidence and arrogance, the young, San Diego native makes her way to the front door of the facility. She takes a deep, calm breath as she gets to the door. She takes a glance at the West Coast Championship and has a smirk on her face, understandably feeling that at the moment, she’s on top of the world.
Julianna: I’m not surprised that my parents would even want to throw a celebration for what I managed to at last, accomplish.
Julianna pauses as she continues to have open thoughts about the situation she’s about to walk into. However, her confident smirk gives way to a raise of the eyebrows and a look of confusion.
Julianna: But why in the world would they want to host it here? My peers hate me! They know that me rubbing things in would make them even more pissed off at me.
Julianna pauses once more and sighs.
Julianna: I don’t necessarily have the time to deal with a bunch of jealous nimrods that can’t stand the sight of me, but it is what it is I suppose.
Julianna walks inside and doesn’t say a word to the receptionist who knows that she essentially has free access to stop by whenever she wants. The main concourse is largely empty but Julianna doesn’t mind this so much as she wasn’t intending to be there anyway. Turning toward her right, she decides to take a trip down memory lane as she walks down the hallway.
Julianna: I had no idea that when I would walk down this hallway almost on a daily basis, I’d turn into what I am today.
Julianna scoffs after this, showing her heightened arrogance and in a sense, making a slight mockery of where she was before. She turns to her right and walks into that familiar locker room. The room is pitch black and dark. Julianna shuts the door behind her and turns on the lights, but she gasps in surprise at what she’s seeing.
Julianna: Okay… guys… listen… now’s not the time for this…
Julianna looks somewhat panicked as she finds herself surrounded in every corner by Christy, Ally, Alonzo and Jamal, the four students that despised her and that were used by her mother to teach her a lesson six weeks prior.
Christy: Surprise!
Jamal: You think we wouldn’t forget…
Ally: Mmhmm! Now the stakes are raised… you’re the West Coast Champion now!
Alonzo: That’s right… and with mommy and daddy not around… well…
Christy: We figured we’d surprise you in our own way…
Julianna’s eyes widen, knowing she’s in a four on one situation now.
Julianna: Listen… guys...I’m not here to deal with you right now. I know I’ve wronged you all before, but you know that if you do this, my parents are going to expel all four of you, right?
Jamal: Not true! We have free reign for this! Your parents aren’t going to stop us.
The four approach Julianna with their hands behind their backs, unnerving her a little more.
Ally: I mean… we admire you SO MUCH for setting an EXAMPLE for our school…
Alonzo: Time to show our appreciation….
Julianna panics a little, cringing when she sees they’re all about to pull their fists from behind their backs. She braces herself before she gets hit…
...by a bunch of silly string!
Julianna: Hey!!! What is this?!?!?!
The four of them laugh as they continue to spray her with the silly string.
Julianna: Careful! Don’t get it on the title! Oh my god, you already got it in my hair!
The four of them stop and Julianna doesn’t know whether to laugh or to be angry at the fact that she’s covered in a bunch of silly string.
Christy: Surprise!
Jamal: It’s a celebration!
Julianna: Wait… WHAT? I thought you all hated me! I thought you all wanted to see me fail because of the way I would treat you all in the past.
Ally: Jules, what’s done is done! We don’t hold a grudge anymore. Yeah, you tortured us before and we got bitter but in all honesty, we did that because we thought… well…
Alonzo: We were under the impression you only got to WCG at all because of who your parents were.
Christy: But, when you won the West Coast Championship… in an IMPRESSIVE fashion I should add...you earned our respect… not just the four of us…
Jamal: But everyone here! Bygones are bygones! You represent US… as a mainstream champion!
Julianna: Okay, listen… I’m not all about “representing” okay? I’m glad that there’s no grudge anymore. But, we’re not friends.
Julianna pauses, looking around and seeing that there’s some slight disappointment on the faces of her peers.
Julianna: However… we’re cool! No grudges, right? Good vibes only?
Her peers smile and nod, all while saying stuff like “yeah”, “of course” and “no problem”. Julianna takes a moment to get much of the silly string off of her and she chuckles at this surprise that took place.
Julianna: But… yeah… thanks.
Voice: Alright alright… let’s break this up shall we?
Julianna is started a bit by the voice of her father as he walks in. Her mother isn’t too far behind him
Ally: We’ll talk to you later, Jules! Congrats!
The four students leave the locker room and now the new West Coast Champion is alone with her parents.
Mr. DiMaria: Gosh Jules, words can’t describe how proud we are.
Julianna smiles, knowing that finally, she’s about to receive unconditional appraisal from her parents.
Mrs. DiMaria: I’ve got to give it to you. In Inglewood, you went out there and you fought the best match you’ve ever had in your life. You took everything we taught you and you brought home the title. You did something your father and I couldn’t! At last, someone in our family has become an American mainstream champion!
Mr. DiMaria: Well, I taught her how to be tough, ya know? It was that toughness that brought that son of a bitch down to size and demoralized the shit out of him!
Mrs. DiMaria: Oh please! It was MY submission prowess that won it! She made him tap out!
Mr. DiMaria: Yeah, and? She still had to wear him down!
Mrs. DiMaria: Ryan Keys tapped out! You don’t get that just by pummeling your opponent to death!
Julianna: You GUYS!
Her parents stop their mini-argument, looking back at Julianna who is far from amused.
Julianna: This isn’t about you two! This is about ME! Well… I admit it… you guys taught me everything I know and you both played a role in this from day one. There’s no need to argue about who should get more of the credit because none of this is possible without either of you guys. So… thank you so much for everything you’ve ever given me. I’m so glad I finally managed to put together everything you guys taught me to make this possible.
Julianna’s parents are both caught off guard by surprise from their daughter’s humility and her gratefulness, but they are happy to see it nevertheless.
Mrs. DiMaria: Thank you for making us so proud. You didn’t allow your emotions to get the better of you this time. I expected you to win, but submitting Ryan Keys? WOW!
Mr. DiMaria: Impressive all around! Now comes the hard part!
Julianna: Right… I know… defending the title!
Mrs. DiMaria: And you know that we’re going to make sure that you grow into a respectable, incredible champion! Winning a title? That’s one thing. Defending it? Well… let’s just put it this way, young lady… there’s still a heck of a lot of work that remains to be done.
Julianna groans in disapproval,
Julianna: Seriously?
Mr. DiMaria: What? Did ya think winning a title means you’re gonna get a free pass? No way, Jules! Now that you’ve reached the level we both knew you were capable of, it’s time to take things to the next level as a champion.
Mrs. DiMaria: Mmhmm! We know what to expect of you now, so we’re going to be even harder on you!
Julianna: REALLY?!?!?!? GUYS!!!
Mr. DiMaria: What’s the matter?
Julianna: Is ANYTHING I do EVER good enough for you? GOSH! I thought winning this title was going to make you both FINALLY happy with me! I thought maybe I’d be the perfect daughter but NO… now you want to go harder on me? Now you’re going to expect MORE out of me? For FUCK’S sake! When is it EVER going to be good enough for you people?
Mrs. DiMaria: Honey, it’s not a big deal. When have we ever been easy on you?
Julianna: NEVER!
Mr. DiMaria: And ya thought we’d be even after this? Nah! No way! Ya gotta keep your eye on the ball, Jules. We’re not going to let you just rest on your laurels.
Julianna: I don’t need this lecture! You two can’t even trust me? Really? I KNOW how to be a champion! I BECAME ONE six days ago! What makes defending a title so different from challenging for one? It’s a title match one way or another. I don’t need your lectures and now that I’m the West Coast Champion… I don’t need YOU… EITHER of you! I can handle this myself! Watch me! I’m going to be a dominant champion! WCG is MY world now! You two have given me everything! There’s not much more you can give me now! So do me a favor. Leave me alone! This title means I don’t have to live up to your obnoxious standards that are NEVER going to be met no matter what I do!
After her angry, passionate rant, Julianna walks out of the room and slams the door completely shut doing everything she can to not let the title fall on the floor on her way out. Julianna’s mother puts her hand on her face and sighs.
Mrs. DiMaria: She might be a champion in name and possession, but she still needs to mature like one. What are we going to do with her now?
Mr. DiMaria: She’s right you know…
Mrs. DiMaria: About what?
Mr. DiMaria: There’s really not that much more we can do with her. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t be there for her. I wouldn’t worry about it. Once she realizes how tough bein’ a champ is… she’ll come runnin’ right back to us.
Her mother smiles, knowing how true this is.
Mrs. DiMaria: She’ll learn… and I think she’ll learn really quickly how tough it can be to go from the hunter, to the hunted! Let’s let her experience trial by fire!
Mr. DiMaria: I concur with that!
Both of her parents leave the locker room, unfazed by Julianna’s outburst toward them. They know what Julianna doesn’t know at this point: that defending a championship is a LOT different than challenging for one.
Julianna DiMaria has no idea what type of journey she’s about to embark on as the WCG West Coast Champion. With the entire world gunning for her, there’s that question hovering over her head regarding how well she’ll be able to handle herself like a champion.
